Guest guest
I am newly diagnosed and so far, I haven't had any real noticeable reaction to Metformin. I take 1000 mg twice a day. There is one thing that I have noticed -- my mood is better and I am feeling less anxiety and " antsy-ness " since I started taking it. I'm not sure why but I am not complaining!! . We have been going thought a terrible heat wave so I can't tell if the sweating is from a reaction or the heat - lol! I am anxious to read this thread concerning Metformin. I have read a lot about it and am really watching for signs but so far so good. ~~ Barb " Jesus took my place on the cross to give me a place in heaven. Guest guest
Some of you have mentioned the side effects of Metformin. The Dr increased my MIL's dose and she claims that the increase is causing a tightness in her chest and pains in her stomach. Have any of you had this problem with it? He checked her out and has decreased it again but back to the level that her sugar was high at. Thank you. Phyllis
Guest guest
I have had problems with stomach distress with metformin/Glucophage since I started it in 1995. I had to cut 500 mg tablet in half to start it. After 3 weeks I went to a full 500 mg tablet. Then each month after that I increased the dose by a 500 mg tablet until I reached 2000 mg a day. The whole time I had loose bowels and gas and rumbling in the stomach. At times real pain from the gas. I still have problems and I have reduced the dose to 500 mg a day. It does help a lot with the insulin resistance I have. S Wilkinson, Rome, New York Metformin Some of you have mentioned the side effects of Metformin. Guest guest
Hi Phyllis - I went on Metform, 500mg, 1x day for about 25 days. I had such abdominal pain that my doc thought I had gall stones. I went off it and about a week later, the pain subsided. I tried 3 different times to tolerate it but just could not. I have recently ordered the Metformin XR (extended release) which is supposed to be a little easier on the tummy. I haven't tried it yet. Guest guest
, yes, I had all those same problems: belching, gas, the stomach pain but the worst was the diarrhea. It was so bad I could not leave the house for a couple of hours in the mornings and then had to plan my route knowing where all the bathrooms in town were. LOL. I sure hope the extended release ones are better. Carole Metformin > > > Some of you have mentioned the side effects of Metformin. Guest guest
Thank you Carole, I hope the XR works much better for you. She tolerates the 500 three times a day with no problems, but 850 three times a day aparently was too much. If he has to increase it again, I will tell her to ask the Dr about the XR. Guest guest
Hi, metformin users--I started taking it (a generic) in Feb. because glyburide was giving me hypos every day & I didn't want to go back to being a constant snacker! I take a 500mg tablet with breakfast & dinner. My a1c in June was 6.6, but I think I was still getting over knee surgery & a few steroid injections. My average is lower now. I've had " loose bowels " every morning since I started taking metformin, but not really diarrhea. I've gotten used to it & it's not interfering with my life...but I'm retired & have no place I have to be. When I was teaching high school it would've been impossible!
