Guest guest
OK - here is my story. I found out about my IDC on Halloween. Spoke to my family dr. (where the biospy results were sent). She recommended a surgeon. I called the surgeon and had my first appointment the first week of November. Surgeon recommended a lumpectomy since tumor was small (1.5 cm) - he is very busy, scheduled lumpectomy on 12/5/06 - which seemed like a long time to wait, but he said it really would'nt matter because the tumor has been growing for between 5 - 10 years, a month is not going to make a difference. Surgery removed a 4.5 cm tumor, 4 out of 14 nodes were possitive. Received call from surgeon - need a reincision. When in for my follow up for surgery. My surgeon pushed blame on the report he received that the information wasn't accurate, tumor was grossly underestimated and he concentrated on the superior, as indicated on the mamogram/ ultrasound, however, superior margins were clean however the inferior was positive. Dropped off my disability papers while I was there. They charge $10 to fill out paperwork (how pathetic). I requested my papers get mailed to my employer to get completed and filed. A week later, my employer called me to let me know they never received anything from the doctor's office. When I called the doctor's office, they claimed to have faxed them to disabilty, I said " I specifically requested they be sent to my employer " .. three days later, I received them back in the mail. I was so suprised that they mailed them to me, I called the disability office to see if they were really ever faxed - they had no record of me at all. So, at this point, I feel I was lied to and it seemed that they can't follow directions. Scheduled for 2nd surgury - again, very busy and is not available until Jan. 13. I went in for my pretesting, when the nurse went over all of the paperwork and had me sign pre-surgery stuff, she kept reading right breast. I said, no left - she said no the doctor's paperwork all says right. She called their dr. office and they made a mistake - gee... a MISTAKE???? If it were there breast would they have made a " mistake " ... doubt it. I really like my surgeon, but all of my family thinks I should find another surgeon - what do you guys think? Would you? Thanks Rose

Would you? > Thanks Rose > Heck yeah! I'd go hunting! That guy sounds like he is over-booked. He may be good, but if he doesn't even know which breast to work on, I see a real problem! And a good dr. would probably have at least looked at your mammograms to see the size of the tumor. Remember, you are putting your life in his hands. As for what is going on in his office, that seems a bit over-sloppy to me, too. Lucinda
Guest guest
Hi Rose, this sounds like one mistake too many. Maybe your surgeon is very competent, but has incompetent office staff. Also, the fact that he's waiting over a month to do followup surgery would be a red flag, IMO. You need a surgeon who's not too overworked to follow up with you in a timely manner. In my case, my surgeon waited a month between my lumpectomy and mastectomy, but said that was OK because the cancer in the margins was DCIS and my ICD had been totally removed. -
Guest guest
apparently he has idiots working for him.....how could they make a mistake with someone's LIFE...ugh.....The fact that you like him is a good thing BUT I would be VERY concerned with the staff....They could have operated on the wrong breast...That needs to be addressed with the surgeon if you really like him OR get another surgeon.. Guest guest
Rose, My DD was diagnosed in October, had surgery a week later, 1 node showed positive so she had another surgery to remove more lymph nodes one week later. There are many good surgeons out there that you might like just as well, that won't make you wait until they get " aroundtuit " ... If it was me I would be checking, I would also get copies of my medical record for the period before and up until the diagnosis. I wonder who gave the misinformation to the surgeon... Guest guest
Rose: Only you can be your best advocate for yourself. I don't care how likeable a surgeon is. If he or she is too busy to make sure that things are accurate, RAISE A RUCKUS! There are guidelines for this sort of thing. Change surgeons immediately. It doesn't sound like he or she knows the left hand from the right. What would happen in surgery? CHANGE SURGEONS. You desire better. Jan K Rose rosemunch@...> wrote: OK - here is my story. Guest guest
Rose: My husband read your e-mail. He couldn't believe that this doctor is sooooo incompetent. In my husband's words: Find a good oncologist immediately and tell him or her what you have been through. Then run, don't walk, to the nearest malpractice lawyer. " This surgeon definitely does not know much about tumors. My oncologist told me anything under a cm would be considered small. He would definitely have a different opinion about a tumor that is 1.5 cm let alone one that is 4.5 cm. I agree with my husband. This surgeon and his inept staff are not taking your life and needs very seriously. Talk to an oncologist first. He can give you a reliable recommendation for a new surgeon. God bless your efforts. I will be praying for you. Jan K Rose rosemunch@...> wrote: OK - here is my story. I found out about my IDC on Halloween. Spoke to my family dr. (where the biospy results were sent). Guest guest
I choose the surgeon, in the area, that who did the most mastectomies and who introduced the sentinel node biopsy to this area. However, like your surgeon he was very busy. I had immediate reconstruction and am glad I did as it was the plastic surgeon who recognized the severity of the flap nacrosis the day after the oncology surgeon deemed it superficial. In this case it was good to have checks and balances. Also, I had to speak to the oncology surgeon twice about having Her2 testing done. He neglected to order it and wouldn't you know the hospital, I had the surgery, does not do it routinely. I raised quite a fuss with the surgeon and the hospital and now the hospital is up to speed with every other hospital in the area. The patient rep actually had the nerve to tell me it was a good thing the Her2 debocle happened to me as I was savy enough to look into it. I mean what about all the BC patients who weren't. I have been pretty disgusted about the whole thing. Ruth > > OK - here is my story. > > I found out about my IDC on Halloween. Spoke to my family dr. (where > the biospy results were sent). Guest guest
Hi Rose. What a dreadful time you have had ~ this is so very unprofessional. Differentiate beween liking and trusting. You may well like me but do you want me to perform surgery on you? Liking is not sufficient grounds for trusting in my book. You could find someone else whom you like just as much or more, is entirely professional, on the ball, has staff who don't lie to you, and you end up being treated properly, your confidence levels are rasied and from the beginning you are able to trust them too. Patients should never pay for doctors' mistakes ~ it simply costs too much. Personally I would get out while I can and before another mistake is made. All the best in finding someone you can rely on ~ if you post your area on here there may be a patient who can personally recommend someone. Take good care Velvet (UK) Rose rosemunch@...> wrote: OK - here is my story. I found out about my IDC on Halloween. Spoke to my family dr. (where the biospy results were sent). Guest guest
Hi Rose, my name is Patti. My mother, aunt, 2 cousins and great aunt are the ones around me that have/had breast cancer. I agree with your family 100%. I would also get a copy of all reports (so you can research on your own - knowledge is power girl) and look for another surgeon. 1. Whether the cancer has been growing for 5 or 10 years or not, you have cancer and the sooner you get it out the better. You can bet that if it were his wife mother he would make time. My mother's doctor is on a trauma response team for the hospital, most of the time he is late for his appointments, but when he rcvd the biopsy results she was in surgery within 1 week. This is your life and you have a right to fight for it. Good luck and prayer are coming your way. Guest guest
Rose, I think I would find another dr. If they can't tell the truth, loose things, and most of all listed the wrong breast, I would definitely look for someone else. My surgeon is the bussiest in this area and never once did I have any problems. He managed to meet us after he was done with his patients at 5:30 on a Fri. to look over my mammo, did the biopsy in the ER right away, they got me in for an appointment on Mon. morning, and my mastectomy was that Thurs. I will keep you in my prayers. Guest guest
I have breast cancer and lymphoma. I am new to the group. I have found I must follow up on everything from paper work to carefully watching my insurance statements. You will find you can be billed several times along the way for the same amounts. I am retired by choice and living on my social security. My husband has alzheimers disease, I preferr to be his caregiver than let someone he does not know care for him. Yes, I know the time will come when I will need help. My income is to high to qualify for anything I have been told that I fall through the cracks. So help is not there for me. velvet girling osteonecrosisjaw@...> wrote: Hi Rose. Guest guest
Margaret, Guess I am a little confused. Your original post said you had lymphoma and this says lympedema. I am thinking maybe your first posts was a mispelling. I never had lymphedema. But I do know some of the ladies in the group have. You can get a special sleeve to wear and they is also massage techniques but you would need to go to someone that is trained in this. Guest guest
Rose, I'm in agreement with the majority here. It it were me, I would definitely find another surgeon. The fact that the paperwork even had the wrong breast listed really alarms me. Do you have a medical oncologist? If you do, maybe he/she can recommend another surgeon. Guest guest
Find another doctor!. I put an X on my breast to be operated on after hearing about horror stories about wrong limbs/ kidneys being removed. One doctor that I was contemplating using insisted that I have surgery done at a local small hospital with not such a great reputation in which he is chief of surgery there, instead of a larger more equipped hospital inwhich he has also operating privileges. That office also told me my mamo films canonly be bought in at certain times, even though he had office hours all day that day. I work all day-but no exceptions. I said forget that and found another doctor which I am very pleased with. Shop around, ask people for recommendations. Good luck Eileen > > OK - here is my story. > > I found out about my IDC on Halloween. Spoke to my family dr. (where > the biospy results were sent). Guest guest
When I had my mastectomy - the surgical nurse put " THIS ONE " in permanent sharpie ink on my left breast before surgery. I suggested, and she complied, that she put a big NO on the right breast. Can't be too careful. Jan K eileenmp2000 eileenmp2000@...> wrote: Find another doctor!.
