Those who have HS EMT students..... A new thing about CBT - it wll not allow

those under 18 to take the exam. This flies in the face of what has been going

on for years that allowed 17 year-olds test, and receive their certs when they

turn 18. Does anybody want a student in any other praogram to wait 3-6 months

after the course ends to take their exam? What are other programs doing in

response to this???

I'm curious how many programs/individuals this affects. The problem is when

they enter they DOB on the CBT application the computer recognizes they are

not 18 so the computer will not allow them to register. I plan to address

this with NR but I'm curious what you all think about this issue and how wide

spread this problem is for your programs. I know if this program existed when

I was a student it would have affected me because I didnt turn 18 until the

September after I graduated from high school in May.

Just curious what you all think.

Maxie-

I have a program at Katy ISD which involves several campuses. My students

all registered and paid approximately 2 weeks ago. The ones who are not yet

18 received a letter stating NR accepted their application and fees but their

test would not " be graded " until they reach the age of 18. The wording is

somewhat misleading since CBT is graded at the time. My interpretation is they

are not allowed to test. I attempted to contact NR last week but never

received a return call from certification. This greatly affects my program

especially this school year due to the fact that in August the students were

told

as all classes in the past, they would be allowed to test but would not

receive their grades prior to turning 18. I do not recall seeing anything from

NR

or being told during conversations with them regarding high school students

that this would occur. We already have 4 campus programs scheduled for next

school year with multiple classes on some campuses. My first high school class

was in 1999 and since then, many of my students have obtained positions as

EMT's both during and after college. I currently have some enrolling in

paramedic courses as well. High school EMT classes are a great way to

introduce

our profession and assist with obtaining the much needed EMS personnel in

Texas. Last year I had a 100% pass rate on NR testing from my high school

class.

These students take this very seriously and should not be penalized by

having to wait until they reach 18 to take their test. Any help would be much

appreciated.

Thanks--

Sam

Champion EMS teaches an EMT-Basic class at a local high school and some of the

students are not 18 at the time of graduation. All of them are 18 by December

of

the graduating year.

Maxie,

This affects the program at our local high school. We've always had the students

test, but those who weren't yet 18 had to wait for their results. This year, I

have 3 who won't be 18 by the proposed test date of May 11.

We've had previous issues on the test date versus graduation date when

transitioning to NR. After much ado, we remedied this by testing mid-May. Those

eligible to test will mark the NR application as high school graduates as I

receive confirmation from the counselors that, even if they stopped attending

school or failed remaining exams, they would still be graduates.

I've alerted administration at the school about this dilemma and will await your

response for a resolution.

I think this is another problem that NR has to fix due to students taking the

course while still in High School. Always before, they could apply and test but

the test results were held until the candidate turns 18. I think they need to

go back to that.

Also, they have been jacking around with our foreign students. They used to

assign a generic number for tracking purposes for an international student, not

an American citizen, since some other countries recognize American

certifications. We recently went round with them because they were refusing to

allow an international student to test - blaming it on Pearson Veu and the CBT

process that requires a Social Security number. Upon checking with Social

Security, they state unequivically that requiring someone to register using

their Social Security is AGAINST THE LAW as the number is designed for tax

purposes ONLY, not for identification purposes. Sooooooo.....

We also have the same problem with several of our HS Hispanic students who's

parents are not US citizens and can not get SSNs. They have State ID #s, which

DSHS accepts, but NR does not.

Just FYI in case NR gives you guys a runaround, I successfully got them to

supply a number for my U.K. student based on the Social Security Administration

ruling on the fact they NR is not allowed to require that. So play the hardball

if you need it - they can't refuse to supply a generated number for student

tracking for students who are not American citizens. Besides, they set a

precedent for doing this PRIOR to going to CBT. The precedent for the High

School students being able to test prior to 18 with grades being withheld until

they were 18 was ALSO set prior to CBT, so they are breaking their own

precedent.

I spoke with Dr. Greg Margolis (I believe he stated his title as Associate

Director) at NR today. Dr. Margolis has assured me that all students will be

eligible to test regardless of whether they are 18 or not. The difference

will be in the registration of the student online. When applying, students 18

and over should select ECA, EMT-B, etc. Students who are not yet 18 should

select Assessment Test. Dr. Margolis stated that all students would take the

same EMT-B CBT and receive their grades immediately. However, the ones under

18 would not be registered or certified until they turn 18, write the NR

and enclose a copy of their driver's license proving their age. Also, if

anyone has students under 18 who have already registered and paid, Dr. Margolis

stated to send him the student's name and social security number. He will have

them changed over to the Assessment Test.

First let me say I appreciate all of your comments it has given me an idea

of the problems you all are facing with the high school students and NR thats

why I asked for your comment when Mike brought it to my attention.

We are working with NR on the procedure and I hope to have them ironed out

this week. The problem is when someone sign up for the assessment exam I have

to verify they are eligible. I can do that for members taking the

assessment exam as an option for recertification or reciprocity.

Normally the coordinator will verify the course completions for initial

students but if they sign up for the assessment exam then I will get an email

to

verify there completion an I don't have a way of doing that. You all may

have to send me a roster of these student or these student may be required to

submit a written application with the ccc attached or they can reprogram the

computer. Nevertheless we are working on it with there computer folk to get a

process working.

Thanks again for your comments and I will let you know as soon as we get the

process in order.
