Hey ,

Welcome to the group. This is the best group

that I have found. What part of Pa are you from. I

am from the Altoona area.

I have a question for the rest of the gang. For

the past couple months I have been more depressed than

usual to the point where I can not crawl out of bed

until the evening.

I was at the doctor yesterday for my 2 month

check up and discovered that I lost 42 lbs I have had

problems losing weight like most with hypothyroid

problems have.

My doc thinks that this is a seasonal depression

and has upped my meds for that. I am also diabetic

and have been having alot of low blood sugar episodes

so he told me to cut back a 1/2 a pill and if I

continued to have problems to eliminate that

medication.

Is my doc right or is this thyroid related? Any

thoughts?

Robin

Did he check your thyroid levels before he upped your

dose? What medicine is it? For thyroid or for

depression? Insist that your doctor do lab work

instead of just masking the symptoms.

With this time of year, seasonal depression is quite

common. I know it is cold where you are, so you need

to try extra hard to get as much sunlight as you

can--whether it is artificial (by one of those sun

lamps) or by going outside for 5 or 10 minutes at a

time.

My sister lives in land and she is going through

this same thing. She'll insist on thyroid labs and

when they come back fine, instead of increasing the

anti-depressant, she tries to get more sunlight and

exercise. Pilates or Yoga really help. Make sure

your diet is full of fruits, vegetables, fiber and

healthy omega 3s. Drink plenty of water. In the

winter, we tend to not drink as much water as we do in

the summer time and we unpurposely dehydrate ourselves

which begins that sluggish cycle. Water with a slice

of lemon, grapefruit or orange boosts your spirits and

helps you to stay fresh. A pineapple spear is also

good in a tall glass of ice water.

Most doctors studied very little on nutrition, so it

helps to become knowledgeable on diet for thyroid

conditions and especially diabetes. Be your own

advocate--read books on the subject. Questions

everything and look up the meds he/she gives you to

find out if the side effects cause some of the

symptoms. Sometimes a drug will cause a symptom and

the doctors will prescribe another pill to treat that

new symptom, which was caused by the first drug. It's

a vicious cycle.

You can always look the drug up online, or ask your

pharmacist for a drug information pamphlet. They

should have them on file.

I know how hard it is to get out of bed. Some days I

come right back home after taking the children to

school and crash in bed. Most days, I have to force

myself to stay up. A walk outside (no matter how

cold) usually refreshes me enough to finish out the

day.

Take care of yourself.

Dorothy,

I will have to check and see what labs were done. I am on

levothyroxine and it was my effexor xl that he upped from 225 to 300

mg. I do my best to eat alot of fibers and fruits because I also

have diverticulosis.

I have more medical problems than I can handle. and of course I

take alot of different medications for them.

Right noow I am operating under a brain fog, I really have to

concentrate to express myself and stuff.

Thanks for your response I appreciate it.

Hi Robin,

Depression can certainly be thyroid related, and doctors in the know often

treat depression with T3. Are you taking any T3 ? Also, one needs slightly

more thyroid hormone in winter than in summer, which could account for the

so-called 'seasonal depression'.

Hope this helps,

Lili

I was actually been able to come off anti-depressants ...........and I was

suicidal once I started on Armour so must have been the T3. give a thought

to adding T3 in some form if you're not already on it or on

Armour.................Meleese in Oz xxx
