Guest guest
I have been on warfarin for 3 weeks now. My last blood test was on Tuesday this past week and my INR was 2.6. I'm on 4mg a day. I am finding little red dots on my arms both upper and lower. I got a misquito bite and scratched it and a lot of those red dots appeared. I don't know of anything I've done to my upper arms but the dots are there, some as small as pin points and some as large as pin heads. I also have a brownish red rash on the tops of my feet. I'm sure the dots have to do with warfarin. Should I be concerned? I also take Inderal, hyzaar, thyroid and dignoxin. Guest guest
MK, Your level is in the proper range but, the best thing you could do is to give your doc a call to check it out. Please let me know what your doc has to say or do. Thanks. heartofgold7777 mkseeker@...> wrote: I have been on warfarin for 3 weeks now. Guest guest
I'm wondering if your " red dots " might be peticheae. These are tiny little capillary bleeds which often occur when platelets are low. Or perhaps they are some sort of allergic reaction. I believe someone else on this list had a serious allergic reaction to warfarin. In any case, maybe it would be a good idea to let your doctor take a look-he/she can probably tell what's going on. Guest guest
Yes, this may be a reaction to the coumadin....call your provider and discuss it with him/her. brenta davis bdavis66@...> wrote: I'm wondering if your " red dots " might be peticheae. Guest guest
I forgot to include...the scratching probably ruptured the tiny capillaries that are superficial. This is just by the virtue of being on coumadin and abrading your skin. (these capillaries rupture easily and the bleeding is accentuated due to the coumadin) Are you also on Asprin? What dose? The brownish discoloration on the tops of your feet could be due to tiny leaks of blood into the skin as above...then the iron in the blood oxidizes leaving behind a discoloration which may be permanent. Guest guest
I have had petechiae. It is caused by blood being a little too thin. (I think mine is from vitamin C.) Here's a picture--http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/dengue/slideset/spanish/set1/images/pet\ echiae2-small.jpg The petechiae in the picture look like they are part of a foot injury. My petechiae are smaller, almost like pin pricks (without holes for the pin). They never cause me a problem, except they look a little odd. I have read the ideal INR is between 2.0 and 2.5. " Higher INR levels are associated with significant increases in hemorrhage and associated complications. INR values of 2.0 to 2.5 are sufficient for long-term anticoagulant therapy. " http://www.pubmedcentral.net/articlerender.fcgi?artid=384377 My husband had petechiae from warfarin, and I discussed it with my husband's doctor's nurse and that nurse said 2.0 to 2.5 is ideal but they don't require it of their patients because 2.0 to 3.0 is easier to meet. However, if it turns out to be petechiae and from the warfarin, I suggest discussing with your doctor cutting down by diet your INR to 2.0 to 2.5. For elderly, the INR might be less, for valve replacements, or whatever, the INR might be more, etc. So it is a should discuss with your doctor thing. Guest guest
All the dots look like where I scratched the insect bite area. Some are just farther apart. Before going on warfarin I was taking a baby asprin in the morning and one at night. I was also taking Plavix, 75 mg. I am now taking just a baby asprin at night. My digoxin was just upped last Thurs. when I saw my Dr. to .25 a day. I was in afib at the time and converted a few hours later and have been in NSR ever since, and have been feeling really great. My Dr. is out of town on a Drs without borders trip to central Americia. He goes a few times a year. I have had terrible luck with on Drs in the past and don't call them unless I have a dyer emergency. They usually always say go to the ER anyway. My skin has alsways been delicate and this (rash) has appeared before when I scratched too much. I had this (rash) on my feet before when I was taking Cardizem (which I had a strong adverse reaction to. It made things worse rather than better), but it went away after I stopped taking it. I guess it's just something I'm going to have to live with. I hate it because it makes my feet look dirty and here in SW Louisiana it's too hot to wear anything but sandles for a good part of the year. Thank you for your response. Also thanks to Brenta and as well. MK in Louisiana > I forgot to include...the scratching probably ruptured the tiny capillaries that are superficial. Guest guest
I have come to the conclusion that petechiae is exactly what I have. My INR as of last Tuesday was 2.6 and I have changed my dose of warfarin. I have an appointment on June 1 and since my Dr. is out of town I think I will just a little more " green " food until I see him. If if starts getting worse I'll call the office. I have a feeling it may be the combination of the warfarin and the Plavix that might be left in my system so hopefully it will dissappear soon. Thanks for the infro and the first hand experience infro. MK in Louisiana > I have had petechiae. It is caused by blood being a little too thin. Guest guest
MK, I think you are very wise to check with your doctor's office, especially if things get worse. If it is your platelets, eating more " green " food " may not help much since warfarin doesn't affect platelets. I hope things get better for you. Good luck!
