I have a question on having surgery

I am diabetic and am going to have to have surgery because I also have

diverticulosis and have a fistula. I go to see the surgeon Monday but

I am wondering now if it is more dangerous having surgery if you are

diabetic. I know I will find out Monday but would like to find out

now. I am sure infection would be of great concern.

There is always a risk for anyone having surgery and for a diabetic infection

can occur more easily but I think if you need the surgery you should have it. My

husband gets the bad pain fron diverticulosis so I know it's not fun. Since i

have had diabetes I have had 3 major surgeries and 7 minor ones with no problems

as far as infection and healing goes. My worst surgery was before the diabetes,

high blood pressure and all the other fun stuff. I had a hysterectomy when I was

31 due to cancer snd was back in the hospital after 6 weeks with some kind of

infection (they never really found out what) and that was no picnic.

Have faith in yourdoctor, he'll know what's best.

I had surgery two weeks ago. I had to get medical clearance from my

endo, who basically ran a few blood tests and an ekg. I don't know if

it's standard procedure or not, but they put an antibiotic in my i.v.

They also kept an eye on my blood sugar.

Thanks for your reply. I also take high blood pressure medication and my

cholesterol is high and I am overweight and diabetic. I just got on medication

for diabetes. Obviously I have not been following the rules on what to eat and

not eat!

Even for minor surgeries they run an IV with antibiotics. And blood work is

standard procedure. Also an ekg if over a certain age, can't remeber what that

is. For major surgery they'll do an ekg during surgery too no matter what your

age. And things have improved since I was 31 which was 31 years ago. Sure

doesn't seem that long ag. wow.

Antibiotics are not given for all surgeries, even for diabetics. Only

ones where there is high risk of infection such as intestinal surgery,

joint replacement, and very major procedures are antibiotics used

routinely.

I had a hysterectomy and a hernia repaired and they did pre op blood work

and ekg. and put me on antibiotics (IV) after.. I did have slower healing

he thinks that there will be a big problem--they will take blood work and

check your sugars and BP to make sure that you are stable--Most people i know

have Diabetes like myself have High blood pressure and high cholesterol-- We

nee to take our meds if the doc

has prescribe some and we need to avoid sodium like the plague & of course

sugary foods.. and most likely put you on an antibiotic to help with healing..

i take meds for BP__High CHol & fluid retention and i take insuliin in an

insulin pump for my diabetes-- i am having weight loss surgery in a few months

too--i am morbidly obese and my body just cannot handle it anymore and all

the health issues--i am only 44.. My name is Susie and i live in PA..

just do your best to keep yourself in control and you should have no

problem healing--if your sugars are under control--

i live in northeast PA--in Exeter,PA--it is near Wilkes Barre,PA.. We just

moved here last year--because i could not do steps anymore because of my

neurpathy

so we bought a mobile home.. I need to use a wheel chair most of the

time--but i can still walk--only about 10 feet at a time and i push myself to

keep

on moving even if it is just a little--i do not want to end up losing the

total use of my legs--i am praying that the Weight Loss surgery will help me

dramatically..

Right now i am battling a bone infection in my Big toe and i am going to

the wound care center for treatment--i was in the hospital in May for a week

and i was on home iv antibiotics for 8 weeks and my toe is healing very

slowly--but i might have to go back on antibiotics again since it is getting

red

again.. I feel like a pyrana took a chunk out of my lower part of my toe over

the metatarsal bone.. It is so scary when you come so close to amputation--i

am still not out of the woods yet of that--i just keep on praying and do what

i am told to do by the doctors.. on thurs i have to go for more x-rays to see

how the bone is--if it is not showing any improvement they want to drill

into my metarsal bone and take a culture of it--scary as it sounds--My

neuropathy is bad and my both feet are about 95% numb--I have to look down to

see if

i have shoes on most of the time--i cannot feel them--i have had cellulitis a

number of times and did lose the metarsal bone in my baby toe in 1998..from

a blister that turned to osteomylitis(bone infection)..

Being a diabetic is everything BUT FUN! Everyone take care of yourselfs and

always check your feet and your blood glucose every day--better safe then

sorry!

Susie - I hate that you are having such problems. You are so young. I am 60

yrs. old and feeling really old right now. Just hang in there and get all of

this behind you. I will see the surgeon tomorrow and I will know what they have

planned. About three years I was going to have surgery and they did not want to

do it because of blood pressure. My blood pressure (with meds) is under control

but now I have diabetes and my numbers are high. I take 500mg Metformin 2x

daily. I only started this June 23rd.
