HI all,

I know this isn't exactly about Hypo, but I figured I would ask.

My doctor has ordered a CAT scan, not for anything Hypo related, or

maybe it is? Seems like everything is related to hypo in one way or

another...hmmm,

Well, anyway, I am SEVERELY calustrophobic and am a bit nervous. has

anyone had one done? How was it? Am I freaking for no reason?

Thanks, Jackie

The CAT scans I've had have been OK, you have to lie still but it's an

open-ended system, you aren't in an enclosed tunnel..what is he scanning??

It will depend what it is as where you are

positioned.....................Meleese in Oz xxx

hi,

you may want to ask doc for a sedative to help. iwent for a ct on my

lungs yesterday and had a panic event now mine could be due to the

fact that i'm on heavy pain meds for a broken arm. iopened my eyes

as she was getting me set up and i looked up to see the machine a few

inches from my face and that was it went nutty on her. to stop that

for next time i will be getting some kind of sedative before i go

it is better to be safe than sorry

Yes, that is when I get the most severe claustrophobia is when things =, no matter how small are near my face. Thank you, I will check into that.  What kind of sedative?Jackiehi, you may want to ask doc for a sedative to help. iwent for a ct on my lungs yesterday and had a panic event now mine could be due to the fact that i'm on heavy pain meds for a broken arm. iopened my eyes as she was getting me set up and i looked up to see the machine a few inches from my face and that was it went nutty on her. to stop that for next time i will be getting some kind of sedative before i goit is better to be safe than sorryDawn in Canada>> The CAT scans I've had have been OK, you have to lie still but it's an > open-ended system, you aren't in an enclosed tunnel..what is he scanning?? > It will depend what it is as where you are > positioned.....................Meleese in Oz xxx> > ----- Original Message ----- > > > > HI all,> >> > I know this isn't exactly about Hypo, but I figured I would ask.> >> > My doctor has ordered a CAT scan, not for anything Hypo related, or> > maybe it is? just something that will relax you but that would also mean that you

would need to be accompanied. not sure of name of drug but there are

a # of things that would act as a sedative and help you through it

you might even be able to get it otc.

I've had a CAT scan before... they are very calming and peaceful. Most hospitals don't use the old tubes anymore and have switched to machines that look a bit more like this http://www.dragon-tongue.com/2004/CatScanSmall.jpg, which resemble the newer MRI machines. Your head and toes will be out of it at the same time and it's very mobile and non constricting. If you do have the older machine, you can tell the technician about your claustrophobia and they should be able to work with you and answer any questions you have because I can promise you, you're not the first person to go through one that's claustrophobic. I've seen stuffed animals go through so that the kids would see that it wouldn't hurt them :).. very cute.

You also may be given headphones to listen to as well. The only thing you can really do to prevent a panic attack, is to deal with why you are claustrophobic to begin with. Isn't deprogramming from childhood scary? LOL. Until then, focusing your breathing will help, meditating, daydreaming that you're in a far off place will help.

If you get chilly, they will also give you lots of warm blankets :).

I hope this helps and allows you to feel more comfortable about it. If you'd like technical aspects, here you go:

Thank you :)I'm pretty sure this will be a newer one, they just opened the facility. My claustrophobia is completely and utterly irrational, I get so mad at myself. I am a very logical person, and to not be able to talk myself out of this ridiculous fear really Pees me off. I'm not really afraid of it, like I think it will hurt me or anything.  I just have a feeling of not being able to breath when something is near my face, no matter how small. Like I clicked on the picture you attached and I could feel my pressure go up just imagining myself going through it.
