Guest guest
Hi all, I am new to the area & have been having a hard time finding a doctor that won't treat me like a nut case. One just wanted to give me meds for depression & anxiety. Another, I convinced to order lab tests but he only ordered TSH which was 4.9. He said that it was just barely over range & replacement hormone wouldn't do much good & started lecturing me on exercise & diet. I just sat there stunned for a moment, then I said to him, I had RAI a year ago for hyperthyroidism & my TSH is only going to get worse. He gave me an rx for synthroid 25 mcg. Like that's going to help. Well I tried it for a couple of weeks & I feel worse than ever. Anyway, if anyone knows of a doctor that has some since in Brevard county or even any area within driving distance please let me know. Thanks, Carol

Be patient, someone will give you some answers. Aren't you already on syntroid? It is truly amazing about some of these doctors! where did they get their license? You should have punched him in the head as hard as you could and then said, " Stop being such a baby. You need to get in shape. " Didn't they start you on synthroid after RAI? Hang in there. Guest guest
Hi Jeff, I only had a small dose of RAI (just enough to stop the hyper symptoms is what I was told). The endo I was using at the time said I would eventually go hypo but not right away. I had my levels tested every few weeks up until I moved away from the area. (I think they had an office pool going on to see how fast my TSH would go up). Guest guest
It's amazing, everytime I get on this site, there's new information for me to learn. Nobody ever told me how to take meds - foods to avoid -etc. Everything was Top Secret Those ##^%&'s. All I can remember was being very careful after RAI not to touch anything, disinfect toilet seat, scrub shower a few times after use and then it seemed to take forever for meds . Started at .025 and would wait to see doctor, then .050 and same thing, until finally I leveled off at .175mcg, so that was seven changes in dosage. That entire time was a nightmare. No energy - all hypo symptoms. Looking back, the doctors should give us material to read and to always have available, especially with the brain slowing down. Was reading the post about panic attacks. Sure don't miss them. I remember DeNiro in movie saying " Doc, I'm having a panic attack, just thinking about panic attacks! " That actually happened to me. I don't get it. Why do these doctors keep us in the dark? So we won't complain? Ego? Ignorance? The more I think about it, the more angry it makes me. I need to get a notebook and a thermometer and start all over again. First question - Is it safe to assume my thyroid is dead? Expired, ceased to be, 6 feet under, not home, sold the farm, bit the dust, croaked, is a goner, passed on, went to that big place in the sky with other thyroids. Never heard of RAI to slow thyroid down. So, does your thyroid still function? From everything I've read so far, RAI makes us go hypo. However, there are times when a second dose of RAI is needed. This can get very confusing. Thanks Jeff > > > > > > Didn't they start you on synthroid after RAI? > > > > >

Synthroid is a synthetic T4 medication..so even with out RAI you should at least have a FT4 test done. I would go back to the doc and ask him to run a T4 test and if he refuses and gives you the diet and exercise excuse I would ask him to put it in writing so you can follow up with the medical board to make sure that is proper protocol for dealing with post RAI patients. What you need to do , and it is hard to do is find out how the meds work, what proper treatment is and then tell the doc how you want to be treated. Guest guest
Hi Kats3boys, Actually I had toxic multi-nodular goiter. I don't know if that makes any difference as far as labs go. Today I got an referral with an endo but not until next month. I checked & she is listed on the Armour site. So maybe she won't be as stuck in her ways as my primary physician is.. I have been told that she is very good. But, most endos work mostly with diabetics so I am cautious. I am going to ask my primary for some labs to be done before I see her. I was thinking TSH, ft3, & ft4, and maybe a thyroid US. Is there anything else you think I should ask for? Guest guest
Yes, I have thought of that. But I was hoping to get some personal recommendations. Do you know anyone there?
