wow i never realized how much cancer is on my moms side of the family

and some on my dads. Mom is still recovering from her infected breast

and the other day she fell and sprained her ankle and foot. moms sister

called yesterday and found out she possibly has lung cancer and has to

have a biopsy done soon. moms oldest sister died of colon cancer yrs

ago, my grandfather died of lung cancer 8 yrs ago, and somebody else on

her side died of a type of cancer. breast cancer and skin cancer runs

high on dads side. whats worse about her sister is she already had the

fibroid?? breast issues yrs ago and just got diagnosed recently with

neuropathy?? (some kind of crippling muscle disease)and she has custody

of 4 of my cousins kids and now might have lung cancer. wow what a mess!

Mstrylade,

I can relate! My mom had Multiple Myeloma(abnormal plasma cells that

eventually attack the bone marrow)her brother and sister lung cancer,

her nephew(passed away in his 40's of liver cancer)On my dad's side

on brother with prostate cancer and his sister with liver cancer,my

half brother with prostate cancer and half sister with lung cancer

and now me with BC. My 2 sons...We've talked and i'm desperately am

trying to change their thoughts on the foods they choose! Some

families suffer diabetes, skin diseases and even mental illness etc

etc, etc.Oh,4 known relatives on my dad's side with schizophrenia and

bi-polar illness. My cousin kevin lived with me for 3-4 years, that's

a hard one to work with. I applaud anyone who cares for a family

member with M.I.!

God " deals us all sorts of hands in this game called life " . It is up

to us to play that hand smart and not hard...To know when to HOLD 'EM

and when to FOLD " EM AND WHEN TO CASH 'EM IN!

So... does this mean there is more cancer today than say 50 years ago, or does

this mean more treatment than 50 years ago (50 years ago people just died and

illness might have not been disclosed)? Is there more cancer now because of all

the changes we have made to our environment? Just curious in what your thoughts

might be....

Its kinda hard to say, but I'm 34 and my parents are 16 yrs apart in age and

from what I remember learning about the past is that alot of things seemed to be

hush hush or an embarrassment back then, or they didnt want people to know their

business. Plus obviously they didnt have the technology then that we do know so

I guess they were kinda deprived. So hopefully there is finally some leeway on

cures instead of deaths.

hey sandy, I feel ya on the mental illness too. There is a ton of it on moms

side on top of everything else and I got a touch of it myself after my divorce.

Ive always been a person who could do a good cry and get over it but when my

divorce happened there was alot of other crap going on too that hit me all at

once and i got diagnosed with severe clinical depression, anxiety, and panic. i

had my first anxiety attack and never want another one! i was sick for 5 mos and

my dr almost put me in the hospital. i never noticed that part either until it

happened to me. mom actually had a breakdown when i was small. part of that

stemmed from a wreck she had about 10 yrs before that killed her husband at the

time (mom sis dad). they didnt let her go to the funeral because she was injured

so bad. moms side has bipolar, depression, all kinds of stuff. i feel so sorry

for my cousins youngest he got the worst. he has adhd, oppositional defiance

disorder, borderline bipolar and something

else. he is only 9. he started showing signs at 4 and she had to fight to get

him help at that age. they wanted to wait til he was 6 but he was violent and

threatening to stab and kill people at 4yrs old! he is the sweetest kid and

really smart when he is not having episodes. he just got out of mental hosp a

few wks ago for the 2nd time. all of my cousins kids have some kind of mental if

not several types. i think part of it was caused by her drinking and drugs while

pregnant. she is a whole other story grr!

Hi Ladies,

Blessings and prayers for all you strong, courageous ladies.

As for bc years ago.....mine was 22 years ago. My Moms was 20 years

before that. With my Mom they only did radical masts. Twenty years

later (my time), they did modified radial masts. At my time if no nodes

were involved, they did the masts and sent you home to have a good

life. Today, the rules are different if you have node involvement or if

you don't. Forty years ago, Mom passed 2 1/2 years after dx. They only

expected her to life a couple of months. She stayed around to tie up

her loose ends first. She went back to work for almost 2 years. With

me, I'm still here 22 years later. They do still check me, but that's

only bloodwork yearly.

As for the hostess twinkie, I think I heard they opened a time

capsule after 100 years and the twinkie which was inside was eaten

immediately. Just goes to show, they are made well, huh? *said

sarcastically*

the poor 9 yr old has had it rough all his life he almost died several times

when he was born, he aspirated into his lungs several times and something else.

i found out later that my cousin used to lock him in his room and let him scream

when he was a baby and his daddy has been in jail all of his life and just got

out. (at least his dad is being a father unlike my cousin that walks in and out

of his life all the time).

I haven't checked this board in several weeks, but I did tonight and

this thread caught my eye. I am not a medical professional, but I am

the " owner " of a BRCA1 mutation. This is a specific genetic mutation,

identified through DNA testing, that puts a woman at a VERY

significantly elevated risk for both breast and ovarian cancer. This

gene was discovered about 15 years ago, and another similar one, BRCA2,

was discovered a few years later. Everyone has these genes; the risk

occurs when they are mutated. It's not common, but if you see a

pattern of cancer in your family, it's worth learning more about.

These mutations can be inherited and transmitted by both males and

females. You can find a wealth of information here: facingourrisk.org

I have no evidence of cancer, but I am planning to have a prophylactic

bilateral mastectomy in 2 weeks. Already had my ovaries removed a few

months ago.

Peace to you,

I am so sorry that you are going through this. I don't know how to

respond to your comments about cancer treatment. I am having two

healthy breasts removed because of this mutation that I have. If I

don't do it now, I will almost certainly get breast cancer later and

be forced into it.

I'm 49 and have been married for 24 years. My husband and I don't

have any children together, but I have a lovely stepdaughter who is

grown and living on her own. At my age, having my ovaries removed

was not a difficult decision. I was already having menopausal

symptoms, so they were about finished, anyway.

I will say a prayer for you.

anggy - you're so young - i'm so sorry you're going through

this...and I'm sorry that the possibility of having a baby is being

taken away from you...perhaps you can ask you oncologist about

retrieving your eggs (if they're still viable)...

my name is marisa - i'm 46, a widow, and I have an 8 year old son.

but when I was 33, i was so desperate to be a mother - the mamma

voice was singing in me - and instead i had a miscarriage - so i

know what it feels like to have a baby, or the possibility snatched

away...

but we live in miraculous times - and we're fortunate that there are

treatments available to us - that weren't here in our mother's time,

or our grandmother's time...

and you're blessed to have such a new husbandm, who is so

supportive...this is a HUGE test for your new marriage - I'm happy

that he's by your side.

peace

marisa
