Guest guest
hello, This may seem really weird. I have Graves and have recently had an ablation (RAI). I'm too afraid to mention this to my doctor. For the past three years (i'm 41) I've struggled with getting diagnosed and when I was finally given the correct diagnosis, I was relieved. The only " symptom " that I have not seen written about anywhere (and I'm really embarrassed to ask this) is having feelings towards the same sex. I was hoping with the ablation, that those desires would go away (and it slowly has), but as my thyroid levels wax and wane (I'm not on synthroid, yet) so does my sexual desires towards women. I would never act on anything, but I would love to know if anyone else has experienced this, if this is " normal " , and if I should mention this to my doctor. I've enjoyed reading everyone's posts--they are most insightful. Thank you in advance. Dot
Guest guest
Dorothy, If it is a symptom, you should definitely talk it over with your doctor. Personally, I have never heard of someone's thyroid medication causing them same sex arousal. Although.. I have a gay friend and while taking Welbutrin for a short while, it made him have feelings towards women. He had known he was gay since oh about 5 or 6 so you can see why it freaked him out LOL. I know that hormones when off can make you all kinds of crazy. To quote a line from a tv show once 'I'm 17, looking at floor tile makes me horny!' LOL... In prison systems when there is no alternative, female inmates are occasionally placed with the males and have reported to shift their hormone levels so much that they can have their voices change, become more muscular in build and even grow a beard! So I don't think it's impossible for anyone's medication to cause feelings like that. I will say something else... Is this a symptom or is this your inner self trying to let you see who you are? If you are attracted to the same sex, there is no judgement here, nor should you feel ashamed of it. Some people simply just don't realize that they prefer to be with the same sex until later in life, a close family member of mine is one of them and she has children too! if you at some point feel that this person that you are occasionally when your meds/levels flux, is who you really are, make sure you surround yourself with people that are tolerant, loving, kind and very supportive, because you may find that this person isn't just a fad. If so, you may have a lot of internal struggle as it may be hard for you to accept, or hard for others in your family to accept, which is very common in people that 'come out' later in life. Too many times people are discriminated against for all types of reasons, sexuality shouldn't be one of them. Neither should any of the other 'reasons'. You should never appologize for who you are... ever. That implies that you feel guilty or bad for being you and you shouldn't feel that way at all. Ever. You do not control people's reactions.. they do. You may want to try speaking with your local GLAD chapter or any other agency that was supportive of gay/lesbian rights, to see if anyone has had similar experiences. A link on sexual function and thyroid behavior.. or is that thyroid function and sexual behavior?? http://www.thyroid-info.com/articles/shames-sexdrive.htm Good luck Dot. Let me know what you find out.. a strange symptom and/or question hello,This may seem really weird. I have Graves and have recently had an ablation (RAI). I'm too afraid to mention this to my doctor. Guest guest
Thank you , so much, for your kind and supportive words. These past 3-4 weeks have been terrible to my mind and body and I'm really only hanging in there by reminding myself that " this too shall pass " . Before the ablation, my TSH was 0.004, my free t4 was 2.01 and my Free serum (triiodothyronine) was 6.3. Those are all off the charts. I go in Thursday morning for more labs. Is there lab work for regular female hormones? That would be interesting to know. Thank you again. You've said the right things and I truly appreciate everything. Guest guest
You'll want to have your doctor test all of your sexual function hormones, male ones to. This way you know which ones are balanced and which aren't. The sticky wicket of the situation is, if one is off, all are off... Your thyroid hormones aren't sexual hormones, BUT they work so closely with the adrenal glands and they work with the other sexual hormones that this is often why thyroid patients have hormonal fluxing. Here is some information on hormones: Sexual Hormones: http://www.gfmer.ch/Endo/Lectures_08/sexual_hormones.htm Hormones Influence Sexual Orientation: http://www.mercola.com/blog/2004/dec/7/hormones_influence_sexual_orientation Hormones & Sexual Problems: http://medbroadcast.com/channel_section_details.asp?text_id=1803 & channel_id=1003 & relation_id=4540 Sex Hormones Tests: http://www.healthatoz.com/healthatoz/Atoz/common/standard/transform.jsp?requestURI=/healthatoz/Atoz/ency/sex_hormones_tests.jsp Hormones & Sex -- Monday September 12, 1949 (TIME MAGAZINE):http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,888633,00.html Good luck and let me know what you find out. a strange> symptom and/or question> > > hello,> This may seem really weird.
