Guest guest
Hi, is anyone here in to taking Iodoral or iodine? I belong to another thyroid group that I really don't care for and they are telling every one that they just have to be on Iodoral. I took it for 2 yrs. Before my thyroid storms started and it didn't not shrink my tumor at all. I wish it would have. They say you need iodine even if you have no thyroid. What do you guys think of this. Thanks, Bernetta

Thanks, Bernetta > Two schools of thought here..if you are hypo and the cause is iodine deffiency then iodine works great..if you are hypo because of antibodies then iodine supplementation could be your worst enemy. The two years you took it before storm to be honest could of caused the storm or led up to it. The thyroid uses iodine to produce thyroid hormones..consider it fuel for the thyroid.. now iodine deffiency is real..especially in third world countries and does have serious side effects.. with out enough iodine you will be hypo.. Unfortunately unless you live in a third world country chances are you already have too much iodine in your diet..it is added to all types of dough conditioners, bakery items, cereals, grains etc. not to mention the natural iodine you get form food or the infamous table salt...you need about a 1/2 tsp a day of table salt to get your daily iodine intake.. Now with thyroid antibodies, adding more fuel causes more antibodies, and for those with Hashimoto's wanting to rest the thyroid to stop the swing adding fuel( iodine) to the fire for obvious reasons is more like adding more wood to a fire to try and put it out. Personally I would not add iodine with out a lab test to determine my iodine levels. For myself I am subclinical hyper and when I first starting searching for info I ran into the samething..avoid iodine/ add iodine..and probabley know which board you are talking about that tells everyone to add iodine and Armour..they even insisted me being hyper was because I needed Armour. For me being sensitive to a lot of things I decided to avoid iodine for two weeks and see how it made me feel..I felt a little bit better but really did not notice it..then I went to an Italian bakery with some friends..well the sandwich I had made up for the iodine I missed the last two weeks..I had 3 people who did not even know me tell me I had Grave's..it was not a pretty site..my pulse went crazy, my eyes bulged, my neck was swollen.. that answered the iodine question for me.. and to be honest out of all the things I have tried the onyl thing that has helped me the last two years has been to limit my iodine as close to the RDA as possible but I can always tell when I go over..my body lets me know..but I never noticed until I actually cut it all out for two weeks.. Guest guest
Kats, thank you so much for this info. I believe you are right about the Iodoral making me worse. Because I really got worse fast after I started on it. But the doc said keep taking it, it has nothing to do with the Iodoral.
