What time do you have dinner Judy and do you feel hungry at nite?

I eat dinner about 6:30 and find I am hungry by nine and will have an apple or some popcorn...

Do you not have anything after dinner?

Sue

I guess it depends on how hungry you are and what you eat. When I was having sugary evening snacks, I had night sweats all night, then I switched the snack to a more healthy one and woke up, but without the sweats, now I'm not eating after dinner and sleeping like a baby... Judy

At the sleep lab, the guy told me that snacks before bed help people sleep. He never told me what the mechanisim is.

When I was still 'in the sugar', I had to eat about every two hours and I was hungry most of the time. My blood sugar would drop and I would have to eat way too much to stay stable. After I cut out the sugars and simple white stuff, I got down to 3 meals and 2 snacks, all with protein in them to get me through the day. I still have potatoes and whole grain rice, pasta, oatmeal etc., but none of the white flour ones.

After a month or so, the hypoglycemia started to get better, and I found that I wasn't needing the afternoon snack, and then last week, I didn't need the evening one either. I'm making sure to get enough lean protein at each meal to carry my through to the next. Popcorn is out of the question for me and if I had an apple, it would have to have a slice of cheese with it. Protein is the key for me to stave off premature hunger.

Now, I have breakfast about 9:30 AM, lunch about 2 PM and dinner around 6:30 PM. I go to bed around 10:30. If I go any later, I will get hungry again. I had plateaued at 195 and I needed to do something. Cutting out the afternoon snack got me down to 190 and the evening snack has things rolling again.

I won't go to bed hungry, I draw the line at that, but I haven't been hungry at all and the inner voices are quiet LOL.

Hi Judy,

Wow, awesome for you how it’s working.

Did you have a “sugar crash” at all?

There are times when I crave sugar and salt – once a month and can’t seem to get past it...

Why is popcorn out of the question for you? Cuz of the no protein, all carbs aspect of it?

I also crave CARBS – what the heck does THAT mean?

I have breakfast at 8:30 – I get up at 7 am. I have snack of apple and or yogurt at 10 and lunch around noon, dinner at 6:30 with a snack at 4 pm.

By 10 I am starving — I go to bed about 11...... So I don’t want to eat at 10 and I do a snack at 7 to 8; usually popcorn.

Any suggestions?

Thanks :)

Sue

Things I forgot to mention Judy:

I DON’T EAT:

Cookies

Cake

Chips

Ice cream

Or any high fat foods.

I do eat:

Fish

Low fat yogurt

Pastas

Turkey

Cheese

Nuts

Cereal

Do I need to look for “sugar” in all foods or do you mean you cut out the OBVIOUS sugar foods?

Thanks!

sue

Hey Sue. I still have sugar in a few things like ketchup, milk, cranberry sauce etc., but I do not buy ones with high fructose corn syrup. I could relate that totally to many cravings, so it had to go. You know, the one that turns off the part of your brain that signals fullness. I had to read labels for a bit, and buy things at a whole food store to get rid of that one ingredient, but it was worth it. I had to switch breads, condiments etc. because it was in just about everything in the middle aisles of the grocery store. They should just call them the fructose aisled.

So besides the HFCS, when I talk about sugars, I'm talking about desserts, soda, candy bars etc. Just the junk foods. And when I talk about 'white stuff', I mean white bread, plain bagels, white rice, plain pasta and that sort of thing. I buy multigrain pastas and breads, and a long grain brown rice/wild rice combo, and I only have any of those about once a week.

I have a brazil nut each day for selenium just before lunch or dinner. I can't say that it's working or not, but I bought them a while back and just started having them again.

So for today, for example:

Breakfast is always a protein shake with banana, cooked oatmeal, rice protein, cinnamon, cocoa and Almond 'milk'.

Lunch today is chili made with lean ground beef, beans, tomatoes, tomato sauce, onions and mushrooms with a few crackers for starch. Lunch is usually leftover from the night before or healthy choice and salad. I used to use Lean Cuisine, but many have the HFCS mentioned above in them, so they've been nixed for now.

Supper today is lean pork chop, potato with a dab of full fat sour cream, and brussel sprouts. Supper, unless it's chili or spaghetti, is generally one lean meat, one starch, and one veggie.

If I need more at lunch or dinner, I add a romaine salad with tomato and a bit of dressing.

Snacks if I need them will be peanut butter with celery, Kashi Mini-wheats with skim milk, or apple with cheese. I also have stevia whole wheat muffins and I was having 1/2 with fruit, but I haven't done that in a while. Actually, I haven't had any in a while and he last snack I had was 1/2 cup of the Kashi cereal one evening. Yogurt with fruit and nuts is ok too, but doesn't last as long for some reason.

I also buy full fat salad dressings and mayo and mix them 50/50 with plain yogurt so that I don't get all of the chemicals in the light or fat free ones. All of my foods have pronounceable ingredients and I think that makes a difference too.

I did have a big of a sugar crash in the beginning, in that I was still hungry all of the time. I had a couple of headaches too, but I hadn't been back in the sugar for long this last time.

As far as the cravings go, I think they feel themselves. In other words, the more you consume, the more you crave. That is true for me anyway. One is too many, a thousand never enough, type of thing. The easiest way to stop eating sugar is to stop eating sugar. I know it sounds harsh, and I don't mean it that way, but it's been true for me. I am a junk food sugar addict and I really just need to get it out of my system to get rid of the cravings. I'm not craving anything anymore and I just eat when I'm hungry without thinking about it ahead of time. I do write down and commit my food first thing in the morning, so that I'm not doing it when I'm actually hungry.

And as for the popcorn, yes, you've got that right. If I put 1/2 cup of butter on it, I could probably get away with it, but of course that would defeat the purpose LOL. Simple sugars like that will just send me over the edge in an hour or two. In fact, I think popcorn is quite high on the GI list (Glycemic Index), right up there with jelly beans.

I sent my whole plan in reply to your second email, so to be continued... Judy

Hi Judy,

Thanks for the info.

I think the MOST important things are: you are NOT hungry and you are eating WELL.

I eat WELL but am HUNGRY!

I eat about what you do but I do the popcorn thing... When stopped that last year I remember I lost about 8 lbs in 3 weeks and then snuck it back in (yeah, pretty sneaky huh? LOL!) and back came the weight so just said “F” it for then.

I have stopped gaining but now want to lose again.

I do read labels, stay away from most all direct sugars and white foods — how many calories do you think you eat in a day/ I am guessing I do 1300 to 1500 and I do do cardio 5x a week, along with hand weights 3 x a week, crunches daily and yoga a couple times a week.

Are potatoes ok?

Sue

Hmmm, I'm not really sure about the calories. If I had to guess, I would say 1200-1500 depending on whether I need the snacks or not. I think last week it was probably about 1200 and I started losing a bit again. I try not to go any lower than that. Your metabolism will be higher because of the cardio and strenth training. I haven't been doing much, and I suspect that I'll have to add a bit more food when I do, and I'll deal with that then.

One thing I know for sure is that if I eat healthy and exercise and don't overeat, I still won't ever see the inside of a size 12 LOL. I'm aiming for 16 now and that's fine with me. I eat a lot of potatoes, I love them, but I do have a pretty small portion. I'm a combo eater, you know the ones that make mini-caseroles on their fork? LOL. I like the taste of everything together and I like the moisture that the potato adds, so I'm not ready to give them up. I actually when the lower carb route in Texas, when I first started the Armour thing, and I had stopped losing weight. When I added potatoes and healthy grains back in, I started to lose again. I'm a freakin' walkin' mystery LOL and I'm done trying to figure it all out. I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and see where I land.

PS... I'm still taking straight Eltroxin and doing well on that... Judy

Hi andrea,

I don’t take a multi every day but I do take Bs, Cs, Es, fish oil, and a host of other cholesterol-lowering supplements.

I just seem to burn my food an hour after I eat it but I notice it only in HUNGER not in inch or weight loss.
