Guest guest Posted July 2, 2007 Report Share Posted July 2, 2007 Sad, but at times like this, I am reminded of why I would love to have EMS mandated in Texas. I have no doubt that there are many areas still out there that suffer from the same lack of coverage that you have, I worked for a few myself, and by no means am I naïve enough to not realize it. I just assumed that you lived in a more densely populated area for some reason. Unfortunately, the only way to gain the support is for one of them to suffer needlessly because the only unit and/or staff is not available for them in a time of need. RE: Re: Volunteer Law Rural County. Because of the size of Abilene, our area is not classified as rural even though we are extremely rural, which knocks us out of a lot of grants and such. The politicians won't get behind formation of an ESD (political backlash fears), and the community still thinks EMS is a right, not something they should have to pay to support. The County Commissioners give a few thousand a year toward equipment and training, but that is all the support we get. Everything else is based on reimbursements on about 17 transports a month average. There is not enough population base to make a subscription program worthwhile IF you could convince the majority of the population to join, which would never happen. So while we have discussed trying to put on one full time person to start, the money is just not there. The area is several hundred square miles (can't remember off the top of my head). LOL However, many areas of the state, heck, many areas of the nation are woefully underfunded for EMS and continue to be that way. It is very sad. And yes, sometimes a tragedy involving lack of EMS or undercoverage brings the situation to a forefront but usually the forward motion generated by the situation peters out before a full resolution has been reached, and things go back to the way they were before. We have complained on here many times about apathy in EMS - talking about our own EMS community. But that apathy extends out to the communities in which we live - we are a society who expects skilled emergency personnel with high quality equipment to respond but we DON'T expect to have to pay for that.
