Guest guest
Hey Y'all, It was very cold the other night, so I heated up a rice pad in the microwave to put on my chest as I went to sleep. I over heated the darn thing, and fell asleep with it on. I have learned that it is best not to do that to numb, irradiated flesh, as I woke up with a pretty large area of second-degree burns. So, what I can feel of it is uncomfortable, and now I am on high lymphedema alert. Learn from my stupidity. If you have a numb area, be very careful with hot pads and ice packs, as you simply can't judge how much is too much. Heavy Sigh, Ruffing Grade 3, Stage IIIA, ER/PR+, HER2 neg, 4.9 cm and 5 nodes positive Chemo and radiation completed 9/28/06 Mastectomy, no reconstruction ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ Bored stiff? Guest guest
nothing like learning by experience!! but what a way to learn *that* particular lesson... (btw, why do you do that? does it help with healing?? just wondering - I had a lumpectomy, not a mastectomy...) marisa > > Hey Y'all, > > It was very cold the other night, so I heated up a rice pad in the microwave to put on my chest as > I went to sleep. Guest guest
You might want to get in touch with a doctor - ER or urgent care or whatever and get put on antibiotics - I know that is suggested if we suffer any injury to our lymphadema prone arm. Guest guest
Marisa, I did it because I was cold. Without boobage on my right side, my chest gets cold. Plus, I put a vanilla bean in the rice bag, and it smells so good when it is warm. If you want to make a cheap, easy rice bag: take an old tube sock, fill it with rice, knot the top. Heat in the microwave for two minutes, or thereabouts. Place around your neck, or anyplace that is not irradiated and numb. You can put them in the freezer for a cold pack, put place it in a plastic bag first, as the rice will absorb moisture in the freezer. Or so they tell me. Guest guest
Gail, Luckily, the very next day I had a scheduled follow up with my surgeon. She doctored me up, and asked me to please not do that again. I am buying antibiotic ointment in the economy size. Guest guest
You are not the only one to have burned herself w/ a rice bag. I did the same thing the end of December. Fortunately, I had just one small blister which healed before I had to go back to the doctor, so I didn't have to tell him what I did. I didn't realize my chest was so numb. > > > > Hey Y'all, > > > > It was very cold the other night, so I heated up a rice pad in the > microwave to put on my chest as > > I went to sleep.
