TSH new limits

Hello all,

Still very new to this...so pardon all of the questions.

I was reading that the TSH standard levels have changed so that now

anything above 3.0 is considered high. My question is, do endos accept

this new level system or do they go by the old one? Because when I had

my labs done, my TSH was 3.65 and was not flagged by the lab as being

off.

I made an appt with an endo but I don't know if it's a waste of time.

Thanks again,

Even though the range for TSH was changed in January of 2003, I remember

the date so well cuz we started the group the same month.... many docs

and labs and, more significantly, insurance companies, still use the old

range.

There are some insurance companies, HMOs, whose policy is to NOT treat

until TSH is at 10.0.....

Once on thyroid hormone replacement the value of TSH testing isn't so

great, more important are checking to see what the actual thyroid hormone

levels are.. having a TSH that is in 'normal range' (old one or new one)

means doodly squat if your thyroid hormone levels (Free T4 and Free T3)

are so low that your body is unable to function in a healthy manner...

you'll still be hypo regardless of the TSH level.
