Well, I've told about my Mom, but one of her things was that she would eat

what she wanted and said " Oh, I'll just take an extra pill. " I don't remember

what she was on back then. But, years of doing that and her eyes suffered.

She had to have laser surgery. She could see to get around inside of the house,

but had to be led around otherwise. She didn't take care of herself and

then her kidneys went. She was on dialysis for 3 1/2 years. Now, during that

time, she lost her excess weight and the type II diabetes went away. But, there

was so much damage to her body, including her arteries and heart. She died

as a result of coronary artery disease. Quite suddenly too.

My cousin (adopted) has gone blind, has had both legs amputated all

compiments of diabetes. His vision comes and goes.

Now, we just had a family reunion--1st ever on Mom's side. Anyway, Mom's

younger sister did the right thing when she was diagnosed with type II about 15

years ago. She lost her excess weight and her diabetes. Yet, although she is

thin now and doesn't have type II, she still considers herself diabetic.

We were sitting next to each other at the reunion when a cousin's wife

brought around brownies. I took one. I figured, my blood sugar had been so

good

and I'd been so good, what was one lousy brownie. I was biting into it when

my little bitty aunt said " No thank you, I'm diabetic. " What? Talk about

feeling like an idiot!!!!

The thing for me that makes me stay on track better is what it did to my

mother's and sister's and cousin's eyes. I was born with a cataract in one eye.

The lens was removed as a toddler and they didn't do lens implants in kids

back in the 1970s. So, the optic nerve never developed right in that eye.

Even

if they did a lens implant now, it wouldn't do much good because of that. I

have 20/20 in my good eye. But, that's the thing, my vision has always been

the most precious thing to me. So, with only having one eye to see with, I am

determined to take care of it!

So, anyone want to talk A1C? The good, the bad, and the ugly?

My A1C was 11-something back in 98.

I was probably a diabetic for two years before I was diagnosed. In

98 I had a urine test that was 1000, I have no idea what test that

was. I do remember in those days if was feeling weak and shaky, I

would eat a snicker bar. (Can you imagine eating candy when my sugar

was already high??)

Once in 99, I had McDonlads for lunch and supper, super sized it with

a regular coke and my vision went very very blurry two hours later as

I was driving down the road. Stayed blurry for 8 hours or so. It was

scary.

I would like to hear some amazing horror stories to help remind all

of us what can happen if we just " give up " the good fight.

I know a lady who drank a gallon of orange juice because she was

weak and shaky. She said she was incredibly thirsty. She went biind

for a week or so, cant remember how long, maybe 30 days? Her blood

sugar was above 500. Absolutely true story.

Thank you for posting. I --REALLY-- need to hear these things.

I am one of those ppl who requires having the snicker bar slapped right

out of my hand!

I go to the local IHS (Indian Health Service), and let me tell you

folks something. This disease can kick some royal butt if left

uncontrolled! I am blessed to have found this group. It is really

affecting my self discipline.

I know it is a creepy topic, but some of us NEED to hear/read blunt

honest truths.

Redbird,

I could drink orange juice like that -- I love the stuff, especially

Tropicana Grovestand with lots of pulp. I sometimes get mild blurry vision, but

I've never had any blindness. I don't buy any juices anymore, and I have to be

real careful with fruit -- peaches and nectarines are in season, but I don't

handle them that well. I do better with blueberries and strawberries.

As a younster, I probably could have drank orange juice like that. But,

nowadays, with my IBS, I can have very little fruit juice before I get the

screaming kaka's.

I love most fruits, but nectarines, plums, pears, peaches, watermelon,

cantaloupe, and berries are my favorites, particularly blueberries. I love

sweet strawberries, but they have to be good and ripe to be sweet. I also love

grapes, but they are little sugar beads practically!

Yes, it's always a blessing when people can overcome their addictions.

I wish people on this group would stop talking about T2s who don't lose

their excess weight like they just don't care about their health. It's

insulting to those who try to beat their addiction and don't succeed or

didn't succeed yet.

This self-righteous talk about T2s who " just have to lose this excess

weight " and if they don't manage to lose this weight they " just don't

care and are irrepsonsible " is unbearable.

It's especially unbearable when coming from T2s who stuffed themselves

with junk food until they developed diabetes and managed to lose a bit

of weight and now think they're better human beings than overweight

diabetics who try to lose weight and fail. Think again. You're not.

It's obnoxious.

M.
