There are still too many people out there who look upon diabetes as a game and not the serious disease that it really is. I'm due to have more surgery on one of my knees which is still troublesome even after being replaced and then 'revised' so I ain't looking forward to Sept 21 one little bit. More so because most hospital medics think that you leave your brains in the lobby when you register and that really p***es me off. I was told the last time " Oh that's OK, we'll just hook you up to an insulin pump " and then went into sulking mode when I said " No you won't until I know exactly what insulin you'll be using in the pump and exactly why I need a pump when I'm quite capable of testing and injecting myself " Now all my medical notes say " difficult patient insisting on being responsible for his own medication " What a way to win a war. < > Before closing I might mention that I visited one of the aero clubs at our local airport and told the chief instructor that I was an IDD and was told in no uncertain terms that they would be happy to teach me fly but I would never be allowed to fly solo, not through their club anyway. I probably am guilty of not taking diabetes seriously, when I was first diagnosed and until this past December. I have been changing, I have been patient with myself during the change. Before, I would just eat and not think of diabetes and just brushed it off that I am not a good diabetic. Reading peoples email and having these messages sent to my box keeps the diabetes in my face and head. It is working. I know I have to get better at it to live to enjoy life with my family and hopefully future grandkids. I stopped seeing my endo because he had horrible bedside manner. Would give you medication and say here do this come back in 4 weeks. I was injecting insulin 6 times a day and the numbers were not good. I went to my primary doctor and now I take 2 byetta a day and 1 lantus and 2000 metformin extended. I know you do not like byetta, but I believe it has given me the opportunity not to gain weight from all the insulins I was taking. I was taking byetta 2x, humalog on a scale 3x and lantus 1 x plus metformin. My doctor may change me to levamir instead of lantus because it is not suppose to make you gain weight. Can you believe, I injected all of these faithfully (tiny needle with pens) but I was depressed and could not inject 1 needle in December. You were right when you said I would study the sight, look, hesitate. I worked myself in a frenzy. I am sorry to hear you have to have more surgery. I would not be looking forward to the surgery either. I only had micro surgery on my knee in 1984, for some chondromalasia. They had to shave under the knee cap. Micro surgery was quite new back then. My knee still never feels the same. I can not imagine having to go through knee replacement and more surgeries. I hope it goes well for you. You probably have a red flag next to your name in the hospital records.
