Guest guest
Sue, What I was hoping would happen is Palma would read the information on the website & discover for herself that she should be taking Folic Acid, Vitamin B complex, vitamin E & a low dose vitamin C & don't drink TEA as tea inhibits iron absorbtion. I will still stand on the belief that very few people with low iron need to take iron, they need to give the body the TOOLS to keep & use the iron they have. Now if your sitting around eating all sorts of junk food & prepackaged foods MAYBE you need some REAL iron..... I did a new search on low ferritin levels & still didn't see anything saying ferritin should be at 50. Palmas other iron levels are pretty good. I did read some stuff on stop the thyroid madness they say iron levels should be higher if you have thyroid problems. Guest guest
See, I really do not understand this whole iron thing? Maybe because I am not hypo.. I figured the need from iron was from the heavier menstrual cycles caused by being hypo? I did have low iron once..this was after spending a few months of being misdiagnosed as either having female issues( its PMS get use to it) or being told I have the flu etc.. It turned out by the time they got me on the operating table my appendix was a little larger then a softball and although I was on the table it ruptured before surgery started. Now this was a serious acute illness..so maybe it differs in chronic illnesses? My iron count was actually really low..they gave me a few shots in the hospital..this was a while ago..but I think it was between 1 and 2? I went on iron supplements but the way it was explained to me by both the ER doc and my GP was that the red blood cells run on a 90 day cycle so I would have to take iron for 90 days.. I had my iron tested weekly and then at 90 days stopped the iron..tested weekly twice and then had it tested a few times after just to make sure it was good. This is the only time I have needed iron supplements, but most people I know who have needed them have all run the same 90 day course and it is usually after an acute illness, blood loss, stomach ulcers etc. When your iron is low it effects the maturity of the red blood cells and also how well the red blood cells carry oxygen..low iron can effect a person in a lot of ways but I think the main thing with low iron beyond supplementing for 90 days is to find out why?? and deal with the why...I know one of my sister's was also low iron..she ended up having a hysterectomy because she was on her cycle more days then she was ever off of it(this is how most of my family reaches menopause)..she was on iron longer than 90 days but only needed it 90 days after the hysterectomy. Guest guest
My last ferritin was 146. That website you mention is not a medical one. It's privately owned and operated and the viewpoints presented are very one sided. I did a new search on low ferritin levels & still didn't see anything saying ferritin should be at 50. Palmas other iron levels are pretty good. I did read some stuff on stop the thyroid madness they say iron levels should be higher if you have thyroid problems. Guest guest
Cindy-- haven't had time to read the article yet as i'm so busy with work and then trying to keep up with all these emails. but i truly appreciate all the information i get from everyone. it makes for a more informed decision making process. i'm still pretty confused because of so much information that seems to be conflicting but i guess i just need to pick the one that makes the most sense to me and go with it and then adjust accordingly....Cindy wrote: Sue, What I was hoping would happen is Palma would read the information on the website & discover for herself that she should be taking Folic Acid, Vitamin B complex, vitamin E & a low dose vitamin C & don't drink TEA as tea inhibits iron absorbtion. Guest guest
Cindy Sue, I understand your posts. I understand you mean well. HOWEVER — before ANYONE SHOULD take ANYTHING — they absolutely positively NEED TO KNOW what its affects are, it’s side affects and how it may and CAN INTERACT with other supplements and MEDICIATIONS and CONDITIONS. I do extensive research before taking a single supplement — I need to know how it will affect my current conditions or interact or with any medications and/or other supplements I take, foods I eat, etc. It’s never easy to just tell someone “YOU NEED TO TAKE THIS or THAT.” That’s my main point. We can all tell you are passionate about iron, and that Topper is passionate about anti-soy, others pro-soy, etc. It’s wonderful we can call share and hash it out but ULTIMATELY NONE OF US SHOULD PUT ANYTHING IN OUR BODIES without knowing how it may affect US personally. or at least checking in to it. Guest guest
Sue, I completely agree we should not put anything in our bodies we don't know about. Have you ever researched what's in the food we eat? The whole point of my post was to inspire people with iron issues to "DO THE RESEARCH" it only take s a few hours to read up on stuff & if it means a better life then we all need to take the time. We can not take the time & follow the doctor blindly & end up DEAD too, the choice is yours !! Guest guest
Here are some links. Certainly, there are many of us who don't need extra iron, and/or many people may even be getting too much through their diet. All the tests you've mentioned are exactly the way it should be, but look at what Dr. Mercola has to say about how high or low those levels should be, from person to person. http://www.mercola.com/2000/nov/12/excess_iron.htm I just love this link, as it talks about other things that can cause the ferritin to be either elevated or down due to other acute causes. With these conditions, maybe treating isn't such a good idea, but, you know, it doesn't really say exactly that, is the problem. http://www.ironpanel.org.au/AIS/AISdocs/labq1ab.htm This one concerns people with kidney disease and dialysis patients. http://www.dialysispatients.org/anemia.cfm Yeh, I think you're right. Treating right away can be dangerous, as ALL these tests have to be done together, in order to determine if anemia is already in the picture. Guest guest
This is exactly one of the things that those articles I just posted, are concerned with, and why it isn't always good to assume that a person needs iron but for a short period of time. Chronic illness and inflammation do use up more iron, but it may not be needed once the illness is over with/under control. What happened to you is exactly what some of these articles go into. What fascinated me in at least one of these articles is that you do not go just by ferritin, but you must look at what the balance is, as far as transferrin receptors, saturation, hemoglobin, MCV, all at one time, never separately, because they are all related to each other, plus the cause of it all. I am a book designer and typesetter and I take refresher courses and read books regularly to stay current in my field — both conventionally and outside the box...doctors’ approaches boggle my mind~~!! sue sue Sue, I completely agree we should not put anything in our bodies we don't know about.
