Hi Walter,

Welcome to the list. I've gotten tons of info from the people here. My son

just turned 16 and was diagnosed in Oct 2005. It was very, very stressful

at first and there are times when I'm still stressed (sending your kid off

on a band trip to Chicago is stressful enough....worrying that he won't eat

or take insulin at the right times just adds to it.)

Sounds like your son is handling it about the same as my son. My son was

upset at first but then just got involved in handling the day to day

routines and doesn't seem overly concerned about it. My son does do his own

insulin shots. I'm sure your son will too with time.

One thing we were really surprised by was that his vision started getting

worse during the first week after diagnosis. It turns out that this is

normal and will resolve itself once his blood sugars get a little more under

control. The eyes got use to the high blood sugar and then when you start

insulin, it brings the sugars down more quickly and eyes have to adjust to

that. We ended up getting him some reading glasses from the drug store and

then set up an eye dr appt for a couple of months later (so they could see

the eyes after they adjusted.)

How did you figure out your son was diabetic? Mine son was peeing

constantly. Turns out he had also lost 30 lbs over the past year. His bg

reading was 501 at the Dr when we went in to ask about the peeing.

Hello all,

I'm new to the list and just thought I'd introduce myself. On Monday, my

nine year old son was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. Needless to say, we're

still in a bit of shock around here, but we're coming to grips and trying to

get on top of things. Liam's been amazing about it. He's angry and

frustrated of course, but he's really trying to own his condition. He's

taking charge of counting his carbs and planning his meals and snacks. He's

also gotten good at testing his own blood. He's a little shy about giving

himself shots yet,

Hi Barbie,

Pretty similar to your story. For the last few weeks, he'd been feeling

kinda tired a lot of the time. He was also peeing and drinking a lot,

especially in the evenings. We took him to the doctor on Monday and his

reading was 538. We also knew he'd been looking thinner, and some others had

mentioned it too. Turns out he lost about 14 pounds - a lot for a 9 year

old!

Thanks for the tip about the vision. We'll definitely keep our eye on that.

practicing injections. It's a lot to take in and a whole new lifestyle, but

he's just kind of blowing me away with how ready he is to take charge of it.

He may be doing better than his poor parents. Needless to say, I've been

swimming in stress this week. We took him Monday and Tuesday up to the

Vanderbilt Children's Hospital in Nashville, which is a simply wonderful

place. Great doctors, nurses, and other employees. I hated being there, of

course, but I can't think of a place that would have taken better care of

us.

Anyway, I just wanted to say Hi. I've had psoriasis myself for a number of

years and run one of the Yahoo support groups for that, so I know what a

wonderful resource a group like this can be for learning, sharing, venting

frustrations. J

Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed with T2 November 2004. I knew it was coming and fought

if off for a few years before it won. My triglycerides were averaging

@ 600 for quite a while. My father has T2 and so did both of his

parents. My mom's brother also had it.

My last A1C was 6.1 which my doctor was pleased with. I am taking 500

mg. of metformin and 1 mg. of avandia twice a day.

I have a problem with feeling drained every afternoon after I eat

lunch. I feel fine in the mornings and am fairly active then but after

I eat lunch I feel like someone has knocked the wind out of my sails.

It doesn't matter what I eat or how much I eat. I don't want to resort

to using something like caffeine because I have high blood pressure

which I take medication for. On top of that, I will try to take a nap

but cannot fall asleep so I just feel like a useless log for a few

hours. It drives me crazy!

Hi Marie,

I am the very same way. If it doesn't get done by noon here, it doesn't

get done! It's just like you said, I feel like a useless log laying on

the couch all afternoon. I wish I knew something to do to try and help

myself. I just feel totally drained of all energy. - Pam

Hi Sue,

You may have neuropathy in your feet. You need to discuss this with your

doctor. There are some meds that will help with this. It could also be

something not related to diabetes.

I was doing that BEFORE I got diagnosed ..which is what finally made me go to

the doc ...thought for sure it was me being lazy and my weight but my husband

had had enuff and said GO TO DOC ...so I did and thats when I found out about

being T2 ...noone except my grandfather has it in the family but he and I . My

stepdad does also but no blood relation there . Now that I listen to my body I

find that I go to bed earlier ...read to fall asleep ...and I try not to over do

it . I also have found that when I do my mile on the tread mill I feel better

the next day and have more energy ...the more stable by number are ..the better

I feel . I would feel pretty good 8 till about noon and then by 5 ...Zapped

.....so I know exactly what your talking about !

is your feet aching or burning?

I had a mixture of neuropathy and plantar fascitis. Talk about pain.

I don't even want to remember it.

The best thing for me was the lidicaine patch. I would put it on my

arches at night so I could sleep.

Some people take cymbalta for neuropathy. It is an antidepressant but

has been approved for the use of neuropathy. I did not take it because

I was allergic to it. Some people use wintergreen alcohol as a soak

with about 12 to 13 aspirins in the soak. I have never used it. I

took neurontin and used the lidicaine patches across the bottom of my

arches. I use to cut them in half. You can only keep them on for

eight hours and then off eight hours, so I used them at night to sleep.

You can not use more than 3 patches at a time because of overdosing.

It was one of things that kept my sanity. I also went for anodyne

therapy. I believe this helped me too. I only seem to have pain if my

sugars are out of control.

I have good pedial pulses to but alot of damage to the nerves ...vessels are

fine ..just the nerves are damaged ...9 or so years ago before I knew I was type

2 they sent me to a podiatrist who was also somewhat baffled but determined I

had a spur??? ..he gave me pain meds ...but eventually it went away only to come

back on and off so I never went back thinking I was just a medical phenomenah

....I wasnt ...now I know it was nueropathy and the drugs they gave me for that

might help ...but they said keeping my sugars more stable would help more then

anything .

The sensory test was nothing more then me turning my head while she poked around

on my foot and then did some kind of tone test ..kind of like when they hit your

knee to test your reflexes cept this was on my heel ...she used some kind of

filament to do the pokin ..didnt hurt or anything ...the test was real simple

but I did have to ask for it even after complainin about the foot pain .

Walter,

Hello, and welcome to our group. I am Judy, and am glad to have you join

us. You will find support, a wealth of understanding, encouragement and lots of

information from the diabetes group. I have not been here long, but have

been helped and encouraged by this group.

I am sorry to hear of your son's on set of diabetes at this young age. I I

know this must be a daunting and frightening experience for your family.

Children are much more resilient in handling these kinds of things that we

are prepared to, or so it seems. Their lives for the most part (except for

unusual circumstances) are much less complicated, and they have a tremendous

amount of faith and acceptance. The fact the Liam is angry about it shows that

he is dealing with the realities already. As you know, this is a good sign.

He sounds like a very smart, gutsy young guy. I have a feeling that it won't

slow him down a bit though. :-)

Although I do not know any children with diabetes, I am the parent of two

daughters with special needs. , 25, has mild spinabifida, and ,

age 35, developmental disabilities, mental health issues and psoriasis. My

adult girls are both independent and doing well on their own now.. So, I do

know the difficulties that parents and family members so through dealing with

the emotions of our children's illnesses. Please feel free to write and vent

anytime you need to.

..I have Psoriatic Arthritis, and autoimmune liver disease which has been

very difficult to diagnose and accept, and now treat. .. The treatment for the

immune system's attack on my liver happened to be a large does of prednisone

which caused an onset of diabetic symptoms. That why I am in this group, as

well as another one. I try to get as much information and support as possible.

I

know you understand that, with you being involved with a Yahoo group

yourself. I am also in a PA group. .

I have heard good things about the hospital you are referring,. Vanderbilt.

I grew up in Bowling Green KY, close to the Tennessee border.

Again, welcome to you and your family, and my best to Liam !!

Walter you are right about Vanderbilt. Both of my father's parents

were treated at Vanderbilt and were given excellent care. They were

both T2s and had also suffered heart attacks. If it wasn't for the

excellent medical staff she would not have lived more than 81

years.

Hi karen,

My name's Marie & I'm also new to the group. I notice that you take

Lipitor. Does it make your muscles ache? Mine did and my doctor

switched mt to Zocor and the aching stopped.

That's good info to know about glucosamine. I had thought about

taking it because my knees sound crunchy when I walk up a flight of

stairs. I already give it to my 9 year old boxer (my vet's

recommendation) and it has done wonders for him.

Just reading what others have posted has already helped me out so

much. I wish I had found this group a long time ago.

Thank you very much Judy for your kind words. As a sufferer of psoriasis

myself, I can certainly sympathize with your daughter. So far, I've been

lucky enough to avoid psoriatic arthritis. Do check out the Yahoo groups

psoriasis_support and psoriasis-group if you haven't. The former is much

more active, but is unmoderated. The latter is my own group - less active,

but we moderate for spam. J

Hi there,

Well, I have learned that the Medicare Part D is not all it's cracked up to

be. The basic coverage only covered my medications for 4 months. Now I am in

the " donut hole " part of the plan where I have to spend more than $3000 before

I am eligible for " catastrophic " benefits. I'll never be able to reach that

limit, as I don't have that kind of money (but I still have too much for other

assistance). So, I'm back to begging for samples of my non generic

prescriptions. It is so stressful.

Have you been able to try the Breyer's Carb Smart fudgesicles yet? They are

pretty good. Ice cream is a major problem for me, so it's better to keep away

from anything that I can scoop into a bowl. I really enjoy the Triscuit Thins,

and have them and some cheese spread often for snacks.

it's a whole new ball game for me Y

Hi ,

yup, Breyers Fudgesicles are scruptious. Just can't eat one :-( I'm like

you - trying to pretend hot days of summer are not here and stay away from

the 'good' stuff . I do the triscuit thins too and they are providing the

'crunch' I used to get from potato chips etc.

Just tried " I can't believe it's not butter LITE " and it tastes good. 1T is

50 cal but I have to have something. Rather have butter but that's more

calories and I still have about 20 lbs to take off. now that is rewarding!

Still can't find a cereal I can have enough of without too many carbs -

sigh.....

I enjoy eating a cup of Kashi Go Lean cereal with skim

milk for

breakfast. Kashi is high fiber and all natural. 36

grams of carb

from 1/2 cup of skim milk and a cup of Kashi Go Lean.
