Guest guest
Hi, everyone- We've been to the ENT after wearing the softband BAHA for a month or 2 on a loaner basis. One of her regular aids broke about a week before the BAHA arrived. She has always preferred the BAHA but I wasn't sure if it was just in comparison to a week of nothing. Well, the repaired aid arrived the other day. When I put it on her, she wanted it right off. I made her wear it a half an hour just to see - and she was still hating it and absolutely preferring the BAHA. We've scheduled surgery for Oct. 17th. The dr will pull back her eardrum and take a peek at the inner ear bones. If there is anything he can do to repair or reconstruct things, he will. Depending on what he finds and what he can fix, he will also implant the BAHA screw. Then we'll either let the skin heal over and keep the screw there for when and if we need it or we'll heal it ready to use right away. If, by some miracle, he thinks there's a chance he has repaired her inner ear to perfect, maybe he won't place the screw. So we're pretty excited about the possibilities even though we know it's a slim chance that she'd have perfect hearing. But right now, her bad ear is so very bad. If it could be brought up to something closer to her good ear, she may be able to localize sound and stuff. Wow. That could change her life. This entire hospital is so nice! The ENT, audiology, and speech depts are wonderful. But even the pre-op admissions folks were awesome. They asked Aubrie all the questions and let her be in charge of everything - til she was tired and I took over. When she was asking lots of questions, they offered to take us on a tour of the same day surgery dept. That helped a lot to alleviate her concerns. Guest guest
, It sounds like Tag could use the help Aubrie is getting. It's nice you have such great professionals to work with. I hope Aubrie's surgery goes well. That would be neat if they can fix her ear's and not need the BAHA. It gives me some hope!! Guest guest
Michele, this is interesting!! I will be anxious to hear how it all goes. I love that Aubrie was asking questions--she is such a good avocate for what she needs!! pam Aubrie's ears Hi, everyone- We've been to the ENT after wearing the softband BAHA for a month or 2 on a loaner basis. Guest guest
Abbey- It all came about from conversations on the list, meeting other kids with CHARGE at conferences, asking questions, and changing to leading center in our state for BAHA and CI (according to the recommendations of our DB specialist). Guest guest
Michele, That is wonderful news! just came to visit at school and she said I should really push for her to go to Carle for an eval since she did so well with testing in the booth with the bone conducted aid in IA. She said that even though the teachers are thinking she is hearing better lately, she could tell that really needs the sign and doesn't hear as well as they think she does with her aids on. I think I recall you saying Aubries speech was better with the BAHA. That is one reason I think this would be good for . I can't understand most of what she says right now. I will be praying for a speedy recoverery and great results from surgery. Guest guest
- Do it. is right. Our local folks never really understood the reality of hearing impairment. Since Aubrie " did ok " on the days her FM or aid weren't working, they thought she didn't really need them. Hello? We made progress on that idea over the years, but I think most of them still don't truly get it. The doctors and audiologists at Carle are awesome. We talked with the SLP there too once when we were considering cued speech. She also was great. Dr Novak was the first dr who recognized that Aubrie's hearing fluctuated on a daily basis and was determined to figure it out and get her hearing optimal. I think SLCH and our local audiologist would've been content with things just as they were - cuz they were " good enough " . I know it's a long drive, but it's really worth it. Our next visits are Oct 17 for surgery and post op at 3:15 on Oct 23. Maybe we could have back-to-back appt times? Zander is our audiologist. She's lovely and would do what she can to schedule us if we asked. We've, of course, found the mall and a great gyro shop in Urbana! There's also an amazing costume/magic shop. Great to shop for Halloween if you had an appt before the holiday. Michele W
Guest guest
Michele, how interesting! Great news...Kennedy was the same way - REFUSES to wear the in the ear aids once she tried the BAHA. Very determined on that issue even when BAHA broke, she'd rather be deaf! I'm anxiously awaiting the outcome for Aubrie. Best, > > Michele, > this is interesting!!
