Guest guest
My friend just had a thyroid uptake scan. The scan showed no uptake at all. Her blood work shows a slightly elevated T4 and low level anemia. She has been directed to see an Endo (Oh joy) because her PCP cannot distinguish what is going on. Listening to her, she has Hypo symptoms all over the place. She is female, 53 YO, polish with 4 daughters, g-bladder removed 25 years ago but no other surgeries. Can anyone suggest what's possibly happening here? Thanks. R.
Guest guest
In order to make an informed suggestion we will need a few details. What if any labs were done and their results. What symptoms is she having? Robin - In The_Thyroid_Support_Group , " rrolwing60453 " wrote: > > My friend just had a thyroid uptake scan. The scan showed no uptake at > all. Guest guest
1. Symptoms are all the usual Hypo symptoms. Most on this site know them all. Her's are no different. 2. Labs were as I described - low red count, slightly elevated hematocrit, T4 elevated, cholesterol elevated. TSH 1.4, not that it is a great read of much. The issue is the scan - why would it read like that? She shows no signs of Hyper - only Hypo. Does that help? R. > > > > My friend just had a thyroid uptake scan. Guest guest
A " hyper " person would have a high uptake scan. She needs to make sure they did a four-hour AND a 24-hour scan. Most times, the 4-hour scan will show " normal " or " within range " and won't show extreme uptake until the 24 hour scan. It is very important to have BOTH scans done. The second scan also determines how much radioactive iodine should be given, should she need RAI treatment. BUT, if she if HYPOthyroid, RAI is not the way to go. A person can be HYPER with HYPO symptoms. That's one reason why it took my doctors three years to correctly diagnose me. If she can't be her own advocate, then she's got a good friend in you. Stay by her side and support her. You're a great friend. Dorothy --- rrolwing60453 rrolwing60453@...> wrote: > My friend just had a thyroid uptake scan. The scan > showed no uptake at > all. Guest guest
Her blood work shows a slightly elevated T4 Unfortunately this only really indicates she needs more testing. a total T4 can be elevated becasue of Estrogen, meaning she is somewhere during her cycle..or her hormone levels are flucuating due to menopause or she has a fatty liver( estrogen and T4 compete for receptor sites in the liver) or she could be hyper..or she could be hypo and have a conversion issue which at this stage of the game and elevated T4 Selenium would be the best option. What she needs is a Free T4 test run to eliminate hormones..and she needs a free T3 test run to determine if she is converting.. if T3 is also high then she is hyper and I would not recommend Selenium as she needs no help in conversion.. Hypo and hyper sometimes do cross symptoms, and it is possible to swing from one to the other, especially during the early stages of the disease..
