We got the news the other day that Patty isn't eligible for a BAHA yet. Her

ENT Specialist said that when he went in there for the mastoid down and the

rebuilding of the ear canal and drum that her inner workings are way too

malformed. He said if we put the BAHA in it might actually harm her hearing

more.

Patty's Audiologist agrees. We'll look at it again if or when she looses more.

She hasn't had an infection in months so we're hoping she'll stabilize

forever!

Not so happy but moving on. Patty's OK with it. But that's Patty!

I know that's a huge disappointment when you felt like you were all ready

for it - but i also know that Patty is one of the most resilient people i

" know " and she certianly has more patience than... um... anything ever?

Bonnie-

I've never heard of anything like that. Interesting. Please keep us posted

as things move along. Did you understand why the BAHA would harm things?

Michele,

No I don't understand it completely. Apparently Patty's inner workings are

incredibly involved. He said when he went in that the hearing bones are so

different he couldn't identify them and he couldn't do a thing about them.

All the other stuff inside there is different as well.

But with that I'm thinking another opinion is on the way.

Bonnie,

This is very interesting to me because has a BAHA. They never did a

CAT scan, I am not sure if he ever had a CAT SCAN or MRI of his inner ears

actually. They always went off his audiograms and said he had a

near-functioning cochlear and that's what he needed to make this work. The

screw sits right next to the cochlear and the sound bounces off that so I am

still trying to understand how it could harm residual hearing. It doesn't

touch anything. This is the first time I am hearing this. I know

has to have a middle ear malformation because most of his loss on the right

side was conductive and the left all nerve damage. But it was the right

side we were concerned with and air conduction hearing aides stopped

working, but bone conduction was great. So, they went off the fact that

bone conduction results were so good that the BAHA would be beneficial.

I am baffled at what you are saying. I was told it didn't matter what the

inner workings looked like because the BAHA bypasses all of that and as long

as the cochlear was functioning this was a good way to go. But I guess

every case is so different. I am just concerned now with the fact that it

could harm hearing, but I guess 3 years later for us it doesn't matter.

Anyway, does Patty benefit from hearing aides?

Bonnie, where did you go for this information? I never heard of this being

a problem. They did 's BAHA no questions likethis eveyr arose. I

beleive we livein the same area.

Bonnie-

Let us know about that other opinion. This just doesn't make sense - but we

know that our kids don't always make sense. If I remember, I plan to ask

about it when we go for surgery. I'm intensely curious. If it's true that

a BAHA can be harmful for some people, why would they put it on anyone

without doing an MRI or something first?

Cathie,

Yes we live in the same area. I'm in MA.

Her ENT is the one who called us to tell us of this. I am going to call for

another opinion. They said no to Patty because of her structural

abnormalities. He couldn't make identification of her hearing bones and said

there was

no way to fix it. I thought, yea so a BAHA would do the trick. But then he

said Patty's cochlea is also involved, made differently and as of yet they

can't see the semicircular canals but he thinks they're there. With all that

is going on in there he said no to a BAHA.

He didn't say never, he said not now. For some reason he thinks it won't

help much and might do damage- the reason for the second opinion. Patty's

hearing is degenerative because of constant ear infections. The last surgery

on

the right has lead her to a healthy ear. With that she's still severe to

profound but with an aid she's moderate to severe. Of course there's that

sensorineural component and she drops of at 2000Hz. Her left is totally deaf.

When they did 's BAHA did they look at the cochlea?

Again, another opinion is needed before I totally go with what this doctor

says.

Thanks.

Hi Patty,

we had 's BAHA at NYU Cochlear Implant Center. They said she had

semicicular canals and teh cochelar would be ok for a cochelar implant. But

they

wanted to try the BAHA first. (even though the losses are seperate issues)

this is another decission we made based on what they told us. So after the

BAHA problems we asked them to pursue the Cochealr implant. Then they told

us, she was not a cadidate for the Cochlear b/c they didnt think she could

process the sound EVEN if they could get it to her brain. So we went back to a

hearing aide! She still has teh BAHA but will not toelrate it. And now, we

are really see her respond more with the hearing aide. we also went to CHOPS

for a 2nd opinion fo rthe cochlear and they said no b/c they saw her respond

w/the aide!

suffered hypoxia after the arrest w/her open heart surgery so the

inslut to her brain may have had further affect on her hearing.
