Guest guest
I am 40 years old with two children, ages 5 and 7. I had thyroid cancer almost two years ago (Thyroid removed 4/05, RAI 2/06). Since my RAI in February I had noticed some changes in my breasts. I had the sensation that the RAI uptake to my breasts had " ended " any lactation activity I had remaining (I had stopped nursing almost two years before, but nursed for 5 years straight before that). In August I thought I felt some lumps I wasn't sure about, so I visited my doctor. She did a breast exam and didn't think anything was unusual, just lumpy. But scheduled me for a thermography in November. The thermography showed heat spots in my left breast. This time upon examination we found a 3cm lump that seemed to show up out of nowhere (or at least very quickly). Last week I did a mammogram and ultrasound. They confirmed the mass (actually multi focal: 2.3 cm and 1.8 cm in diameter). They are solid and show clustered calcifications. There is not a BIRAD rating, but a statement saying " the findings are highly suspicious for breast malignancy " in the sonography paragraph. Final Impression on the report just says " Supsicious. Ultrasound core biopsy to be conducted " . My doctor has recommended we consult with a surgeon and have it taken out to preserve the capsule. Our consultation appt. is for end of this week, with plans for surgery the following. My husband and I are scared. Of course, it's easy to read and jump to the worst conclusions (stage III because of size and multifocal). Is there any possibility of this still being benign? Guest guest
It would be impossible for any of us to say if its benign. Lets hope its all calcifications and nothing else. I will keep you in my prayers. Guest guest
Dara - unfortunately there would be no way to guess on that. You are doing the right thing, following up with a surgeon and getting a biopsy. Don't jump to a Stage III assumption yet though - it's so easy for our minds to take this to places we may never need to go. Step by step - anything is possible. This is a very scary time and knowledge will give you the strength to know what to do, when the time comes. We all know that waiting is just the worst! Hugs and welcome to the group.
