Guest guest
Hi When my husband was renewing online his California Drivers license, they asked him, among various questions, if he had diabetes! He told me about it, since mine is due for renewal also in a few months. Has anyone else heard of this? I guess I will check the American Diabetes Association web site, but I found it interesting. Wonder if I will be " flagged " since I will put I do have diabetes.... Type 2 since

Guest guest
California Are applicants for a driver's license asked questions about diabetes? Yes. All first-time and renewal applicants are required to complete a section of the licensing application that contains questions about medical conditions. This section asks whether an individual has had a condition within the last five years that affects his or her ability to operate a motor vehicle safely. One of the conditions specifically listed as part of this question is diabetes. Drivers who answer " Yes " to this question may be required to have their physician complete a medical evaluation form. Guest guest
Hello and All - I moved to Washington DC last year, and also had to answer the diabetes question on the driver's license application. The on-line info about this said that if you were insulin-dependent, you would have to have a form signed by your doctor and an eye doctor saying you were fit to drive a car. I'm not insulin-dependent, so I thought this didn't apply to me. However, when I got to the front of the application line, I was told that I had to have the 2 forms signed because I have diabetes (the insulin-dependent requirement didn't seem relevant). So I had to go home, get the forms signed (one required an appointment), and then return with my application at a later date. Then they would only give me a license for 3 years instead of the standard 5 years. Will this bureaucratic requirement really keep people that have hypoglycemic reactions to their diabetes medications from driving? drivers license rules? Guest guest
Oh wow... I live in Wisconsin and I don't think we have that. But maybe if I moved and had to reapply in a different state I would run into it. I've had my license in WI since I was 16. drivers license rules? > > > > Hi > > When my husband was renewing online his California Drivers > license, they > asked him, among various questions, if he had diabetes! Guest guest
Really? I renewed my license in October and I don't recall seeing it. I probably just checked it and nobody asked and that was that. Here I was thinking we didn't have that. Where in Wisconsin are you Nolajane? Re: drivers license rules? Guest guest
I went in to get a change on my CDL and they asked this question. I probed a little bit and apparently it is recent that the DMV requires individuals with certain diseases that may include lapse of consciousness to report it. The physicians are actually required by law to submit this information. Pam Dixon (not a lurker anymore!) Guest guest
I renewed mine here in Oklahoma in June and they didn't ask that question. I don't think the bureaucrats thought that up yet. Guest guest
I live in Minnesota abd they have required drs. approval for many many years for diabetics on insulin. The dr. can fill out the form for anywheres from 3 or 6 months to 4 years. And they will pull your driver's license if it's not sent in on time. They did that to me this year but I just laughed because I had already turned my license in since I knew I would be declared legally blind this year. I haven't drove for 4 years so no sense renewing it again. But diabetes is the only thing they do this for, which is wrong because I know alot of people that have had major strokes or heart attacks that shouldn't be driving either. My eye dr " s parents both have AMD and still drive even tho' their son doesn't think they should. drivers license rules? Guest guest
> > Will this bureaucratic requirement really keep people that have > hypoglycemic reactions to their diabetes medications from driving? No. But... it helps to make sure people who are diabetic are being compliant in their treatment... possibly reducing the chances of it happening. Face it... you are less likely to have hypoglycemic reactions if you are under treatment from your doctor... rather than going and buying N and R without a prescription and administering it without testing (as a friend of mine does). Guest guest
I have seen this too. Though if I remember right, they are aimed at the insulin dependdent diabetics on insulin. In other words, all your type 1's and some type 2's. Me is a type 1, and I think I checked yes the last time I changed my address. I am up for renewal since a few months ago. Guest guest
I was looking to get into truck driving recently. i found that being insulin dependent, according to Michigan DOT regulations, ruled me out completely for driving even locally. Guest guest
California is getting more strict with their requirements for holding a driver's license. I was semi-retired, driving a transit bus, and planning on cutting down to 20 hours per week at the end of this year. I went from being a Type II to being diagnosed as a Type I who is now on insulin. Calif. law states that no one may drive a bus with more than 15 passengers if they take insulin. So, I lost my job, and am now drawing disability. I still have a Class B license, but I lost my passenger endorsement. I am still allowed to drive a truck, and if I wanted to, I could get a Class A license and drive a semi. I am on a pump, and I have not been even close to a low since being on pump, but I still cannot get my passenger endorsement back, unless I quit taking insulin. I used to get occasional lows on Metformin and Glyburide, especially when I skipped a meal, but that was a long time ago. Giles.
