Adding T3 to Armour

Hi everyone,

Since I haven't had much luck with the Armour thyroid,

my doc decided to add some T3. Last year, I was up to

180mg of Armour and felt no different than when I was

on 30mg. Although, I DO feel better on Armour than on

nothing.

The reason I'm writing is I'm wondering if anyone has

any advice on HOW to take the T3? The instructions are

take 15mg 2 times per day. Does anyone have any

further advice? I take the Armour (30mg right now)

sublingually in the morning.

I sure hope this added T3 makes a difference!!!!

Thanks!

M.

As I sit here with my dose of T3 resting under my happy tongue....

T3 can be swallowed... using the empty stomach rule... or you can take it

sublingually... sublingually the effects are pretty much immediate... as

soon as it starts dissolving and sucked up into the capillaries under

there....

I happen to take a quarter of a 25 mcg tab... so thats..... Ummmmm 6 1/4

mcg at a time (right now it's ONE of my nine doses per day).. that seems

a comfy dose for me... though I'm a multi-doser... and, for right now..

am taking one type of thyroid tab or another every other hour (cuz my

dose is still way to low, I'm building it back up and I'm not able to

function much more than about three hours between doses before I'm

crashing. As my dose gets back up to where it was, so that my total per

day will be higher (about triple what I'm on right now is my 'best' dose)

I'll be able to take more at one time and not have to dose so often, my

reserves of T4 will be higher and my conversion will be higher).

If you remember that the T3 that you take (be it as a synthetic or in

Armour (natural)) is 95% used up within four hours... any extreme effects

will be wearing off in that time, if you took too much, and it's benefits

are also going to be waining in that time - unless your own conversion

was able to use the T3 you took (for lack of batter term) to prime it's

function and kick up your own T3 production.

Having messed with so many types of thyroid my 'happiest/best/healthiest'

feeling has been dosing with straight T3 every 3 hours.. and nothing

else... BUT if I miss a dose... I'm flat on my face... so I still think

it's best to work on getting T4 reserves and conversion up to a point

where the body is able to produce enough active hormone through

conversion to keep levels more consistent between dosing of supplemental

hormone.

If you take the hormones with food you have issues with binding with

chemicals in the food.. .with the synthetic T4 meds you need the stomach

acid to break down the T4 to a usable form (actually, it's removing the

extra sodium molecule they put on it) with the T3 it, as far as I know,

is strictly a teeny pill in a stomach full of food getting lost

situation.. so with that, as far as I know it's a one hour rule... and

hour before a meal and hour after a meal....

With the T4s... it's 4 hours after a meal... or 1 hour before...

It's a breeze to take them sublingually though, just tuck it under your

tongue. It's very quick to dissolve.. and that's the end of it.

T3 pretty much acts right away.. but it sorta depends....

If your body is doing a really poor job of converting, it might suck up

the T3 that you take and do WOW... or it might be so deficient that the

receptors really don't have much, that so many are empty that what you

are taking isn't enough to go around and it won't sense it much...

As long as your heart isn't doing flip flops and you didn't start

bouncing off the walls just stick to your guns for a few days... and then

it might be time to tweak the T3 up a wee bit more. The increase in

energy.. the 'want to do stuff' feeling.. that is the T3 level coming

up... is that feeling more during that first 2 or 3 hours after a dose or

did the feeling stick through the day? You are dosing twice a day right

now, right?

T3 doesn't build up in the body like the T4 does.. .so there isn't that

huge lag time and danger of taking too much LONG before you can feel it

and getting yourself in a fix....

But keep in mind too.. that the T4 that is in your system might actually

be built up but your body can't convert... for some folks adding the

direct T3 (via a pill, be it Armour with all the hormones or a straight

T3 pill) will sorta 'prime the pump' and get the conversion started..

that's why you can't just go hog wild on adding T3.. cuz if your body

does start converting.. then you will have a surge of T3 in your system

and will go bouncing off the walls!!!

What you can do is spot check your resting pulse rate.... do it before

taking a dose of T3 and then oh... every half hour to an hour after....

it's the weekend.. maybe you can have a quiet day so that you can do

that.... you need to be sitting quietly for 15 to 20 minutes to do a

resting pulse rate.

You should see your pulse rate rise a bit... maybe only a couple of beats

a minute, then come back down as the T3 is being used up... it's really

kinda fun to watch.. but then I'm sorta weird! hehehe

As your own conversion comes up the resting heart rate becomes more

stable... gradually rising over time (days, weeks, months) to level off

in the low 70s (for most folks). If it turns out that your conversion

just never does seem to want to kick in.. then you'll continue to see the

resting rate raise a bit after a dose of T3, then drop within a few

hours...

After watching this stuff in myself for so long.. I just dont' get why

the docs don't check this stuff.... seems so simple to me...

I'll have a good day today... I did my increase.... after two weeks of my

phone being busted I actually had this spark of ambition to tear it apart

and fix it.... the poor baby is 12 years old... but I love it... it's a

headset phone that is ideal to be using when I need to talk on the phone

and type at the same time... don't want to lose it!!

I'll have a couple more good days.. then I'll have a mild frump/crash

that will last a week to as long as three weeks... oh how I HATE doing

adjustments!! Then I'm a bit blah for a while.. then I mellow out and

start to feel more 'even'.... then I wait till it's time to do the next

increase....
