Guest guest
Val, Your taste will return in good time, honey. It just stinks while you're going through it. Think of it as a good time to avoid all the junk in your life, increasing good things like fruits/vegetables (especially if everything tastes like reynold's foil anyway!). Buy yourself some sherbet or sorbets, which freeze your taste buds to help bring you a little enjoyment. If everything tastes like metal, then why eat a hot fudge sundae, right? Focus on getting healthy, mind body and soul. It will all be worth it...you'll see! Best,
Guest guest
I know they told me this would be a side effect of my chemo but I have to admit, I was not prepared for this nasty bitter taste in my mouth now! YECHHH!!! There are very few things that I can eat that actually taste decent to me now. Any advice?? I am looking at the bright side of this--I will lose weight during chemo. Heaven knows I can stand to lose it! I have struggled all my life with weight and I can lose around 100 LBs and still not be where the weight charts SAY I should be ha ha! I am just hoping that when I DO get my taste back that I don't constantly pig out and gain it all back. I had my Herceptin yesterday and had diarhea once again last night. I am drinking lot's of fluids and other then that I am great! Val
Guest guest
I just had my 2nd chemo treatment on yesterday (1/16/07). Mostly everyone I've talked to that has gone through chemo have told me I would be nauseous and would vomit, especially while smelling food cookin (mainly fried foods). I said this could be a positive side of it all because I am a big girl and I thought maybe I would some lose weight Notttt, I have had an opposite effect (EVERYTHING taste good). I have been eating like mad, getting up all through the night eating (2,3,4 clock in the morning) grrr. I should add that so far I haven't gained any weight but haven't lost any either. On the other hand, it's good I have an appetite I guess.

Guest guest
Val, Try some ginger ale and also try sucking on some hard candy to see if that helps. I know I had a metallic taste when I had my chemo and the only things that tasted good to me were dairy products, pizza and spaghetti. Needless to say I gained on chemo. I will keep you in my prayers. Guest guest
Thank or the tip, I normally drink diet ginerale but stopped a while back, I will start drinking it again and far as the candy, I am diabetic and have to be careful of sugar. I have bought sugar free hard candy and I will buy a bag and keep on hand. Again, thank you for the tip.
Guest guest
Thanks for all the suggestions! My Hubby did get some peppermint ice cream bars that were marked down after Christmas--THOSE tasted good! Also some rootbeer barrels. :-) Val
Guest guest
Oh Val, I feel for you. Be sure that eventually, your taste buds will return to normal (although I STILL can't stand the smell or taste of tunafish!) I found that fruit with sugar like watermellon and pineapple and drinks like lemonade or sweetened ice tea worked for me. I also found that I couldn't drink or eat anything TOO hot or TOO cold. Warm tea, warm soda, warm everything. I did lose about 30 pounds through my chemo but not everyone does. Many have said that the steroids that they give increase your appetite. So far, I've managed to keep the weight off (10 months out now) so go for it, but do try and stay hydrated. Best of luck to you. Guest guest
I realized that for me alot of the nasty taste was " left over " from the last thing I ate. So I make sure to rinse out my mouth well with water after I eat. Oddly enough, I have found that mouthwash leaves the absolute WORST aftertaste! Guest guest
Hi Lucinda, Make sure your mouthwash does not contain alcohol. I used Biotene mouthwash. Also, Tom's of Maine makes a mouthwash that doesn't contain alcohol. - eaglemom53 wrote on 1/17/2007, 11:23 AM: > I realized that for me alot of the nasty taste was " left over " from > the last thing I ate.
