Statement of Why I Wanted To Become A Teacher

Hey guys, I know I'm not in here much lately with the craziness of full time

University; however, I wanted to share my statement about why I wanted to

become a teacher with the list because it involves Kennedy (of course!).

We had to do this as part of developing our teaching portfolio...

I could not begin to construct a statement of why I decided to become a

teacher without mentioning my daughter, Kennedy. She has been the impetus

for all that I have envisioned, worked for, and accomplished since her birth

in 1998. She has taught me more about myself than I ever would have known

had she not been born. She will be always be my greatest accomplishment.

Kennedy was born with CHARGE syndrome, a genetic disorder involving many

systems of the body and including multiple sensory losses in most cases. It

was in learning about her and how to teach her, that I realized what it was

that I should be doing in life. It was in meeting, observing, and learning

from the incredible professionals who helped contribute to her many

successes, that my focus was narrowed to becoming a teacher for students who

are deaf or hard of hearing, deafblind, or have multiple needs. I also knew

personally the need for more professionals in this field. That knowledge,

along with the inspiration of seeing those professionals work with my own

child, ignited in me a passion for children who are often underestimated by

other adults in their lives and by society in general.

My personal learning style involves gathering as much knowledge from as many

reliable sources as possible about a particular subject and applying that

knowledge to the specific goals I have, especially if the subject is

unfamiliar or challenging. I believe this will serve me well, as I will be

working with students who will have a myriad of conditions and learning

needs. They will need someone who will diligently research, collaborate with

more experienced others, and attempt to discover the best methods to work

with them. I am not afraid to learn new things and welcome the challenges

that are ahead for me. There were many professionals in Kennedy's life who

read her intimidating file and forged on courageously with the belief that

she could. And she did.

They believed. I believe.

Thanks Michele. I couldn't lie and say it was something " I always wanted to

do " , etc as most of them do, I had to give it straight.

And by being straight like that I think it sends a clear message that puts

you not just in the good teacher catagory, but it puts you in the phenomonal

catagory! You rock Lis!

Thanks Chantelle, you were a big part of my inspiration and " believing "

Kennedy could do a lot of things in her life.

Bravo , inspirational stuff! I wonder how many parents career paths have

been redirected dramatically, as a results of our amazing charge children's

births, struggles and achievements!!

Amelie is definitely the reason I am now back at University, especially

after the level of care and support from my midwifery team during the

initial shock.

Empowerment and strength to make a difference in peoples lives will be

satisfying to most of us.

Well done, hope you get all you wish for with your career ahead, you deserve

it.

I think being honest is always best. BSing may get you into school, but it

won't keep you interested in your work.

I decided to go to optometry school because basically I was graduating from

college and had no idea what I was going to " do " for the rest of my life.

Optometry seemed as good of choice as anything, and if I was accepted...well

then it must have been a sign. I spend 4 years of graduate school, a year of

residency, and a year working not really sure if this was my calling and what I

was meant to do.

And then I had Evan. He truly has changed my perspective on life and what is

important. Because of him, I am involved with the Parent-2-Parent group and the

March of Dimes. Because I'm involved in these groups, I get referrals and

recommendations of special needs kids and more kids in general into the

practice. I've realized that it is much more satisfying to work with this

segment of the population. It wasn't until this last year that I really felt

like I had found the passion in my work. I guess it was there all along...I

just didn't realize it.

, your career path is really fantastic. I have always said that you and

Graeme should move to California. We could really benefit by the blueberry

fields and by your commitment to education for kids with special needs.

This was a really nice essay!

And Les, you, too, are making an amazing commitment!! As you mentioned

earlier, there is a difference between home births and mid-wife assisted

births between the US and the UK. It seems the US is moving further away

from the mid-wife direction, but evidence is strong that there are definite

benefits in many cases to this kind of birthing experience.

Well said , its a scary thought regarding instrumental forceps/ ventous

deliveries, we in the UK are going back full circle, pregnancy is not an

illness its a natural process, and until a woman presents with deviations

from the norm, then why intervene, America has an amazing midwife called

Peggy 'the baby catcher' who's is so passionate about this and

someone I aspire to. I sincerely hope women in America get back on track for

vaginal delivery and avoid all the medical disasters that go with

C-section, I suffered a Pulmonary Embolism after Amelies birth due to a

c-section, I don't think women take seriously the post op recovery and

situations which evolve through messing with nature, (not emergency

sections) but those elective types, too posh to push!!!! we have lots of

celebrities in the UK who choose private c sections to fit in with star

celebrities commitments!!!

A focused and determined student midwife in the making, just 3 years to go

until I qualify!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
