Our heat wave is over for at least a few days. It has been in the 90's

today but the humidity wasn't quite as high as it had been. I'm very thankful

for this break in the weather. Now, I'm praying we get some much needed rain.

Eunice,

We have finally been getting a bit of rain in Pensacola, which is a good

thing; however, all the mosquitoes are back in full force. The dry weather

really kept them at bay. When I left and Noble this evening, it almost

felt good out. The humidity is still high, but the temperature this evening was

a bit cooler. I can't wait for November.

Hi ,

We still have the humidity, but the temperatures are lower. We really need

rain. It is predicted for this week. Hopefully, they are right.

I'm ready for 70-75 degrees in the daytime and 50 degrees at night. I love

to sleep with the windows open.

The body uses up a more energy when it gets hot in order to keep an

acceptable temperature. In doing so glucose resources are depleted and

if they are low to begin with then a hypo can result. That's why

diabetics are advised against a prolonged sauna, steam room or hot bath.

I was told that hot tubs were not good for diabetics, but no one ever

told me why. This explains why.

But they can be used with extreme care right? Does anyone use a hot

tub? My husband and I were going to get one.

I sure they can be used with care Dale but I would suggest that you test

yourself before going into the tub to make sure that you're not already

too low and don't stay in too long . It might also be a good idea to

have a word with your doc about it beforehand.

Speak for yourself Barry, hot tubs, jaccuzis these are the great

things of life. Healthwise i would rather be sitting in a jaccuzi than

stuck in a traffic jam on the north circular!

You and me both Simon, I've done my share of sitting in traffic on the

North Circular, although I'm not a great fan of jacuzzi. But you've got

to admit that anywhere that's warm and damp is a good breeding ground

for all sorts of nasties.

If you think about anything long enough, you can gross yourself out! (After

all, think of some of our foods and where they come from...like cheese for

instance, where the milk comes from and the 'nasties' that turn it into

cheese...especially blue cheese) Or pate, and escargot (which I guess could

be considered 'nasties' on their own! Not to mention the nasties on door

knobs, public telephones, and I don't know of many bars that hand wash

glasses and test the sanatizer for both the proper strength and leave

glasses in it for the right amount of time (when you think of it, unless the

bar as a dishwashing machine, glasses can be pretty gross... I've seen them

barely get rinsed, and another drink made in them). Of course, don't even

get me started on what happens behind kitchen doors in a restaurant!

I've used the hottub at my health club for almost 15 years... no problems

yet. I also swim in lakes and rivers from time to time.

Many things worth doing have risk involved.

Mike, there are reports all over the place that suggest that the

obsession we have with hygeine and cleanliness can have counter

effects later in life because of the lack of individual immunity

caused by NOT being exposed to bugs germs etc. I'm a firm believer

that childrewn should be encouraged to eat dirt from a very early age

just to build up those immunities. Who knows the surging rates of

diabetes could easily be partially explained on too much hygiene and

cleanliness as children.

Just before my youngest daughter began to crawl (or so we thought) and

walk we sat her in a shady spot in the garden one sunny afternoon on a

rug with a few of her favourite things to keep her occupied. Within the

½ minute or so we took our eyes off her she managed to taste and partly

ingest 1 slug, 1 worm, 1 snail, a dandelion flower and some of its

leaves, an anonymous beetle, mud and grass and a piece of coal (goodness

knows where that came from) with no apparent ill effects. Although I do

remember that her nappy was a funny colour for the next day or so.

Yuk!! You're right, we do tend to cosset our kids far too much these

days. Does anyone remember being given a 'cat's lick' to clean up hands

and faces before coming in from play to eat tea. I recall that good

table manners were considered more important than cleanliness. I also

remember 'sweet pee' from some members of the family but in those far

off days no one paid any heed to that or even thought that it might be

diabetes.

I agree. (However, I don't know if I would force a kid to eat dirt... leave

that to the other kids...) ;-)

I do think that antibiotic soaps should be sold only with a prescription.

That household bleach has two uses, laundry and (since it's really cheap)

cleaning the toilet. If kids want to pull a carrot from the garden and wipe

it off on their tshirt and eat it... go ahead (the dirt won't hurt them and

that's what the bleach is for.. cleaning the tshirt)..., etc...

As a people, we are overly obsessed with germs, probably to our detriment.
