Guest guest
I think one of my biggest issues with trying to eat right is snacking. Yeah, I like to eat, but there doesn't really seem to be any good diabetic snacks out there. I've done the jello, and the cottage cheese, and I love peanut butter and crackers, even if I am limited to just six, but all of this gets really old. I love chips and salsa. I've found some tortilla chips that are lower in carbs then most, and some salsa that is lower in sugar then most, but I still feel like I should stay away from it. Not to mention that I don't know when to quit once I get started. I started on raw vegetables like carrots and colliflower with veggie dip. I enjoyed it until I looked at the cholesterol count in the dip, which is something else that I have to watch, so I've given that up too. AAAAAAnyway, I'd like to hear a few suggestions on snacking if anyone has any. I'm sure I'm not the only one in this dilemma.
Guest guest
I know what you mean! I am a big snacker too. I love potato chips. I have started planning my snacks like I do my meals. I can have 1oz of potato chips. I eat a lot of dill pickles. Mr. Salty makes a pretzel and cheese snack pack. I do the no sugar added pudding and jello. I switch these things around so none of them get boring. I found fudge drop cookies that only have 19 carbs for a serving of 4. I also found a choc. cookie with a little bit of marshmello cream that is under 19 carbs for 1. By planning ahead I can stay on my food plan. in Ohio Steve sbr@...> wrote: I think one of my biggest issues with trying to eat right is snacking. --------------------------------- Talk is cheap. Guest guest
I've taken to eating sunflower seeds when I'm feeling munchy. I'm not sure the brand I eat would be readily available anywhere else, as it's produced locally, but I don't think the nutrition facts could vary much with other brands. For salted, a half cup serving has 170 calories, 9g of fat (1g saturated, 0g trans), 0 cholesterol, 390 mg sodium (eek! lol), 16 g carbs, but only 2 net (14 g fibre, 1 g sugar), and 6 g protein. They also provide 4% of the RDA of calcium and 8% of the RDA of iron. I also saw something the other day about sunflower seeds being a libido booster Oh, and I am referring to raw seeds, not raosted or otherwise cooked This is the brand I eat: http://www.spitzseeds.com/ The site says they distribute in the US, too. Guest guest
Jerky is any type of meat that has been slowly dehydrated over low heat. It will keep for a fairly long time without refrigeration. It was used by Native Americans as a way to save food during the abundant(summer) time for lean times(winter). Bob Sears
Guest guest
Those " 100-calorie " packs of various types of goodies are usually in line with the numbers conducive to " safe " snacking. I really love the Cheetos baked crunchy ones - plus the SunChips. Since I have to watch calories on top of everything else, these give me the satisfaction of having something munchy & crunchy without overdoing it. Now, if I could just figure out how to work a cherry pie into things - lol! Guest guest
: When I was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic in 1968 my doctors recommended I rarely eat french fries or potato chips. If you are a cost conscious consumer check the price on a five pound bag of potatos. Then check the price on a regular order of fries or a single serving of potato chips. The cost premium paid on fries and chips is enormous. Started using Extend Bars. They don't elevate my sugars and prevent lows. Guest guest
I stuff celery with cream cheese and sprinkle with seasoned salt. Lots of crunch for the carbs... I have heard of people using peanut butter (w/out the seasoned salt!) but I think it has more fat/carbs than the cream cheese does. Jerky (can be any type of meat). could be pricy if purchased but I make my own; that way I can limit the MSG too. easy to make even w/out a dehydrator as you can use a regular stove. As I grow my own meat (I know, not an option for many of us!) I also know that it doesn't contain any chemicals or hormones so I consider it a dietary " freeby " . Lots of chewing and hand-mouth movement so satisfying for those who eat emotionally as well. Guest guest
I would love to know how to make jerky without a dehydrator! Do you put it in the oven a low temp for a long period of time? Guest guest
I used to cut potatoes very thin and bake them in the oven. Worked beautifully to make potato chips salted if wanted. I'm scared to try them again after reading that potatoes spike some people as well as worrying that once I eat them I won't stop (calories count - I'm loosing weight again yippee) JUDITH san: When I was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic in 1968 my doctors recommended I rarely eat french fries or potato chips. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Guest guest
I snack non=stop! We buy cases of V8 from Sam's club. They are real small cans (4 oz?) so I don't get grossed out. If I slam two cans, it reduces my cravings for junk food. Second, if I can't stop snacking, the cure is either !get out of the house! or make a meal. FOr some reason, I enjoy making a good supper. And for some odd reason when I know the meal is cooking (e.g. meat that takes 2-3 hours, I don't want to snack. Weird, I know. I guess that makes me not want to " ruin my supper " . Otherwise, like yesterday, I will snack non-stop. > > I think one of my biggest issues with trying to eat right is snacking. > Yeah, I like to eat,
Guest guest
I keep the low sodium V8 on hand. I found out that if you keep it really cold and pour it over crushed ice it doesn't taste as gross. > > > > I think one of my biggest issues with trying to eat right is > snacking. > > Yeah, I like to eat, >
Guest guest
Eunice, You're not the only person that needs to get things done but this group is so supportive and it puts me in a good mood. Guest guest
--- I haven't drank any V8 in a long time, but I used to put a little black pepper in it. When you get down to it, you're drinking liquid vegetables, may as well season it like vegetables. In diabetes , " Marie " wrote: > > I keep the low sodium V8 on hand. Guest guest
If you mix the low sodium V-8 half and half with spicy hot and add a teaspoon of Braggs organic apple cider vinegar it is really tasty, and has not quite so much salt. The Apple cider vinegar is really good for a host of things. If you don't believe that, it at least won't hurt you. Guest guest
I will eat a pickle slice with cream cheese on it, I will heat some pepperoni slices in the microwave, I will eat half an apple dipped in cream cheese, an ounce of almonds (about 20), or 30 pistachios, I take a slice of american cheese and quarter it and put on parchment paper and microwave it and it tastes like cheese nips. When I want the sweet stuff I take some cream cheese put it in a mug with a little bit of cream and vanilla extract and splenda and microwave it and it tastes like a cheese cake, sugarfree pudding with sugarfree whip cream in the can. Hope this helps. sharon
