Hi,

My son wasn't born without a thymus but had both lobes removed during heart

surgery when he was 3.5yrs old. The only reason I know this is because I read

his hospital notes. No-one ever told us. This is failrly common practice in

complex heart surgery in children. The thymus is quite large in babies and

children but gradually shrinks as we get older.

It hasn't caused Jack any problems as far as I can tell. He seems to have a

pretty good immune system and is very rarely ill.

i lurk more than post, but i saw a post about the thymus gland, my son

doesn't have a thymus gland, and tested negative for the digeorge

mutation, so none of his docs seemed to concerned with his lack of a

thymus gland. anybody else not have a thymus? if so, did they do

something for it? it is always in the back of my mind, but i asked

all his docs, and they aren't concerned, should they be? thanks!

by the way, my son is 3 and doing great, he goes to deaf ed school,

and is doing amazing, he is even talking around the trach, and his

signing is taking off. he's been potty trained since september,

except for overnight,b/c of his nightdrip. he does something new

everyday! i just want to say thanks for all of the great advice you

guys have shared over the years, you all have helped me more than you

know.

thanks
