National EMS Education Standards Communiqué #7

On behalf of the National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE), the National

EMS Education Standards Development Team is pleased to present the first drafts

of the National EMS Education Standards (the Standards) for your critical review

and comment. Although NAEMSE is leading this task, the Standards will be a

product of the national EMS community.

The effort, funded by a cooperative agreement among NAEMSE, the National Highway

Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the Health Resources and Services

Administration (HRSA), represents the next step in implementing the EMS

Education Agenda for the Future: A Systems Approach.

The first-draft Standards serve as a starting point for dialogue with the

national EMS community.  Please review the material and share your comments,

suggestions, and observations with the project team so we can further refine and

improve the documents.  Please be as clear and specific as possible when

articulating your feedback.  The final National EMS Education Standards will be

most successful when they reflect the broadest possible consensus of the EMS

community.

The Standards for all four levels of EMS personnel -- Emergency Medical

Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced EMT (AEMT), and

Paramedic – are available.  To view and download drafts and instructions on

how to submit your comments, please visit the project website.  Please note

that this website has changed due to technical difficulty.  The correct website

is now www.nemsed.org.

The Project Team also developed Instructional Guidelines to aid instructors, EMS

education programs, and publishers.  The Instructional Guidelines for the EMT

and Paramedic levels are also available for your review.  The project team is

still developing the Instructional Guidelines for EMR and AEMT, and they will be

available soon.  To learn more about Instructional Guidelines, please click

here.

All review comments will be submitted to the Project Team and considered for

incorporation into the drafts.  We will accept comments on the first drafts

until July 31, 2007.

The Project Team will:

·         Continue to revise and update future drafts of all the

Standards

·         Depend on your continued feedback on subsequent drafts

·         Present final drafts of the Standards to the national EMS

community at a National EMS Stakeholder meeting in February 2008.

The final National EMS Education Standards will be submitted to NHTSA in

September 2008.
