Guest guest
Honestly, I've probably been mistaken some as well. I had always thought it was my obligation to find a skills exam -- thus my concerns about the lack of exam sites. I've no doubt that between Maxie's efforts, the good will of a lot of people, and Eddie's efforts, that I will have an opportunity to find a skills exam when I finish my class in October. Regardless, I think this was a discussion worth having as it would seem that this is not an isolated problem. Again, some of this confusion stems from communication -- something we all need to work on in EMS. -Wes Ogilvie In a message dated 4/11/2007 7:35:02 AM Central Daylight Time, ewalker@... writes: Yes, Wes is in my program and yes I DID forget. Are you saying the programs must do it, should do it, or what? What I've done in the past is look at the NR site for available exams, contact the exam coordinator of that site to find out it any openings are available and if so, send him/her a list of the students wanting to test at that time. I then gave the students the contact info and made it their responsibility to contact, schedule and pay for the exam. Guest guest
Now then ---- Would it be easier to just verify the skills in class like we use to? All those years were we generating substandard paramedics providing substandard care? No-- of course not. I've been teaching paramedics since 1988, in that time I have never seen any benefit for the program or student to have a separate NR exam. To me it is a waste of time and money. If coordinators are trusted to put on the program, and now presumably schedule an NR exam, which we always have, why can't they be trusted to conduct their own skills exam? Most coordinators use the same examiners every time. NR reps could come around and do random audits. -MH ________________________________ From: texasems-l [texasems-l ] On Behalf Of THEDUDMAN@... Subject: Re: NR Woes, Ad Infinitum Thanks Maxie...maybe something we can address through rulemaking...I still say that a plan/contract for conducting final skills testing SHOULD be MANDATORY for programs wishing to teach an advanced class. This is a coordinator issue...not a NR issue...these coordinators who are not planning on their students to test at the end of their program is what is a shame... Dudley Re: NR Woes, Ad Infinitum Wes What about the school you took your EMT -I at? Will your coordinator not do an exam site? Exam sites don't just pop up it takes alot of people willing to come and use a day they have off. I try to have one at the end of my semesters if I can get enough instructors to pool together. I try to mostly have open test sites but because of not having enough examiners (that will not be here for free) its hard to test over 25 people for me here. at least.
