Guest guest
Hello all! New here & needing some advice. Radical masectomy performed, facing chemo, worried about the 'little stuff'. Single mother on very limited income, Medicaid handling the bulk of the bills, knowing I cannot afford a wig, where do I turn for help? I was told I needed to go ahead & get my rather long hair cut & find me a wig, I can't afford a haircut, much less a wig. Any advice / help would be gratefully appreciated! Thank you! Guest guest
Hi . try an organization called Y-ME, they are located on the web; you can find out all sorts of information and they also have a link to see if there is a local group in your area. I found out information on wigs from my oncologists office so that's a place to check too. I would definitely get your hair cut short prior to it falling out; my experience was that mine came out in clumps which was a hard thing to deal with so I had it cut short immediately. Less stress! Guest guest
Hi Venessa, A wig should be covered - your surgeon or oncologist needs to write you a prescription for a " cranial prostethis " . They may give you names of stores that are covered under Medicaid. Also tlcdirect.org sells wigs & accepts Medicaid. take care, Venessa wrote on 1/22/2007, 1:46 PM: > Hello all! Guest guest
Welcome, Venessa. You have come to a good place to find concern, advice and help. I can relate to your circumstances. I can't tell just where you live, but if you are in the U.S.A., contact the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org, or even better, call them at 1-800-ACS-2345. Explain your concerns, and ask how to contact the ACS office nearest to you. Ask for a Reach to Recovery visit. Someone should come to your home and provide you with loads of information, give you your first prosthesis (bra) and tell you how to visit their office and select one or more free wigs. You can do great things with scarves and other headdresses too, and the R2R visitor might have more information on these. I am an old man who is an 8-year survivor of breast cancer. I am also a certified ACS Reach to Recovery visitor. I hope you will receive from the ACS the kind of caring support that we here in Texas always try to provide. Also try the Komen Foundation. Best wishes to you on this new journey. Stay in touch here, and you will feel much less alone. Lyn > > Hello all! New here & needing some advice. Guest guest
Venessa, Contact the American Cancer Society. You can get wigs from them. If you have any bills that Medicaid doesn't pay talk to the Patient Advocate at your hospital. Sometimes they can write the bill off. I know with our hospital when we have a bill they let us pay $20/mo till its paid off. I will keep you in my prayers. Guest guest
--Venessa, Contact your local American Cancer Society, that is where I got my wig they get donations from other cancer survivors myself included I went out and bought a wig hated it the style was not me and the color made me look gaunt, went to the American Cancer Society office and was shown different wigs and found one that looked great on me, donated my other one to them for someoneelse. I went thru everything you are going throuh except I did have good insurance who paid for alot of my surgeries. I found that I did not wear my wig as much as i thought I would I either wore a baseball cap or a scarf it was too warm for me. Best wishes you sound like a woman with great courage. and my prayers are with you. Guest guest
Hi , First of all, you'll do fine!!! I always say the unknown is the hardest part, once everything starts, your routine will fall into place. As far as cutting your long hair, I wouldn't go that drastic yet. I had long hair and gradually cut it to shoulder length and finally shorter than that. I found after sugery I couldn't use my arm to style my jhair as I wanted anyways. They say you will lose your hair by the 2nd treatment which is pretty much true. Before then, just buzz your head!! The GI Jane look is great.. after that you will lose the rest and maybe keep fuzz. For your information, my insurance covered wigs, I never wore it, I bought hats, what a waste of money! The only thing I myself was comfortable in was bandanas because they could breathe and were much more comfortable on my head. They are cheap as well and come in various colors. You didn't mention how many children you had or how old, but I hope that you either friends or family that will help you out. If not, you will just set up a routine where you will need to rest for 2 days after treatment, but will still be able to manage if you have to. Best of luck and keep in touch!! Guest guest
- The American Cancer Society could probably help you out with a wig if you tell them your situation. They send you $75.00 towards the purchase of a wig. Hopefully you can find one in that range. Mine cost $38.00 with the seventy five from the Cancer society and a 20% discount from the Salon I got it from. I had cheaper ones to choose from - You can cut your own hair - what do you care what the hair cut looks like as long as it is short or get a relative or neighbor to cut it. Mine is not coming out in clumps but everytime I comb it the comb is filled with hair, you can imagine if I would try to brush it! I am trying to hang on as long as I can but my hair is very very short and now very thin. I have my wig on stand by (lol) the American Cancer society can also advise you as to who to contact with help with medical costs. Its all out there. all you have to do is call. Toll free phone number or get on line. Good luck to you. doloresrose.scent-team.com Once you try Mia Bella candles there will be no other! CIAO!
