Guest guest
Interesting. I was unaware that Dallas felt there may be a need to improve their EMS delivery. I appauld their effort. I was concerned with the percieved inability to find competent Paramedic personnel. Perhaps there is a problem with finding the co-ability of Firefighter and Paramedic. Perhaps it would be a more beneficial action to seek personnel who may only fit into one or the other tasks? Very intersting. Guest guest
Danny, You have hit the nail on the head. I am in the Dallas Fire Rescue service area at my work. It is hit or miss as to the level of service I will receive. In the past received both excellent and terrible service but it seems to depend on the crew, station and shift. I have called DFR twice in the last week, one encounter was excellent and one was a total nightmare. The crew I had a problem with told me they only had to ride the ambulance every few shifts and the other times they got to ride the engine. I think if Dallas Fire Rescue wants to improve the level of service and become the best fire based EMS service in the country, they must change the perception of their field staff. Riding the ambulance is not a punishment for Mongo, as Wes so eloquently stated. Guest guest
Call me a Pollyanna (and Lou has probably called me that along with other things), but it's a privilege to provide medical care to others.? If you don't have that attitude, I don't want you providing EMS care. -Wes Re: Dallas Fire/Rescue EMS Vision Program Interesting. Guest guest
As a child of the 70's and the great ny and Roy, I grew up believing that Fire and Paramedicine went together. I had the privilege of doing my internship there 16 years ago. Like Bernie, I saw both ends of the spectrum in preceptors. I applaud them for looking critically at their system with the goal of improving it for the ultimate benefit of the patient. If you improve the system for those that deliver the service, you may improve the patient care. Much of it may be over utilization. The best of us get run down running 20-30 calls a shift. Peak Demand units are an excellent idea, especially when you consider these are staffed by personnel on overtime. Decrease the overall number of calls per unit and allow adequate relief from the Rescue. If you go to Paramedic only, there would never be any relief from it. Add a promotional component to the system where there are levels to promote to such as FTO, Senior Medic (Engineer level), LT, Capt, etc and give it equal budgetary and operational priority. Enhance the training and match protocols in the best systems. These are but a few things that might help. They are one of the largest and busiest EMS systems in the state. They should be a model for emulation. Hopefully with this look they will get there. Guest guest
This is something Amarillo Medical Services was doing 23 years ago when I worked for them as a new paramedic. Glad to see DFR is doing the same. Maybe they will be as good as AMS is. -MH ________________________________ From: texasems-l [texasems-l ] On Behalf Of Lemming, Steve [slemming@...] Sent: Wednesday, June 27, 2007 10:49 AM To: texasems-l Subject: RE: Dallas Fire/Rescue EMS Vision Program As a child of the 70's and the great ny and Roy, I grew up believing that Fire and Paramedicine went together.
