Kudos to you, I was scheduled to run a marathon in Alaska for Team in

Training with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for my 30th birthday. Instead,

I

GOT cancer for my 30th birthday. I can't imagine training right now. I had my

TT in July and RAI is supposed to be at the beginning of Oct. Are you not

doing the RAI? Or are they waiting until after your 2nd neck dissection? Where

were your mets? That's what concerns me at this point. I know it traveled

outside of my Thyroid, but they said they won't know until we do the scans where

else it has gone. Ugh, the waiting game. In repsonse to your request, I'd

love to support you, but all of my charitable budget has been used towards my

TNT goals. Good Luck and keep us posted.

age 30 (6/21)

dx Hashimoto's 5/2000

dx pap by FNA 6/27/03

TT 7/17/03-main lesion 2.1x1.9x1.0cm on isthmus, multi-focal-pinpoint

(1-3mm) lesions throughout both lobes, 1 lymph node removed

Accidentally got a parathyroid, couldn't remove from thyroid

Currently on Cytomel, RAI scheduled 10/7/03

As an athlete, you might be interested to know that Smyers is

" one of us " (thyca survivors, that is!). is a world-class

triathlete who won the Hawaii Ironman in 1995. She was diagnosed with

thyroid cancer in Dec. 1999.

has spoken at several of the Annual Thyca Conferences. I heard

her speak at last year's L.A. Conference as she was enroute to the

Ironman once again! If you need inspiration and motivation as you

train for your marathon, you can find out more on Smyers by

doing a google search.

Best wishes,

Marilyn (whose knees are too lousy for running, but is very physically

active nonetheless!)

Dx in 1994, papillary w/follicular variant & lung metastases.

Positive scans in '94,'95,'96,'97,'98. 435mCi's RAI.

Clean scans '99,'00,'02,'03...the last two scans w/Thyrogen.

> hi all

> i've been reading the posts for the past couple weeks. i am 24

years old and found out on 6-27-03 that i have metastatic papillary

carcinoma. i had a partial thyroidectomy and a neck dissection on

8-04-03 and will have to have the same deal for the left side in

december. needless to say i'm totally shocked and bummed. i am a

graduate student in physical therapy and this whole lack of energy

deal sucks!! anyway, i'm writing because during this whole ordeal i

am attempting to train for the chicago marathon that is on october 12.

i ran it last year and was already in training when i got my

diagnosis. it is a much bigger challenge this year, but it is helping

me mentally. ironically i was a charity runner for the american

cancer society last year. i really wanted to do that this year, but

did not have the time or energy to put into fundraising. my sister

surprised me a couple days ago and signed me up for it and is taking

care of all of the work for me!! i thought some people on this site

would be interested in possibly donating since we have all been

personally touched. if you are, please email me at kmcruns@n... and i

can give you info on how to participate. thanks!!

Thanks for the welcome. I forgot to mention that I am a vegetarian and

it seems like Weight Watchers is the only group that actually

addresses my concerns. I am very excited about the program---of

course I am new---but it seems like I can make sense out of the point

system and I am also learning more about nutrition. Glad to see this

group is here and I will be spending some time reading some of the

messages in the archives. I read something about a chocolate tofu pie

Check to see if the Y near you offers scholarships. The one I

belong to does, as it's part of their mission to help people.

There have been several members of my water exercise class whose

fees were paid by this program. It certainly sounds like you

would qualify--in fact, your stepdaughter might also be able to

benefit from the Y.

Tricia,

call your local Y and tell them your problem. They give scholarships. I

have one in DE. I am disabled and can't afford it either. try it. all

they can do is refuse you. Or, if they've given away all this year's

scholarships they will tell you when to apply for next year.

Hi. I am interested in learning more about this disease. My

temperature extremes have been uncontrollable. I am a hypo-

hasimotothyroid diagnosed since 8 yrs old. I am on Armour. My

temperature extremes and hair loss are not treated with the

medication. Any comments are appreciated in addition to any weblinks

or information on living with this disease.

Thanks.

Actually the Armour usually treats hair loss and temperature extremes

caused by thyroid issues so you are on medication for it, just

probabley not on the correct dose for you.

When were your last labs?

What dose are you on and when was your last increase/decrease?

What other symptoms do you have? Dry skin/moist skin?

You say temperature extremes but is it too hot/ too cold..both?

I was on synthroid since 8 and changed to Armour about 10 years ago.

My symptoms have never totally disappeared. I have other symptoms-

facial hairs, extreme sweating.I am on 1.5 grains Armour. I have

always had hair that sheds like a dog,my temperature extremes have

been on the cold side but since I am near menopause, I am getting

warm extremes.

Several Dr's have refused to write a prescription for thyroid

medicine.I have not been to a endocrinologist for 15 years due to

primary HMO's. I have found a primary who is willing to write me a

referral.

It sounds like you are not on the right dosage... from what I have learned because our thyroid levels change and flux, your dosage may need to change and flux with your body's need for it. If you've stayed on this dosage for 10 years, it doesn't shock me at all that you have symptoms still. Get the referral, but before you do call and ask to speak with the doctor. If you can't, talk with his/her nurse/office manager and ask them how they treat their patient (by labs alone or along with symptoms)... do they run all thyroid tests instead of TSH alone? (T3, T4, Free T3, Free T4, antibodies, etc.)? Shamon's about.com site and a few of her books have great 'interrogation forms' for doctors.

When was your last set of lab tests ran? Do you still have the results? Can you post them, with normal ranges included? Are you taking any multi-vitamins? Do they contain iron? If so, does it also have selenium? What types of foods do you eat? Do you eat a natural 'home grown' type of diet with lots of home made foods or do you eat a lot of processed foods? Do you have high cholesterol? How is your pulse rate? A normal pulse rate is between 60-104 beats per minute. Do you know how to take your Basal Body Temperature? It is a good indication to let you know if your body still isn't getting proper thyroid levels. In the old days 50s & earlier it was as one of the staple signs of hypothyroidism.

Soy and products that are goitrogens (foods that are chemically structured in a way that may alter thyroid hormone output) can be bad for people with thyroid problems. If you always eat the foods and you have done this from the beginning (being medicated) your labs/dosage are formulated to function that way. Particularly if you take your dosage with food. IF you eat a diet high in soy, certain leafy green veggies like cabbage, spinach, cauliflour, etc. it can alter your thyroid output levels and absorption levels by your body so you will not get the proper dosage. Certain foods when cooked lose some if not most or all of their goitrogenic properties, it all depends on how they are cooked/processed before consumption.

Usually with thyroid problems, because you will have one hormone that is out of whack, others often follow suit. The most common are the sexual hormones (adrenal hormones - cortisol, adrenaline, etc., testosterone, progestrine, progesterone, estrogen, etc.) you can have testing done by your regular doc or gyno to determine if these are off. If they are off, it would be a good idea to treat them as they may be masking or adding to what you think may be your thyroid problem. Other endocrine problems like diabetes are often a factor with thyroid disease also.

Many people do well to take multi-vitamins (that don't contain soy), b-complex support for energy, brain fog, etc. liquid usually works best for most people although pill form works well to, it's just your preference. Oils like fish oil help with giving essential fatty acids and things that your body needs to function well and it can also lessen cortisol output by your adrenal glands (if they output high). Drinking around 60-80oz of water a day are great to do... it helps your body flush toxins, keeps your kidneys & bladder clean, helps you digest food easier, keeps you from getting sick from being backed up for to long.... most people don't realize the reason they have constipation is because their bodies are trying to suck what's left of the water out of their pooh because it's the closest source the body naturally has to getting water....

Oh, and for the body odor thing... this can happen because of certain foods you will eat, bacteria that grows on your body in dark moist places (like armpits & genital areas), and because of hormone imbalances. For some people, this is easily treated, for others... not so much. I found for me personally that when my thyroid levels were straightened out, I stopped being smelly... the most interesting cause I've found is that if you are around people who eat a lot of processed foods, when they sweat they smell horrible but people who eat foods with less additives and who take a more natural approach to their health care do not. Before I could apply deodorant 3-4 times a day and it wouldn't help... my body chemistry was so off... now it's a lot better. Of course.... sometimes certain deodorants can make you smell worse to! All kinds of culprits to that one...

If you use deodorant with aluminum in it, (it's usually listed as the active ingredient), it has been linked to cause alzheimer's disease and can clog up your pores and lymph nodes. If you have to use it, try to use something like a deodorant crystal or crystal spray or roll on before it, as it will create a boundary around your skin and will not allow the aluminum to show up.

I have heard of people using listerine as a pinch when they run out of deodorant because of it's alcoholic properties. I recommend however to not use the cinnamon kind as you will break out like nobody's business LOL.

Here is an interesting patient/doctor response about basal body temp testing and thyroid testing..

Hi Janet, welcome...

I'm wondering if the dosage you were on was the correct one for you?

When you are dealing with hormone replacement there isn't a set dosage,

though their are general guidelines... it comes down to how well your

body is utilizing the hormone that you are taking.. to be able to

determine that it seems to work best by using not only lab results of the

thyroid hormone levels (TSH testing alone to determine this is a waste of

time and money) but also by monitoring your symptoms.

Seems as though your symptoms have persisted.. the question then becomes

why?

Common sense says it's that your body isn't getting enough of the hormone

that it needs...

Is it the type of hormone you are taking?

How you are taking it?

Are you taking the correct amount for YOU?

Are you eating the right foods, avoiding the wrong foods?

Are you taking the nutritional supplements (vitamins and minerals) that

will help your hormone challenged body work to it's best ability?

Are you keeping doses of calcium and iron at least four hours apart from

your Armour dose (if you are swallowing it)?

Do you know if you have any nutritional deficiencies that are making it

harder for your body to utilize the hormones that you are taking?

How long since you've had labs run? Can you show us the results, with the

lab's ranges, so that we can see what things look like?

I'm not sure how much reading you've done yet... we've got a web page up

that runs through some of the basics of the hormones, meds and labs so

that what we're talking about here will make more sense to you, you're

more than welcome to swing by and take a look..

A good article - as far as it goes. But it should be noted that individuals

differ in their reation to goitrogens. Some people can tolerate vaste

quantities of one product, but react badly to just a trace of another. And

cooking doesn't always help. Also, not everybody is sensitive to all of

them. The best way to find out is to illiminate all of them from your diet

for a couple of weeks, then reintroduce them one at a time and see how you

feel. Because, it has to be said, that a reaction to a goitrogen (especially

soy) can be almost immediate (within a couple of hours), giving flu-like

symptoms. I know that some people refuse to believe this and call it an

allergic reaction but it is, nevertheless, a goitrogenic reaction.

Just thought I'd stress that, for what it's worth.
