I should have said the chemo throws you into menopause and if you are older

like my onc said " at my age " which is 46 she said the ovaries can't usually

take it and they become toast/non-functional.

So what begins as " chemopause " becomes menopause.

hugs!

Hi Anita, just catching up on the emails. I had tamoxifen for a short time when

I was first diagnosed and then premenopausal, (in 1996) (then went onto

something else,) then in 2001 I had tamoxifen again when I was post menopausal

in 2001 and had developed secondaries in the bones. I took it for about a year.

And now in 2007 my oncologist has suggested trying it again as I am running out

of choices and am reluctant to go down the chemo path sooner than I need.

Tamoxifen, so my onc tells me is the only drug that you can try again, the other

AIs meet resistance from the cancer, though how they know the others can't be

tried again I don't know. This is a question I need to ask my onc, for instance

Arimidex that I now haven't taken for 6 years may work for me after all this

time, we will see. Cheers Velvet (UK)

Hi Anita,

I'm amazed you haven't had any side effects on Femara.

It was brutal on me. I had such severe joint pain that I looked crippled

walking around bent over with a walker. It was awful. The hot flashes were

intense as well and the facial hair was coming in like I was a guy. I also

bulked

up like a male (not fat looking, just bigger looking, if that makes sense)

I'm now on tamoxifen and the hot flashes are less aggitating.

I was pre-menapausal before chemo & it toasted my ovaries. They called it

chemopause at the doctor's office.

The chemo throws you into full blown menapause in a couple weeks.

hugs,

Dari
