I'm looking at the info on the back of Hersheys sugar free chocolates Per serving Total carbs 22g Dietary fiber 10g Sugars 0g Sugar Alcohols 9g Does this leave 3g that count? Guest guest
Not according to how I was taught. I was told: Total carbs minus fiber minus 1/2 of the sugar alcohols. So this would be 7 or 8 depending on how you want to round. The sugar alcohols don't have a huge impact on your blood sugar, but they can. Also, I was told only to subtract the fiber if it was 5 grams or more. Mike > > Hi All, > For those of you who understand this stuff. Guest guest
Total carbs are 22 grams. This is basically 1.5 carb exchanges figuring 15 grams per carb. Forget the fiber and the sugar alcohols. Guest guest
Judith, someone else will probably jump in here with a better explanation, but I'll give you my kindergarten understanding -- exchanges are how many servings of food started getting measured (I think by Weight Watchers) to replace having to count calories - a diet plan would allow x# of exchanges (serving portion) of a given type of food so that people could make putting together a meal plan easier. there were several 'diet' cookbooks that use nothing but an exchange program and at least several years ago the dietician at my doctors office did the same thing - an example of this is: a slice of white bread, a tortilla, 1/2 c peas, or 1 c puffed cereal are all equivalents bread exchanges so that they could be substituted in meal plans & recipes. they are all supposed to be the same in calories, carbs, and proteins. then recipes would tell you how much of each type of exchange it was valued at example: spicy marinated pork chops would have the following exchanges: 3 lean meats 1 1/2 vegetable 1 1/2 fat but the drawback to using exchanges (at least when I learned the program) was the glycemic index wasn't taken into account this recipe for the pork chops has the following ingredients: 1 c vegetable juice cocktail 3 Tbsp onion 1 Tbsp green pepper 3 Tbsp lemon juice 2 Tbsp Italian salad dressing mix 2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 4 pork loins in the vegetable juice, lemon, onion & Worcestershire alone there is 6 g of carbs per serving not including the carb count for the salad dressing mix. the fun part starts when you try to figure out what you can eat to conform to your exchange allowance per meal / per day I have on old better homes & garden cookbook that is all exchanges, tried it for about 3 days & almost tossed it out in frustration, but some of the recipes are good. It might have been okay as long as I stuck to the menu plans from the book, but at the time I has a toddler and somewhat older child, both with food allergies.... was just too much work to figure out what to make that we all could eat....Should look through it and see if there are any that could be used now I hope this helps some until somebody with a better explanation jumps in all in all, it's easier to just count carbs, beth > Re: Figuring carbs > > > Will someone pleeeez tell me what carb exchanges are and how to do them? > > JUDITH > > >

Guest guest
Hi Judith, I'm in the middle of typing all this info. up for my friends. They want to know what diet I'm on that has caused me to lose so much weight. It will take me a while, it's like typing up a book. But, when I get it done, I will post it. I learnt it at Welch's Diabetic Center. - Pam On Fri, 30 Jun 2006 22:26:22 -0400 " HELPERDOGS " helperdogs2@...> writes: Will someone pleeeez tell me what carb exchanges are and how to do them? Guest guest
It's so much easier to think about how many grams of carbs you can have for any given meal and then simply choose the ones that would be best for you since it's the digestion of carbs that causes insulin spikes, therefore I would rather have a serving of broccoli or cauliflour or even peas that take longer to digest than a peice of bread that triggers another carb craving beth > Re: Figuring carbs > > > Beth, > > yup you helped :-) I'm not going to bother with exchanges!
