Guest guest Posted March 4, 2007 Report Share Posted March 4, 2007 : We've had 8 different case conferences - so far - this year and haven't even addressed the IEP. This has all been leading up to developing the IEP for next year. Meanwhile, has gotten more and more frustrated academically. I finally wrote the " formal " request to the LEA and submitted it in January. (I'd written one by e-mail, but had been asked to place the request on hold, with some very good tactical reasons from the LEA we couldn't argue against. These case conference meetings have been to determine additional testing/evals needed, then to discuss the results.) I was asked to support our request with specifics, so I let loose with both barrels! I told them that the evaluations done by the Deaf School were prior to understanding that has visual issues (as shown by the Blind School testing) and the testing has not been repeated. I also stated that we don't feel the school can adequately test her locally. The Blind School staff could not sign (ASL) so had to use someone from the Deaf School to interpret. They utilized the same Deaf school staff that had evaluated her functional vision (inappropriately) in 2003 as an interpreter. There were other issues, as well as noting that no one in the 9 state area (IN, MI, IL, OH, WI, KY, TN, MN, MO) offered evaluation of individuals who are deafblind/dual sensory impaired. There are many resources for these folks, but no one to evaluate them. Anyway, it has been a long road to get this. We are thrilled. I got e-ticket confirmation yesterday, so it is a happenin' thing! Sometimes schools seem intent on creating roadblocks. Ugh. Your arguments were superlative. The Perkins perspective is going to bring alot of clarity to 's needs. The testing will be done at a star locale. I think many of us on the list have a lot of gratitude to deafblind resources. And, it sounds as if once specific needs are identified, that there should be support relatively near if that is the path you all choose. I can't wait to hear the results of your visit to Perkins.
