I highly disagree Wes. There have been a couple of places I would have been

long term had they paid better. The working conditions were good, the managers

were supportive, the CE's excellent. Yet the pay was so bad that I wasn't able

to support my family.

[EMS-L] Discussion question : EMS retention

I've got a hypothesis I'd like to propose for discussion.

I believe that it's working conditions/environment, NOT salary/wages, that drive

people from EMS. I believe that we know the payscale when we accept the job.

We don't leave because of that. Rather we leave because of poor management, poor

working conditions, etc.

And I also believe that, despite protests to the contrary, management finds it

easier to raise wages than to actually improve working conditions. It's easier

to find money for raises than it is to change mindsets or working conditions.

Discuss.

I would agree with that hypothesis. We in EMS haven't really figured

out a good way to grow our own managers and you see alot of people

moving around to escape a supervisor. As for poor working conditions,

compared to most jobs even ideal EMS working conditions are poor. Lack

of career paths off of the street are going to cause people to leave for

more stable conditions in other industries.

I think you are right there as well. The problem with that philosophy

is that money does not motivate people to improve their performance.

Money will keep them at work and motivate minimal performance but thats

about it.

I dont want to necessarily link the two together but as we have been

seeing posts on why employees leave companies and why; we now see two

posts from guardian asking for employees for two different

locations... one new one old.

I ask does this seem to be a prime example... on one hand expanding so

quickly with the goal of covering as much territory as possible and

generating the most income while at the same time neglecting its

existing employees to the point that the company seems to be bleeding

employees and so many (and I have spoken with many ex employees over

the past year)say they wouldn't go back because of the low pay and

poor employee treatment. Many list never ending shifts with no down

time allowed and are threatened with dismissal for complaining, or

even for asking for working equipment.

Is this a company who has lost sight of its duty to patients and

employees simply for the sake of money.

I personally dont have a problem with guardian, never worked for them.

But if these are the complaints from quite a few ex employees.. do

they honestly think they will attract or retain people. If they see so

many leaving have they tried to change? If so how... Is it working? It

doesnt appear so but again I am not there day to day...
