Guest guest
I have become an official wimp. Seattle has 90+ degree temperatures today. I grew up on the East coast and this would be common but have spent too many years in Seattle. How does everyone deal with exercise in this kind of heat? I do not have air conditioning and even at 8 AM it was 80 degrees in my house. I have not felt like moving from the fan to cook, eat or exercise today. This probably will not be the last day of this heat this summer so..... Help! Donna in Seatac
Guest guest
Hang in there. I'm in DE and it is raining like you wouldn't believe and humid to boot. On these days, just stay in one place and stay cool. Stress is not good for you. JUDITH > I have become an official wimp. Guest guest
ACK, no air-conditioning??!!!! I live in Louisiana, and it was 97 with double digit humidity. We have no houses without air conditioning, LOL. Think water aerobics!! Laurie
Guest guest
I live in south Florida, and now we have temp in the upper 80's..In July and August it is always hot and humid, but usually 93 is the warmest.. Most folks down here have access to pools or the beach..It's not good to exercise in the heat. Save it for cooler weather. Eat light. Your doc can advise you about exercise in hot weather. ~*Lainie~*The StarGazer*~ My Astronomy Website: http://community.webtv.net/LAINIE121/doc
Guest guest
Donna, I'm just a little ways south of you....this has been a horrid couple of days hasn't it. I don't know about today, but yesterday was a record-breaker and today was supposed to be hotter & tomorrow is supposed to be warmer yet. At least so far it hasn't been too humid. Right now my exercise is refilling my water glass as soon as it is empty & maybe grabbing some lunchmeat & cheese from the fridge while I'm there. but I'm real susceptible to heat, by July I will be popping salt tablets (don't tell my dr!) I don't have a/c either, but a fan in almost every window - now I'm kicking myself that I didn't pick up a couple a/c's when they went on clearance last fall! I think by next month I'll be getting a couple of airbeds, filling them with water & freezing them at least part way..... beth (in Auburn) > Exercise and heat > > > I have become an official wimp. Guest guest
Donna: We're baking out here in Monroe, too! ;o( It is fortunate that we do not often have these temperatures - and they generally don't last. I simply DON'T - don't cook, clean or exercise - and I eat salad, and hard boiled eggs. ;oD I generally get up early, so anything that has to be done gets done then or after the sun goes down and it's a bit cooler - LOTS of WATER really does help, too - and cool showers! Guest guest
Some of you mention low humidity, like in Seattle..I should be so lucky..In Florida it's mostly humid, except in the winter when we might have cool dry weather..San Diego has perfect weather all the time. ~*Lainie~*The StarGazer*~ My Astronomy Website: http://community.webtv.net/LAINIE121/doc
Guest guest
I feel your pain Donna. I'm in Sacramento, and this is our 8th day of triple digit temperatures. And humid too! I do have a/c, but try to use it as little as possible because it makes the electric bill skyrocket. I was solving the exercise need by getting out in my yard & working early in the morning, before it heats up too badly. Yard looking a lot better & my bg readings are good too. I suppose I could exercise to videos with the a/c on, but when it gets hot enough to turn it on, I'm already a limp dishrag from the heat. But that's my solution, to get the exercise in as early as possible, before it becomes unbearable & impossible. Kate > > I have become an official wimp. Seattle has 90+ degree temperatures > today. Guest guest
It was 96 DOWNTOWN today in San Diego. 98 on my patio 12 miles inland. And the sun didn't even come out until noon. Good heavens, what will it be in the rest of the summer if it's 98 in June, one of the cool summer months. So SD gets hit every once in awhile, too. Guest guest
It may be 98 degrees in San Diego, but at least you have low humidity..We never have more than 93 in south Florida, but combine the temp and humidity and the heat index can be 98! We won't be visiting southern Cal til November for a Bar Mitzvah. Guest guest
I have a water bed and I wouldn't trade it for anything, but as for hot flashes and night sweats, it just makes you cold while you are having them. My heater was broken and I didn't know it when I replaced the mattress (because the dog punctured it), but I have enough insulated stuff on it that I don't need it (to keep the dog from puncturing it again, saved some electricity) I sleep with a fan pointing at me, that helps. Then you can uncover when you are hot and cover up when you are cold. I am hoping the hot flashes will eventually stop. Guest guest
I been doing the uncover/cover up thing for years, but that's because I've always slept warm. When I was married it worked fine, I got the side by the window, folded 2 quilts over on ex and slept under just one thin blanket. Ex is gone (yippee!) but now I have a little yorkie (4.5 lbs) who shares my bed - he starts out with a fleece blanket of his own under a feather pillow, under my blanket, but about the time I'm having the night sweats he's managed to ooze against me & I wake up on the edge of a queen bed If he was a big dog I could understand, but he's the size of a guinea pig! On the other hand, my hot flashes have stopped (for now, but....) and I'm looking forward to November & December - house will be cold, but not cold enough to turn on the furnace in the evenings. beth p.s. Guest guest
Good GRIEF Elise! That's ridiculous for San Diego! We only hit 80 today, but the humidity was off the charts (at least that's what it felt like). Luckily I was up in the Sierras for most of the day, where it's higher & cooler. But we're predicted to hit 98 by Sunday. And it's only June! How will I ever live through this summer?! Kate > > It was 96 DOWNTOWN today in San Diego. 98 on my patio 12 miles inland. Guest guest
I bet my mother had hot flashes for 20 years, and she is not diabetic. I got diabetes from my dad's side. I don't know about diabetes causing them or not, but I know they go on for at least 10 years due to menopause. Guest guest
If I remember right my father would sweat up a storm at night & I don't remember my mother complaining about it until after he developed diabetes - he was always very warm too. I can't separate the menopause symptoms & the diabetes since they are both part of a larger medical issue and have dealt with symptoms of both since mid-teens..... > RE: Exercise and heat > > > Me too but after 5 years, I am skeptical. Guest guest
Beth, Isn't it amazing how much space those little dogs can take up?? While mine is not that small, he can stretch himself between my husband and I, and have us each on the edge of our king sized bed! But we love our little bed buddies, lucky us 2 of our 3 are bed sleepers. Laurie
