Guest guest
Hi There, It's my understanding that most Thyca patients, at least in the US, don't see Oncologists. Most of us have an Endo who specializes in Thyca, or at least treats a fair amount of cases. I'm a total newbie here, I'm sure or Alisa or one of the other more experienced Thyca members will respond shortly. Hi, Kim Just wanted to wish you the best with your TT. I had my surgery in July of 2002. I have three kids too- 10, 8, 2 so I can relate very well to what you were saying. The surgery (I had a PT first and then the completion surgery a week later) was easy. I had an easy time with the recovery as well. Again, I wish you the best! n/NJ > > KIM
Guest guest
is right....an Endocrinologist is the appropriate Dr. to see Thyca patients. I know it's not the same as getting a personal recommendation for an Endo, but one place to look for one is on the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists site at www.aace.com (look under FIND AN ENDOCRINOLOGIST). You might also want to post where you live and if anyone else on the listserv is in your area, they might be able to recommend an Endo. Kim....please turn off your " Caps Lock " key when posting to the listserv....it looks like you are shouting at us! Marilyn Dx in 1994, papillary w/follicular variant & lung metastases. Positive scans in '94,'95,'96,'97,'98. 435mCi's RAI. Clean scans '99,'00,'02,'03...the last two scans w/Thyrogen.

Guest guest
Hi Kim, I have a different perspective on telling kids. When I was diagnosed I was also a volunteer in public education for the American Cancer Society. The word cancer was an everyday word in our home because of my work. My kids were told exactly what was wrong. I wanted them to understand so that if anyone heard hearsay about my health my kids would have the answers. And, in fact, that did happen. Other kids said, " your mom is going to die! " My children had all the right answers and were able to deal with it. You do what you think is best for your children, what they will be able to deal with, in my case it was telling them. I met a man while inpatient at Sloan Kettering who had two teenage daughters he hadn't told, they were 16 & 18. He was in for his second cancer operation. He said he was protecting them (?), I thought he was deceiving them. And I also suspected that his daughters knew because the full name of the hospital is Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He told them the next day. Generally speaking an oncologist is not used for thyroid cancer. A few people do use an oncologist but they are not endocrinologists and this is an endocrine disease. Most use an endocrinologist for follow up. A doctor with a large case load of thyca patients is desireable. Please turn off your caps. It looks like you are yelling at us....which I know you didn't mean to do! :-) Best wishes for a successful surgery! Gail dx: 1968, TT, pap. & foll. well differentiated w/hurthle cell, RAI, rad.neck dissection, lung surgery, hashimoto, tg antibody 575, iodine resistant, existing thyca nodules in lungs. Guest guest
Hi Kim! I have experienced this thyca but unfortunately trhough diesase of my younger daughter (13). The best thing is to tell the truth, and even better in all this is that you will not lie when telling that you will not die from this thing. I explained to my girl that she has some migration of the cells and tissue, she was operated at NCI and being not stupid, she realised that this was soething bad, so she asked and asked. With common words, common explanation you will make best thing. They will not be afraid and they will have good answer on any question or comment in the school. Guest guest
Hi Kim, I was lucky enough to be sent to an endocrinolist who is, I am told by many, one of the best here. I am also lucky enough I was able to ask my mothers oncologist for his opion on two occasions and he assured me they are doing all the right things. He also let me know I would only go to an oncologist if the cancer was well advanced and untreatable through I-131. My ENT Dr. (also have been told he's one of the best here)did the surgery, and he was also top of the line, I can say I have a scar to be proud of. lol After cancer was found after removing the left side I waited two weeks for TT, definitely long and stressful two weeks, but relieved it wasn't longer. I'll be thinking about you , OKC,OK LTL 6/26, TT 7/9/03 > HEY ALL, > > STILL HAVE 1 WEEK UNTIL MY TT. NEVER THOUGHT 2 WEEKS COULD TAKE SO > LONG TO GET HERE. Guest guest
--- Hi: I used a Surgical Oncologist who specializes in head, neck and breast surgery. As long as you use a doctor who has done thyroid surgery before and more than once you should be fine.
