You sound so cute!!!

I gotta come up with a plan.

Sue you are good at plans...

This noise is coming from their two puppies need to

be taken out 20 times a day each. THE door double

exterior doors/aluminum storm door included thwacks

and cracks...and thunders below my bed...both

ways...in and out... Times that by two (150-300 trips

through the door.)....YOU GOT YOURSELF a real noise

nusiance.

Did I tell you the banging door is two feet from my

head when I'm lying down? THE WHOLE ROOM SHAKES....

This goes on until after midnight...

Lease says you can have pets as long as they don't

annoy any other resident in any way.

Does this count?

E you sound soooo much cuter than I ever shall feel LOL but I do admit I am a bit nutty :)

That doggie/door thing sounds like a real bother — I would say something to your downstairs neighbors first if you feel comfortable doing that.

If not — mention it to the Super but it’s usually best to go to the source.

I do think that creating your own “counter-noise” is a good one — music, TV, something you don’t mind hearing...

I think you are cuter...you work out!

I did complain to my landlady..and feel like I was

blown off. I guess I'm still in a little shock over

that. I really thought she was nice and that was part

of why I moved here.

Apparenlty I don't read people like I once did.

Anyway..there is a clause in the lease regarding pets

and its says that if your pet is a nuisance in any

way..to the other residents, that if it not resolved,

it might be asked to leave.

I should think that the Landlady would have tried to

assure me that I had some power in the situation, so I

don't have to wiegh moving out and what not myself.

You see...the doggies..need to pee a lot when they are

young.... AND this couple next door has TWO of these

doggies... SO its TWICE as bad as it would be. I just

can't stop thinking that they should have really put a

cluase in the lease regarding age of the dog and the

routine to take it outside for potty training. This

is not a normal going in an out the door routine.

Most residents ever go out once..and come back once a

day. THESE folks are just endlessly going in an

out...and its sooo obnoxious.

I don't know them...I'm so new here. TWO..of

them...only one of me.

Also..the guy under me just moved...and now its just

me here with these noisy puppy people, until someone

else moves in and gets to hear the joys of constant

door slamming.

Well,

If I was gonna talk to the chic...I would have to do

it during the day, since that is when she home alone

with the one dog.

What does one say in a situation like this...

HEY..you are a crummy neighbor and you are making me

miserable???

Right now..for instance...the guy just got in around 7

pm or so..and he's already been smashing the door

around a bunch of times and throwing the ball for the

dogs...inside their unit..which is next to mine.

THE rumbling/thunder is just unbeleivable...

There is a clause that says if the dogs become a

nuisance..in any way to any other tenant, they can be

asked to send the dogs elsewhere.

I don't know if they just are toooo stupid to imagine

that if they can hear others milling about... I can

hear all the commotion comeing from them...and they

are putting themselves in danger of having to give up

thier puppies.

This is the loudest part of the day...every day. IT

will go on till after 1 in the morning. If I want to

rest in my bedroom in anyway...I'll have to wait until

then.

IT really sucks.....

I am sooo depressed over this noise. I don't feel

right approaching a stranger..and telling her that I

don't like her noise.

EVERYONE I spoken to tells me..that is me that has the

problem and that to ask someone to not potty train

thier dog...or to stop enjoying their apartement is

obnoxious of me. I keep being told..that any approach

to the girl, would prove I'm some kind of wierd

control freak.

I keep hearing..apartments are noisey and that I just

have to live with it.

If this girl..has this same attitude..(as these people

who are supposedly on my side) then I will just be

creating an enemy.

I'm soooo very heartbroken that this place has turned

out this way..and that I don't have any power to stop

this kind of thing.

I don't know what a person is supposed to do....MAKE

tons of noise back at all hours of the day and

night...JUST so I can offload my frustration?

I read a website yesterday that said only about 20

percent of apartment dwellers will strive to curtail

their noisemaking after hearing a neighbor is unhappy.

ONLY 20 percent.

THEN..why would I waste my time...I run so much risk

in getting the couple all mad AT ME.

I'm sooo upset at this point, it was near impossible

for me to even speak to the landlord who seemed less

than interested in the problem.

I've been told by the (friends) that I have no

rights...and people are allowed to make as much noise

as they want in an apartment. If I don't like

it..then I must leave and inccur all kinds of charges

for breaking the lease.

WHY...does this have to be sooo hard?

E, sometimes tenants just don't know how the noise resonates. We had an apartment once where the master bedrooms were back to back and the couple next door decided to put their surround sound home theater in the master bedroom. All we could hear was the bass pounding from the subwoofer and it was like living in a thunderstorm all day and into the night until they went to bed. They had no clue and moved it as soon as they were told.

I'm thinking that you're right about not changing their training habits for the pet, but they may not realize that they're letting the door slam each time. If I were to approach them, I would have that attitude and say something like that, that I know they need to go in and out with their dog, but could they please hold the door while it closes because it echoes so badly above where you are. The old 'you catch more flies with honey' adage.

We had another apartment where the fellow upstairs was playing music way too loudly, and when I sent my husband up, I said that same thing. I told him to be really nice and act as if he assumed that the guy didn't know and could he please turn it down some. He said that he didn't even really need it on and turned it off completely.

So there's 2 for 2 for us, putting us at 100% success rate. When I said make your own noise, I meant with a quiet fan or something to drown theirs out, not by creating the same kind of noise back. I don't think that would solve anything except probably have you with someone else at your door LOL.

You might want to bake a batch of something and go down with it in your hands and then calmly tell her what the situation is and ask her to please open and close the door softly. That way you're not really complaining and she won't be as likely to get defensive. I would also start out with the idea that she doesn't know and is not doing it on purpose.

Just my thoughts... JudyP

Hi E.

I would do it like this:

I would go down and tell her (or him) whichever seems most sympathetic and unstupid, that you have some medical problems.

You are also having trouble sleeping and the door slamming is keeping you up at night, making it difficult to rest.

If you let them know that you are sure they don’t know and you realize it’s a “little thing” and may seem petty but the noise travels and is louder than may appear.

Unless they are heartless stupid and cruel, I think they will understand and acquiesce....

I guess i can figure out why he moved, huh? LOLSo, make sure your complaints are in writing to your landlady, that way you keep a copy also. Let her at least think you are keeping track and will seek legal action if needed. She make take you more seriously.  Even if you don't plan on moving, outline the lease to her where it talk about pest and tell her that she has a timeframe in which to fix the situation, or you will be forced to move and get a full refund of your rent and possibly be able to sue her for your inconvenience.  Do a google search of the rental right sin your area. We had to threaten our management company when they didn't fix the heat. They told us, we have 30 days, which is not the truth, they have 24 hours for heat.  I knew that because we did a search for our rights.  Guess when they fixed it? The next day.  Good luck, jackieAlso..the guy under me just moved...and now its justme here with these noisy puppy people, until someoneelse moves in and gets to hear the joys of constantdoor slamming.~E:)

Say, or write a letter that says...Dear neighbor, My name is E, I live next door.  I noticed you have two adorable puppies and healthy active kids.  I commend you on being responsible pet owners and making sure your little guys get plenty of exercise and potty time. You've probably noticed that the doors in our complex can be a bit noisy, I hope I have not made any noise that may be offensive for your family.  I'm dealing with a health issue right now, so even small noises disrupt my healing.  I haven't been bothered by any noises your family has made, but the door does make a slamming noise.Maybe we can figure out some way to to make them quieter together?  As neighbors I'd like to keep an open line of communication (insert phone number here if you are comfortable and then ask for theirs?)I am new to the area and would like to get to know your family better as time permits.I know this sounds a little cheesy, but better to offer honey to bees... at first.jackieWell,If I was gonna talk to the chic...I would have to doit during the day, since that is when she home alonewith the one dog. What does one say in a situation like this... HEY..you are a crummy neighbor and you are making memiserable???Right now..for instance...the guy just got in around 7pm or so..and he's already been smashing the dooraround a bunch of times and throwing the ball for thedogs...inside their unit..which is next to mine.THE rumbling/thunder is just unbeleivable...There is a clause that says if the dogs become anuisance..in any way to any other tenant, they can beasked to send the dogs elsewhere.I don't know if they just are toooo stupid to imaginethat if they can hear others milling about... I canhear all the commotion comeing from them...and theyare putting themselves in danger of having to give upthier puppies. This is the loudest part of the day...every day. ITwill go on till after 1 in the morning. If I want torest in my bedroom in anyway...I'll have to wait untilthen.IT really sucks..... ~E:)

JACKIE:

I think I just moved out before I was ready to handle

the vagaries of apartment living.

I was sooo excited to have something to think about

besides my health. WEll..I have it...now don't I?

You are very insightful... I'm thinking about

something just like that...

I also am thinking that....I'd really like to get a

more immediate reaction from them..so as sweet as the

letter is...I'm thinking I might have to have my

friend talk to them for me with the same spirit of

your letter.

Ya know...or try and talk to just the girl myself.

Grrr.

She could tell me to go take a flying leap.

Ya know what is soo odd about the door..is that they

have BACK door..to go in and out of...but they choose

to go out the one under my bedroom window. Just

changing that up would help a little..and it JUST

seems odd that they haven't considered how much noise

they are making.

ALSO..this door is on the SIDE of thier unit...not

smack dab in the middle...but the side.... that is

inbetween my window and thiers...so....its

REALLY...just as much in my space as thiers. You see

what I mean.?? Its a historic looking brown stone

type place..and the majority of thier place goes

around the corner...while the doors are on the far

end...NEXT to me. I think because of the postion of

the door...I probably get the BRUNT of the loudest

noise coming from that door...not them.

ITS gone into a major cold snap here...and its not

like I'm gonna be just standing around waiting for

them to come out..

I think I need to KNOW that someone is listening to my

postion..BECAUSE..right now...I have been angry about

his for about six weeks...and THAT seems like a long

time.

You do have something there though... I do like it.

As idle as a painted ship

Jackie:

I hear ya... Good job on getting a resolution.

I think when you are sick and alone, you don't want to

start a war with the landlady..and you don't want to

start a war with your neighbors.

THESE little things like this have a way of escalating

REALLY fast and getting over heated and emotional.

I already FEEL really stupid for moving here.

I've tried to be casual about so far..and thought that

this would be all I needed to do. NOW...that this

didn't work..I'm wondering if I should just pull

out...THE place is not WORTH the fight. I don't want

to fight with anyone...

I told the landlady..that I didn't want to blame

anyone..and told her that I know people make

noise...just wanted to sound reasonable, even though I

had gone by her office twice in one day a week

ago..left a message...and then showed up again a few

days later to follow up with the call....since she

never attempted to contact me in response to my

message telling here I had been by twice to talk to

her about some noise that was really getting out of

hand.

HER whole sluggish..response to me..and snarky retort

when I told her jokingly that " maybe the guy with tv

on all night should wear headphones after midnight "

she comes back...at me with a sneering... Well I

don't think that's reasonable!

I just wanted to be easy going..and light about it.

Don't want make waves... I' m not ready to get into

Dirty HARRY mode or anything yet.

I wish I had that back...but its not here yet.

I just want the door to stop...and the rumbling to

stop. IT really should be that simple. THIS has

already BEEN WAY WAY..to big of an issue in my life.

I either need to get a desk and a couch..or I need to

get out.

E, can you remind me where you are? For some reason I think you're on the other side of the ocean.

My building has a strict noise policy after 11pm at night, so if I couldn't sleep because of someone's noise, I would definitely complain, first verbally to them, then verbally to on-site management, and then in writing, and then in writing to the actual property management company. A paper trail may be necessary at some point.

I take care of myself and I go to bed on time. A good night's sleep is one of the few things that I ask for. Having said that, my hubby snores, so I wear one earplug in the ear that's not on the pillow. I suppose that drowns out other things too, but it would never drown out a slamming door. If I think about that, it's worse than the constant sound of TV or music. You would just be ready to doze off and the slam would startle you awake. I could not stand that.

Please keep us up to date with this saga... Judy

Absolutely,I am part of that 20% and would eagerly try to change my habits if it infringed.I share a driveway with an elderly neighbor, they asked that WE don't park in the driveway, which would be very convenient for me.BUT they park in it all the time. I was a little put off until I saw that they can NOT drive well! LOL  They cannot maneuver around my car, where as I have no problem gettingaround theirs. It's a small price to be a good neighbor. And karma may be playing out, as they own a house and would like us to rent from them and would leave it vacant until June to have us as tenants!JackieE---20 percent means you have a fighting chance. :)sue

Judy:

Thanks again for your response.

I live in West Hartford, CT....and in a historical

looking building, on the edge of an upscale village

full of BMW-driving-snobs.

The folks that live next door, live in a

townhouse..while I just live in one bedroom apartment.

The folks next door are young..and probably college

students or something......

My guess is that they have never considered that the

noise carries the way it does around here.

I'm pretty quiet and the couple downstairs..is pretty

quiet too..so they aren't hearing what's happening

over here...and besides which THEY ARE making such a

racket...THEY couldn't here anyone else if they

wanted.

I plan on putting something in writing for the

manager...since it has gone on now for awhile and I

just want to stop beating around the bush with this.

The doors need to be attended to by maintenance..and

I think if we can get everyone on the same page, this

problem will be solved.

I need to see the manager about resigning my lease

with the pet deposit anyway..so I should think that

this will be a good time to revisit the topic.,

without me having to go to anymore big overtures.

I bought some furniture from Ikea, but its all in the

car...and I'm too small to bring it up the stairs.

Any body have a man they could send?
