Guest guest
I picked up a box of sugar free Klondike " SLIM-A-BEAR and with it you get a coupon right on the box for 2 free weeks to try out; " CURVES " , it is good til Dec, 2006. SO I am going to give it a shot, the catch is they will give you 2 weeks free or a large deduction off a year's membership?? I'll take the free weeks to see if it is what I want first. Guest guest
Joyce, do you know what sweetner the Klondike slim a bear uses? And most especially, what happens at curves? I hear a lot about it but I don't know what exactly they do so I don't know if I can participate since I am still in my wheel chair a good part of the day.... I do have a 'scholarship' to the local Y for swimming and the gym, but curves might be nicer if I can do it??? Guest guest
I have a membership to Curves, but I dont go as often as I should. I really like it - its for women only, and there women there from 80 down to 10, all shapes and sizes. There is a circuit of machines that you do twice, at your own pace, and stations in between where you do running on the spot. Its an easy workout, or you can push yourself as hard as you want. You can also get dietary information, not specifically for diabetics though. Re: RE: CURVES ---free I called Curves to find out and it is like a nice lady's gym sort of place. Guest guest
Hi Judith, Curves is great! From their web site: " Dedicated to women's fitness, Curves offers a proven 30-minute workout that combines strength training and sustained cardiovascular activity through safe and effective hydraulic resistance. Curves also offers a commonsense weight management program that ends the need for perpetual dieting. " They have a series of resistance machines set up in a large circle, and you move from machine to machine for very short sessions on each machine. If my memory serves me, you go around the circle 2X (maybe 3X?). Because you don't work very long on any one machine, you don't ever get sore muscles. It's also nice because it's all women, and they don't show up in cute little thong outfits. I would visit the Curves location that you plan to go to, to discuss whether or not you can use the machines if you're in a wheelchair, & whether any accommodation can be made to help you. Kate > And most > especially, what happens at curves? Guest guest
Kate, thanks for the info. next I'll look to see the closest and how much it costs. I was hauling myself out of the wheel chair and actually cleaning 2 stalls (horses bedded in straw!) for the past 3 or 4 wks which helped me loose weight and gain strength but killed me on pain issues so I've just stopped. Now I have to find something else to get my metabolism up again because I've hit another plateau on the loose weight scene! :-( JUDITH > Curves is great! Guest guest
Klondike sugar free uses aspartame or nutrasweet for sweetener. re: Curves. From hearing a lot of good about it, I went in, already sold. I signed a contract waiving their offer of a " free week " . I was a bit surprised at how tight the contract was - even if you are ill, you can get the month's fee waiived but only by calling in each month that you are ill and providing a doctor's note also. Otherwise, you are charged for that month whether you use the facility or not. The contract I signed which obtained the best price was for three years. If you do waiive a month or two from your contract, those waiived months are added to the end, so that all contracts are three years of payment. You can get out of the contract by paying off, I think half of it or something like that. It was a bit tighter than I am comfortable with. After I signed, I went on to the workout. For me, it was one of the more UNFUN workouts I've ever done. Boring. Hard to rush from machine to machine, get in, get adjusted and do any more than a few reps on each machine. Most of the machines were lower body oriented - well who needs that - one can exercise the same muscles on a cyclometer in the comfort of home. NONE of the machines were adjustable for height, length of legs etc and so, injury or improperly working the muscles is a rather strong possibility. And the machines are set so that the slower you do them, the easier they are - the faster you do them, the more resistance - but using more resistance should not require faster. Inbetween each machine, you march on the little pads. So about half the workout is marching on those little pads... marching in place could be done in the comfort of home - why does one need CURVES for that? There is one thing I'll say for the workout... it's definitely aerobic - gets the heartrate up (even mine) but then, in 30 minutes one does not get that much aerobic benefit. The other positive for me, was a nice cool down stretch (I showed THEM a few they were not familiar with but basically they do teach people good stretching techniques). I think for some folks, CURVES would work well - i.e. for people who hate exercise and do nothing at all, CURVES might help tone them and certainly would give them some cardio. But for anyone more serious about exercise, CURVES was not the look at all. Disappointed, I asked for out of my contract and thus had the shortest CURVES membership in history probably. We parted friends. I told them it just wasn't for me and that I had somehow gotten an erroneous idea of what the workout and layout really was. They invited me to come in and see them when I'm in the neighborhood. Seems the main cardio of the workout is the marching in place. One is not on the machines long enough to injure one's self in most cases... it's a rush to get in more than 5 or 6 reps. And the stretch is good. There are tapes for cardio to be done seated... has one and then there is " chair-aerobics " . Finally www.bliss.com has tapes for larger people - some of the models are SSBBW's. (on the tapes). Guest guest
I belonged to Curves for a year, before I was diagnosed with T2. It was fun at first but not very taxing after a few months unless you were willing to do high impact stuff, I was worried about my joints. Also, two of the machines hurt my knees, so you need to be very careful, it is possible to get injured. My knees recovered after I stopped using those machines, I was lucky. I was shy and never felt very comfortable, if you want to do this and stick with it, I strongly recommend that you do it with a friend or make a great effort to make friends with other people who go there when you do. I didn't do this and I didn't last. I did lose weight while I was going there (although I got it all back after I stopped), and it is definitely good enough exercise to meet the " 30 minutes of moderate exercise " standard. They usually have deals at this time of year. Jan Jan Hodges http://www.greentwo.com Re: CURVES ---free > Hi Judith, > Curves is great! Guest guest
Judith, have you tried the " sit & be fit " program on tv? it's usually on a PBS station, but you can check her web site for more information. It isn't an aerobics type thing but flexibility, mobility, and balance is what is emphasised. beth > Re: Re: CURVES ---free > > > Thanks, Sue, > > that's what I was worried about. Guest guest
I really like the walk away the pounds videos. I am pretty erratic about it, but I keep coming back to them. I have two sets of them, and in the end, when you can't get outdoors to do exercise, for me they are the thing I can stand to keep doing. I hate having to exercise. Guest guest
Marisa, I actually called when another disabled person I met told me they gave disabled people either discounts or full scholarships, but there was a time frame to meet. I spoke to the person in charge of membership, I think, and explained my situation which was unusual. We did everything on the phone and then she mailed me an acceptance letter. I made out a form maybe, but I don't remember. Couldn't answer all the questions asked (dh problems). Then I went in and got my ID and stuff. Used the pool several times, and got dxed with diabetes and got obsessed with it so didn't go to the Y. Expect to start again next week. Aiming for 3x/wk or (sigh) 2x/wk to be in the water.
