Guest guest
Hi , Our daughter is G-tube fed. She is 13 years old. One day when she was little, I went to feed Abby and her tube filled with blood. I called her surgeon who had placed her G-tube. Unfortunately he was out of town but his nurse practitioner who we loved to death helped us out. She told me to lay Abby on my lap stomach facing the floor and let the blood drain out of her tube into a container so I could measure the volume of blood. It was a lot. We had to go immediately to her GI doctor at s Hopkins who was prepared to operate but knowing her ENT was out of town she didn't want to go into the OR unless it was absolutely necessary. She did blood work and decided that even though it appeared to be a notable amount of blood in her stomach her blood work indicated that Abby was not anemic and that her blood count seemed okay. Abby did not seem to be in any type of distress either. Instead, her GI doctor believes that Abby's stomach tube actually rubbed an ulceration on the inner lining of her stomach. She gave her medication to heal it and told us to keep checking for fresh blood. The ulceration healed within a day or two, I think the size of her tube was changed and Abby never had another problem. Not sure if this helped at all but thought I would share. Measuring the blood coming out of her tube was something I will never forget. It was horrible. Guest guest
Hi all, Felix has been having some " fresh " blood coming out of his G-Tube which is vented to gravity. He has a G-J tube with everything (food and meds) going through the J only. As mentioned the G-tube is kept vented to help prevent his reflux. Our GI doctor is having a hard time figuring out what is causing this. He has been on a high dose of Protonix since birth which keeps his stomach pH at 5+ (checked daily). She added Zantac to see if that would help with the bleeding and it seemed to get rid of the fresh blood - but we would occasionally see old blood coming out - but now the fresh blood is back. She even changed his formula from Enfamil to Neocate thinking it might be a food allergy. Has anyone else experienced this and/or had treatments that worked? Thanks for your help! Guest guest
Dear , I am sorry to hear about the blood in the tube. Our daughter had a similar thing happen when she was about 4 months old. From that time on, she could only tolerate Pregestimil. It is 'pre-digested' and worked for her right away. She stayed on the formula for more than a year when she transitioned slowly to blended baby food or blended table food in the g-tube. While she had a j-tube for a very short time, she did not come home from the hospital with it. So, if there is some additional factor in your case related to the G-J tube, I'm sorry I would 't have information about that. Originally when Kendra changed to the Pregestimil, we had to have her on only Pedialyte for a day or two until the bleeding stopped. Then we gradually diluted the Pedialyte with the Pregestimil until she was up to full strength. We never saw the bleeding again after we transitioned to Pregestimil. She was not able to tolerate breast milk, baby formula, soy, Pediasure or Ensure. If this happened now, I might consider discussing the use of probiotics with the doctor to see if they might help at all. Our daughter now takes them regularly. Our thought was that perhaps the use of the strong (life-saving) antibiotics contributed to the inability to process the other formulas and breast milk. Sometimes probiotics can help in such cases. Best of luck to you!!! Please let us know how Felix is doing. I hope you see improvements soon. Guest guest
Hi, my name is and I have a 21 month old charger. one time my daughter had blood coming out of her gtube and was throwing up blood. They ignored in emerg and I kept on persisting and then finally they did a stomack exray and saw she had a bleeding ulcer. They had to draw all the blood out with a large syringe. They kept on pulling blood out then putting water in the pulling it out and they kept doing that until the water they kept pulling out came clear. That told them the ulcer stopped bleeding. All I know is red blood means it's still bleading and it should be looked at. Dark blood is good because it means its old blood. If you can, I I would maybe recommend that they do a stomack extray to see if they can see anything. They would see an ulcer. Alissa's tummy was full of blood. I hope this helps. > > Hi all, > > Felix has been having some " fresh " blood coming out of his G-Tube > which is vented to gravity. Guest guest
will be 4 next month and every now and then some dark dried blood will come out of her tubing when we are feeding her. I usually try to get it out so it doesn't go back into her stomach. She had an endoscopy in the fall and it showed that she had some ulcers that had healed at some point. She also had some sort of internal irritation but they could never figure out what it was or what might have caused it. I was told that some of the dried blood might simply be from irritation from the Gtube. Luckily we have never had a big problem with it. Guest guest
Hey - Sorry to hear of Felix's new trouble. Unfortunately I don't have any suggestions. I wanted to ask how you check the pH of his stomach? Thanks, Janay Rasha's Mom > > Hi all, > > Felix has been having some " fresh " blood coming out of his G-Tube > which is vented to gravity. Guest guest
Hi Janay, We have pH paper (supplied by Apria Healthcare our medical supplier) and we just open up his G-tube port (there is always some liquid draining from it) and stick the pH paper into the liquid. The paper turns a color and you match it against the scale on the paper's container to tell what the pH is. Your GI doctor could probably get you a kit to start with. Our GI doctor has us monitor it so that if the pH drops below 4, we call her and she can consider tweaking his reflux meds. Hope this helps! > > > > Hi all, > > > > Felix has been having some " fresh " blood coming out of his G-Tube > > which is vented to gravity. Guest guest
THanks , it helps a lot. I will ask her GI at the next appt. I couldn't believe there was no way to tell what's going on unless he didn't feel this would help her...I'm certainly going to ask him! How's Felix doing? Any new ideas on the blood? Guest guest
The only thing my son has had with his Mickey Button is a little blood from when the hole had to be re-opened. After that he had a little blood coming out. It stopped after I put water in his balloon that holds it in. kzkoehler wrote: Hi all, Felix has been having some " fresh " blood coming out of his G-Tube which is vented to gravity.
