For what it's worth, I once had a hyperthyroid cat. One of the

possible treatments was to give him radioactive pills to kill the

thyroid - and to keep him isolated for a month in a university vet

hospital, where his litter would be disposed of as radioactive waste

(one fellow in Berkeley apparently snitched some pills, dumped his

cat's litter in the trash, and I heard that it triggered hazardous

waste alarms...)

But anyway - I treated him instead with some little white pills for

the couple years until he died of kidney disase that cats are prone

to. The name tapazole comes to mind. Not radioactive. You just have

to take them for the rest of your life. I remember that they were

people pills, not specifically cat pills.

I'm not an MD, but it does appear there are alternatives to

radioactive iodine to treat hyperthyroidism. Maybe get a second

opinion?
