Triple negatives and BRCA gene

I was just curious as there seems to be several other ladies in this

group besides myself who are triple negatives. Have any of you been

tested for the BRCA genes and what were your results? I was tested and

have the BRCA1 mutation. I was just wondering if there was a

coorelation between the two.

Yes, I am triple-negative and got my test results back last week. I'm

also BRCA1.

My surgeon believes there is an association between the two. I haven't

checked to see what the literature says. It might be along the lines of

most BRCA1s are triple neg, but not all triple-negs are BRCA1 (or 2). I

say that because I seem to recall only about 10% of BCs are supposed to

be genetic in origin, but I think triple negs might be 20% - but don't

quote me! That's my memory, and I might be flunking the memory test!

I, too am triple neg... not sure if there is a correlation .. I'm sitting here

trying to read the report again.. it basically says BRCA 1 may confer as much as

an 87% risk of breast cancer and a 44% risk of ovarian by the age of 70 in

women. Mutations in BRCA 1 have been reported to confer a 20% risk of a second

breast cancer within five years of the first as well as a ten-fold increase in

the subsequent ovarian cancer...

My report was done by Myriad Genetic Labratories...

I haven't found references to what proportion of BC are triple-neg, but

I saw a paper that said about 80% of their BRCA1s were triple-neg. That

was not true of BRCA2s.

I also have an email from a colleague of one of my friends in

statistical genetics. The BRCA1 mutation identification is more

important for predicting your risk of getting BC or ovarian cancer.

Onece you have it, your best indicator of survival, etc., is the triple-

neg and how aggressive the tumor is and the usual lymph node

involvement. The BRCA1 gene mutation is, unfortunately, associated with

the more aggressive tumor types.

Hope this helps. And I'm not going to be as active on-list in the next

few weeks as I try to get all the stuff I need to get done while I

still have full use of my arms, plus three pre-op appts in 3 days next

week, and then surgery next Thurs. Oh, and the dinner with my friends

who are going to be supporting me during and after my surgery.

I wouldn't think that age has anything to do with it, if your doctor does what

is best for you, you could still live a healthy 30 years or more!!! I don't

like when doctors put an age on an illness and feel that you don't need to worry

about it.. Do your homework, research, get even a 2nd opinion perhaps, but ask

for what you feel is right to help you live the longest you can!!!

Thank you for that link.. since I am a dana farber patient as well as a triple

neg.. I see the oncologist on Monday and will be asking for a more specific

translation!! I'm sure she'll be pleased with all my questions due to this

group!! LOL.. Thats what they get paid for right?!
