Guest guest
Thanks kats and Carol - Before I moved to New Mexico, my synthroid dose seemed to be at proper dose at .175mcg. The doctor never told me results or suggested reading up on labs, thyroid, etc. Just here take this pill and I'll let you know when you're better. Nobody ever told me about diet - I remember that I was using soy milk for almost a year. Oh well, that's in the past. Shame on me for being so foolish. My weight was about 260 when I had kidney infection, then I lost about 20 lbs and gained about 30 back when I discontinued synthroid. So according to the rule of thumb, I should be taking about .250 - .275mcg. synthroid? I found lab results from 3-23-06 No Fasting TSH was 1.125 No T3 or T4 AST was 44 H 0-40 normal. Glucose 123 H 65-99 normal Another lab from 1-13-06 Fasting TSH was 5.572 There normal range was 0.350-5.500 AST was 66 H 0-40 Normal ALT 67 H 0-55 " " Glucose 166 H 65-99 Normal My present doctor wants me to get the following lab tests - Fasting Mg Po4 Lipid CBC Diff CH7 She wants me to get thyroid checked in 6-7 weeks , so I'll get this done at same time. I'm having a difficult time keeping my papers organized, it's so frustrating at times, want to cry or punch the wall. Everytime it seems that I'm getting a handle on this, it also feels more confusing. Need to relax and clear my mind. Think the doctor wants to rule out diabetes? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks Jeff
Guest guest
Jeff, It is quite possible that you have diabetes too. I have learned in my research that autoimmune disorders can come in multiples, and some are even linked together. The thyroid organ is the pacemaker if you will to all other organs, the hormones it produces help to tell other organs how to properly function. Alot like a car engine if it misfires because of bad points or plugs it effects the efficiency of how well the engine will perform. So if your thyroid is sending misinformation it effects how the heart beats, how much plaque builds up in your arteries. How effieciently your body uses its fuel systems which is where slow digestion and dibetes connection comes in to play. I hope this explanation hasn't confused you but, it seems to be the best way to describe how the thyroid organ and its functioning effects all other organs. Anytime the body attacks itself it is considered an autoimmune disorder. I joined the American Thyroid Association that is connected to www.thyroid.org and I have been studying alot. Betwwen the studies and Toppers explanations I have a better understanding of whats going on with the old body here. Sometimes I wish we were more like cars and could trade in used parts for new ones. If you go over to the column on the side you will find a links section, I believe in this section you can find a lab tracker sheet that you can use to keep all your labs in a row. Now this maybe more of a catch 22, if your thyroid levels are functioning properly you should be able to lose some wieght and be able to control the diabetes by diet alone..if you use Metformin to control your sugar levels it becomes harder to lose wieght. Everything kind of runs together..but you need to make sure the doctor is treating both your thyroid and your diabetes. www.diabetes.ca is one site amongst many that have a lot of diet info, glucose index, planning etc. regarding diabetes and controlling it. I suggest you give it a look. Kats3boys

It make sense and also answered another question I had - cholesterol and thyroid. When I asked my doc if hypothyroid meant I had an auto- immune disorder, she said that it was an immune deficiency disorder, not autoimmune. I think she explained it this way, but it's still confusing - auto-immune is where the body attacks itself and immune suppressed is where the body can't fight against foreign invaders properly. She must have asked me about 3 times if I was ever checked for HIV. Are they similar? When I left her office the last time, I came away with a great deal of compassion for people with AIDS. It's difficult to imagine the fight they must go through. Things couild always be worse - but now it's time to get rid of all of those negative thoughts and focus on the positive. Enjoyed your posts yesterday. Have you ever read Norman Peale? Thanks again for your explanation, it really helped. One of the problems with many of the web sites is that they're too technical. My mind is at about a 4th grade level right now. If only my emotional level could catch up. lol Enjoy your day. " This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.
