Guest guest
The KEY thing to this -and something that was very well identified as a need when this process started- is what Jane Hill and are doing right now. And that's encouraging communication between programs and by those involved. This state has more resources than most know and the answer is likely in some type of a central method of listing skills sites. All programs HAVE to be responsible for helping. It's not right if a program doesn't have enough consideration for their students to help schedule a skills test. It's not a hard thing to do. They've invested enough in their students already that it's a rather small step. Every coordinator knows far in advance when their group will need to test. The reps we deal with are very helpful (more thanks to ) and almost always accomodate the first requested date. Those that choose to do nothing but gripe about the NR process could probably direct their energy toward a resolution and therefore help everyone. But to me - one does have reason to gripe if the program they attend(ed) neglects to even help find a site. If any course coordinators are in the position that they cannot physically schedule skills testing sites - then they can communicate to other programs in advance and find the available sites. They are out there. We (at ETMC-EMS) are basically doing two skills test sites per year that coincide with our graduating paramedic classes. And others are welcome to attend (for a very reasonable fee). We will have another in July. Two sites per year is not much and we are not in a " business " of doing skills test sites. But two sites per year can sure help. If we had a central list of sites - then that's two sites to add to it. If only 20 programs held 2 sites per year and listed them - a list of 40 potential sites would be a great thing to offer to any group of students in the state. The answer starts with coordinators who are trying to help their students. And communication. The state website seems like a perfect place for a listing - is this possible? (Maxie, others?) - but DSHS wouldn't be responsible for the comunication - that's the job of the coordinators. If we can just communicate our scheduled sites to one central list.... Don, Tyler >>> 04/10/07 10:27 AM >>> I know there are several locations across the state that seem to be doing like we do and hosting regular exams to accomodate students from all programs who do not have a site. We have one Intermediate level practical and one Paramedic leve practical each quarter in Abilene and pick up students from across the state and from other states. We can even hold them more often if a group is graduating and has enough students to pay for a test upon request. Exam sites don't just pop up it takes alot of people willing to come and use a day they have off. I try to have one at the end of my semesters if I can get enough instructors to pool together. I try to mostly have open test sites but because of not having enough examiners (that will not be here for free) its hard to test over 25 people for me here. at least.
