I follow this group pretty regularly but seldom contribute. I am very gratefull to have the opportunity to refer to it when I feel the need. My question is: some time ago, I believe that I read in a post here that sometimes people who have thryroid problems can have problems with hip pain related to thyroid trouble. Is this true? My hips hurt so bad I can hardly walk. I have never had any trouble of this kind before. At first I thought it might be from laying in bed for nearly a frigging YEAR! But maybe it is a symptom of thyroid trouble. Any idea, Anyone?

Judy-- i've got pain in my hips as well--but it comes and goes, it's like a pain in the hip bone or joint. it's really strange. i think it may have to do with thyroid but since you said you were in bed for a yr, it might be something else. did you exercise while you were in bed because it may be atrophy? palmajudy tiernan wrote: I follow this group pretty regularly but seldom contribute. Hmmm, I'm interested to see what answers you get too. I have hip pain quite regularly, but never thought of it as thyroid related. I stiffen quickly after exertion too... JudyP

It could be a few different things...

Think about the pain... is it a muscle pain, or a bone pain or a tendon pain?

Is it painful to move around, walking, standing?

Is it painful to lay in various positions?

Does it hurt more when you first get up and move around or after you've been up and about for a while, or all day?

Is it out the outside of the hip, the front, or more around the back?

For me.. I have muscle issues when I'm more immobile... and tendon issues when I'm on the wrong meds.... It can sometimes take a long while to figure out the cause and effect but I think it's a good thing to do.. if you can figure out more about the why of it it's easier to figure out what to do to help it...

Oh.. it just struck me.... you spent a lot of time horizontal? Are you doing any stretches to limber things up now that you are moving around more? I'm thinking tight muscles and tendons..

I'll wait to hear from you about the where's and when's of how it hurts so that we can figure it bitter...

Thank you all for your responses to my question about hip pain! I really do think it could have something to do with meds. I am about to do labs again. If it has to do with meds, for some reason, I feel like it may mean I need T3. I am taking 2 & 1/2 grains of Amour. I've been at that for about a month. Been on meds about 8 mos. I still don't feel good, although I sure feel better than before RAI and meds. That was the year in bed not knowing what was wrong. Anyway, the pain is alot like maybe having a hip out of place, along with stiffness and aching. It is always the same, not worse sometimes and better others. I would guess that it is from lack of excercise except now I AM moving around more and it doesn't get better. I am not able to do too much more than just get what has to be done done. I will probably go to the Chiropractor and see if that helps. I really

just thought I'd ask and see if anyone else has this symptom. You know, I'm post-menopausal and before the big whamy with the thyroid, menopause itself was always full of surprises!!! I guess I've been thinking that as soon as I got RAI and meds, I would be back to my old self right away. Not so, I guess. When menopause hits, it surely must be more that the sex hormones that go crazy. Thyroid is a hormone. I don't know. Out of work for a year, not back to work yet, no insurance, a person without insurance isn't in a position to get alot of tests done to try to see WHAT ALL might be wrong. When I was working, I met alot of women through my work and spent alot of quality time with them. I think there are many women who have thyroid problems at the onset of menopause, and God knows what else. Their lives go steadily south as they feel worse and worse and no one gets it that they are

really just unable to function. They used to put women like that in mental hospitals, and then their husbands could reasonably go look for someone young and fresh I probably shouldn't be complaining. If we were living 100 years or so ago, or even less.,we'd probably be dead one way or another. In this time we all can have faith that we will once again experience health and a good life. There are so many possibilities available to us. Thanks for this chance to vent. And thank you all for this forum, especially those of you who man it and maintain it!!!! I think I was just hoping to hear that everyone had hip pain (though I really don't want everyone to have hip pain) and that they were sure it was part of the thyroid nightmare. Then I would rest assured that as soon as my meds get perfect (LOL) all would be well. I believe that it still will be. I have a strong suspicion that

meds are a key to this. I hope that you all experienced some kind of blessing today, no matter how small. I had a wonderful day playing cards with my family. Pain leaves when joy enters!

Hi Judy,

I didn't respond to your post before because I've been going through a bad

patch due to running out of Armour - which is so hard to get here in France.

I have experienced very bad hip pain, in one form or another. Mainly, it is

a in the side, at the level of my hip joint, like a knife being plunged into

the joint. It first started when my hypo symtoms started getting really bad,

after an intense iodine treatment given by an ignorant homeopath. It got

really bad four years ago - so bad that I couldn't sit, couldn't walk,

couldn't lie down, could only stand and scream ! lol My doctor thought I'd

broken my hip and rushed me into hospital. Xrays revealed nothing, so the

surgeon that had operated on my back two years earlier (for a slipped disc

that I didn't have !) insisted that the pain must come from my back and not

my hip !(?) Once in bed with intravenous pain killers, the pain disappeared,

which made them suspicious that I was faking it (why would anyone want to do

that ? I'm an actor, ok, but not that good ! lol). So, they tricked me into

seeing a psychiatrist, telling me only that he was a 'pain specialist'. This

moron insisted that the pain I was experiencing was a cry for help because

my children had all flown the nest and I didn't know what to do with my life

!!! This regardless of the fact that they'd left ten years previously and

since I had started a couple of new careers. As a result, I bawled out the

surgeon on his daily round, surrounded by his devoted students - who stood

and giggled - and left the hospital in a state of high dugeon. After my

departure, I recieved a diagnosis of 'arthritis'. lol

The fact that my TSH was 11 at that point, was laughed out of court. There's

nothing wrong with your thyroid, they said. But I fired my doctor and

managed to find one that would prescribe me T3 along with my T4, and the

pain lessened - although it was still there.

A year ago, I found a wonderful doctor - a hormone specialist - who put me

on Armour. And the pain disappeared !!! However, it does still come back if,

like recently, I have to go without my Armour, or severely reduce the dose.

So, in conclusion, lets just say that all sorts of aches and pains can be -

and probably are - thyroid related - directly or indirectly. And if you feel

instinctively that it is, then you must follow your gut feeling ! Don't ever

let anybody deny your symptoms and experiences. You know your body better

than anyone, and only you can know what you are feeling and have

experienced. Other people can't even guess most of the time ! Ignore those

that say this or that cannot possibly be thyroid related - unless they can

prove it with another positive diagnosis - and thier treatment works ! But,

of course, the best test is always to up the dose of thyroid hormone, and

see if it goes away.

OK, so this is only my opinion, and I'm not medecally trained. But I am a

specialist of my own body, and this is the crede I live by. I do hope that

you find relief from your pain, by whatever means.

Best wishes and good health,

Lili

Hi LiLi, Your story is so classic, these damn physicians. I'm sorry

you have gone through this, I think all of us in the thyroid world

deal with tons of docs who have there heads where the sun doesn't

shine. This makes me so mad. I've had similar response, more than

once. " But your normal, your labs look great " , GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

When I talk to people who are suspicious they may have a thyroid

problem, the first thing they all say is, my doctor said my thyroid is

normal. Sigh!! I've told, and fired by the way, 5 endos, I'm not a

lab value, what's normal for me is not necessarily what is normal on

your damn chart.

Keep tough baby, you are right, and they are lost.
