Aubrie's hips etc.

Had a check up with the hip dr today. The brace is working. What I thought

was a SWASH brace is actually a ish Rite Brace. It would be better if

it were more restrictive because she can still pop her hips a bit in it, but

if it were any more restrictive, it would impede her walking too much. As

it is, it greatly reduces the popping. She feels secure and stable in it so

she's great about wearing it all waking hours. But, if you knew Aubrie, you

wouldn't be surprised that she would be so agreeable.

4 months ago, she had a 20 degree spinal curvature. I didn't ask about it

then cuz I was overwhelmed with the brace idea. This time, I did ask. They

re-xrayed and found that it's now at 17 degrees. So - no worries for the

time being. But I have to say that I'm scared to death about her future

mobility with the hips and spine combined. Plus she fell one day due to her

ankle giving out. She has pronation of the ankles. The day she fell, she

wasn't wearing the hip brace and was on uneven ground. We are hoping that

the brace will support her positioning enough to help her ankles indirectly.

Gosh - I hate the thought of her getting ankle braces too! And eventually a

spinal brace??? I'm projecting, I know. I don't dwell on it - but I just

needed to vent.

I hope our horseback riding will keep her spine straight. We'll get a

recheck in 6 months again. I'm praying for no growth spurts. Isn't that

awful??

Here's another vent. I know many of you deal with extremely difficult

behaviors. I met a mom the other day whose son has autism. He is

self-abusive and he hurts her. She had bruises all over her arms and face

from him. I felt such incredible compassion for her and for all of you who

share your struggles here. But then I felt guilty because I live with this

little cherub who would never do anything wrong or hurt anybody. And you

know, that's not all good either. The school social worker is trying to

figure out how to help her cope with " naughtiness " (or what she perceives as

such) in others. She gets so upset when someone is bad or arguing. I mean,

even to the point of us not being able to have typical spats in the

household. It's crazy. Even the good stuff is a " problem " . The bright

side - at ISD we have a team of people trying to help me figure her out -

and people who seem knowledgable and open-minded enough that we may actually

be successful!

On a positive note, we went to eat at Wolfgang Puck's restaurant after our

Shriners visit. I had a hair in my soup so the waiter and chef will surely

remember us. Plus - Aubrie is obviously disabled now with her hearing aid

headband so visible and her hip brace. We asked the waiter if Puck ever

comes. Turns out he's coming next week, but he didn't know a date. So he

suggested I leave the question on my comment card. We came home to an

e-mail invite to a gathering at the restaurant with Mr. Puck on Tues night!

Now, this will mean leaving town as soon as Aubrie gets home from school,

missing Girl Scouts, and getting home way past bedtime - but I think we

can't pass it up.

After Puck's, we went to Cirque du Soleil. It's phenomenal! This is my 3rd

show, Aubrie and DJ's second. If you haven't been to one, I highly

recommend it. I called for special seating (front row) due to Aubrie's

vision. I called soon after tickets went on sale. We got 2 seats in the

accessible first row with 2 seats right next to them - and they were half

price. So the 4 of us went for less than $200. That's a bargain! No

bargains once we arrived tho - soda was $5. Yes, $5!!!! Anyway - fabulous

show and very agreeable to people with disabilities - just call the box

office direct as soon as sales begin. If those seats next to the accessible

seats are taken, you won't be able to get your party together - just one

person with the disabled person.

I'm jabbering. Thanks for listening!

WOW, what difference in her curvature!!! I can't imagine having to wear it, but

it sure seems to have made a good difference. I bet you can expect extra help

with the hippotherapy.

What a wonderful night--Puck's, Cirque du Soleil! And of course, you must go

meet MR. Puck!! Can't wait to see those pictures!!

Bel-

You know I'll never stop blabbering on and on. It's what keeps me sane.

Although it may contribute to the readers' insanity! :-)

You've got it exactly - she has a response that is unequal to the situation.

Yes, your parents were arguing, and that's upsetting to any child, but you

were very affected by it. She's the same. Often, she perceives something

as much more " mean " than it is. She had a very hard time in soccer when you

were supposed to steal the ball from the opponent - cuz you know stealing

isn't nice!

Michele,

Sounds like good news to me. Yea about the reduction of the curvature of

Aubrie's spine. I am sure horseback riding will also help. It'll help with

everything.

About Aubrie's ankles- Patty had inserts made so that it'll keep having to

wear braces at bay. So far so good. They also help with her hips being more

even.

By the way, Wolfgang Puck lived in the town next to mine. I met him. He's

wonderful and very personal. I am not surprised on the invite. He'll just

love meeting Aubrie. Got to get that girl cooking soon! Bring one of his

cookbooks with you and he'll autograph it.

Glad to hear all the good news. More than that every time you post about

the new school I am more and more impressed.

Take care,

Bonnie

Michele,

You will have to be our " culture advisor " . All these opportunities and

experiences are fabulous. Partaking of the best life has to offer; what a

downright intelligent thing to do!

And the value to all of you as you reflect back on your life. I see CHARGE

shrinking before our very eyes.

Bonnie-

We are so excited about meeting Chef Puck! I'm glad to hear he is likely to

meet our expectations. His head Midwestern chef called to clarify the

invite and was so wonderful! We'll be his VIP guests and he'll be sure

Aubrie has time with Chef Puck. When I mentioned that we needed to stop at

the store for a cookbook (she has Emeril and Ray's) he said not to

bother - he'll take care of that. Wow!

I looked up info on Chef Puck and found that he's received humanitarian

awards and has a foundation that gives to lots of organizations. I won't

hit it up hard tonight, but wouldn't it be cool if we could get some

recognition and support for CHARGE???? My thought is that I can email him

afterwards with details after just a mention if it fits into the

conversation tonight.

And the Midwestern chef said he'd like to keep in touch so that we can be

invited when others come to town. " Malto " is expected in a couple

months. All of this has not been bad for Puck - I bought $200 worth of

appliances this weekend after watching him on HSN!!!!!!!!! Since we truly

choose Puck's restaurant for lunch when we are in for dr's appts, it won't

be hard to keep up the relationship. The food is great and it's at the Art

Museum. In St. Louis, the museum and parking are free so it's lovely to

browse the artwork, have a nummy lunch, and be off to our appt or home.

Degas' Little Dancer is there so we always are sure to stop and say " hi " to

her :-)

Tonight's event is at the Contemporary Museum of Art. Never been there but

I'm really looking forward to it. I love art and can't always get my men to

want to go. Now they'll be captive audiences. The meet-and-greet party

will have full run of the museum after hours with drinks and hors d'ourves.

I hope we know how to act!

I'll tell you guys all about it tomorrow.
